When we started with the KZbin versions of Time's Scar: my very favorite is that first one to get pulled up. I think it's unfortunate he didn't first familiarize with the original version of that track, because what this group does with their small ensemble is just thrilling. And the blonde clarinetist who doesn't have a part and just gets to chill in the middle of it all? That's the best seat in the house right there. Incidentally, that one's also the video with my favorite "KZbin comment". Something to the effect of: "I danced down the aisle at my wedding to this song. It was the best decision I made that day."

The Chrono Cross OST is awesome. The electric bass with that fat and clear tone and a celtic-y melody on a flute or fiddle do most of the heavy lifting. It has a folk vibe to it but has splashes of unorthodox instrumentation that work really well.

Though Nobuo Uematsu is probably the most important videogame composer for me, as I've played lots of Final Fantasy in my life, and quite a lot of elements of my musical taste are kinda rooted in Final Fantasy music (symphonic music, progressive rock etc), but Yasunori Mitsuda is by far my favourite. Still to this day I get overwhelmed by emotions whenever I hear his music from Xenogears, Chrono Trigger & Cross etc... He's on the same level for me as all my favourite rock & metal bands, like King Crimson, Yes, Van der Graaf Generator, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Blind Guardian, Lacrimosa... Even though I don't play anymore, I still listen to music from the games. It makes me feel good.

Based on the rock and metal bands you listen to, you should check out the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 soundtrack if you haven't already. It's the hardest I've heard anyone rock out with a flute since Aqualung (the album).

@@notmyname213 thanks! Xenogears is my favourite game of all times (tied with Planescape: Torment), but I've largely skipped all the other Xeno games. Mitsuda and Uematsu were an eye-opener for me at like age 12, realizing there could be awesome musical experiences in video games. As others are saying, check out Chrono Trigger and Xenogears as well if you like this one. A cool thing about this soundtrack is that the game involves parallel worlds, and you see that reflected in several tunes that have a different arrangement in when you visit the same areas in the other world. Like the track at 25:10 , which is a village theme, goes between this sick 12-string guitar lead ("Arni Village") and a soothing piano lead in the other world ("Another Arni").

Yes, he (Mitsuda) likes tô make/perform clearer sounds. I would say he doesn't like tô experiment with notes, unlike Uematsu.. Obs: Just tô clarify that Uematsu, obviously, also knows how to write clear music either.. But he experiments more than Mitsuda, thus both bearing different styles of creating music.. When they worked together though, one of the best videogame OSTs ever was created.. Which actually paved the one from this video, by the way.. And now, here we are..

I second the comment suggesting Liberi Fatali. FF8 was my first FF, and my first ps1 game; so Liberi Fatali was the first piece of video game music that blew me away, and clued me in to the fact that there were games out there with amazing soundtracks. I actually played Chrono Cross not long after 8, and always loved the vibe in CC. Loved seeing a reaction to it! You just can't beat the original version of 'Time's Scar'

One thing to keep in mind also is for a lot of us that grew up with these games and the original music, we get that uncanny valley feel with most live performances or even covers. It's like listening to Aerosmith's version of Come Together before The Beatles version! You should always listen to the original version when checking a track and then decide if it's worth looking for a cover or orchestral performance, because it sets the bar correctly.

Yasunori Mitsuda is an absolutely amazing composer, every time I see his name in a work I know it's going to be incredible. While Chrono Cross is a very good first pick, his work in Chrono Trigger is even better, as I feel he really was able to pour his soul into that. Another of his works that I would recommend listening to is his KiЯitɘ (Kirite) Album, which was a CD made not for a game or series, but a story book.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and also glad you went back to the game's version of Scars of Time. I personally like it more. Some context for the OST: It was based primarily on the Europe/Africa region, with elements from, as you pointed out, the Renaissance to more present day. The game is also centered on an archipelago, hence the thematic elements of sailing and choice of instruments. The game also centers around dual timelines, with each line having its own style of music (home and another world) and variations of the same pieces. One of my personal favorites would be the Dreams of the Shore Near Another World, which plays as the overworld theme in the alternate timeline. I was honestly surprised it wasn't featured in the compilation (The Dream that Time Dreams contains some elements of it, and that section was in part of the compilation).

Time and fate are both major themes in Chrono Trigger (SNES 1995) as well as Chrono Cross (PS1 1999). Thanks to this medley you’ve now technically heard music from both as there are several pieces that made the jump to the sequel. Chrono Trigger was especially groundbreaking in terms of its approach to story and theme and really raised the bar on the whole genre. Cross I think largely suffers from the expectations of its predecessor. How do you succeed a successful experiment when half of your audience is expecting more of the same instead of another experiment? It’s an unwinnable situation really. These were the first video game OSTs I ever got and I think quite a few of us elder millennials can make that claim. Just excellent stuff. After you’ve had a chance to hear Chrono Trigger be sure to check out Brink of Time, the acid jazz reinterpretations. There are also a number of metal tributes if you ever want to do a crossover episode for your channels:)

Well lookie here. My name is based on this series, in particular this game. Glad you’ve listened to it. Still some of the best (game) music ever made. I even made my own composition inspired by it yeeaars ago, still on my channel

Orchestral tracks for the Suikoden series would be a high recommendation from me after watching this one. A good example would be the Japoin Games' Suikoden II Suite video, which is a performance by JAGMO.

2:26 These composers on the screen are legends, I would put Akira Yamaoka and Hitoshi Sakimoto on that list as well, you literally years worth of great composition, and some of them were not only composing the songs but also programming them to fit the limited game storage and to be sintethized in real time by the videogame soundboard, you know, the midi way. Some composers work around the point of loop by making the loop, and the entire song by extent, be dynamic, so it will loop parts of the song and evolve along with the gameplay, so if they can work build ups and resolutions along with the actions of the player or at least with the scene. It can go from changing the phase of the music along with the phases of a fight to sinchronizing the movements of the enemy to the beat of the song or adpting the song to the movements of the player. Dark Souls is one example that many people will mention but there's things like Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005), Paul Linford made some really good chase music that would adapt to what was happening on the chase so the player really felt like the game was a real time action movie. It is the kind of soundtrack that is best experienced in game, in my opinion.

I know I keep commenting sorry! I wish I had caught this live, I apparently have a lot to say! Geebz, have you perchance come across the Undertale 5th Anniversary orchestra? Not only is the arrangement SUPERB, whoever was balancing the sound on that recording blew me away with how clean and balanced it was. Can't recommend it enough, seeing Toby Fox's more 8-bit inspired pieces brought to such professional levels of orchestration is a treat! Would be happy to provide the video for you, if you need it but it's pretty famous if you search for the 5th anniversary edition

One thing that would make these videos perhaps unreasonable longer, but I think interesting is to first listen to the version as it was in the game and only then an orchestrated version. 😄

In the game certain things are played on acoustic guitar, which makes it feel much different. Much more intimate. (I don't know much about these things, maybe it's not a guitar, but something similar. Don't think it's an ukulele.)

When I was in high school in the early 00's, Chrono Cross was one of my favorite games. I replayed it last year and it wasn't quite as good as I remember but still would rate an A among all JRPGs. I hadn't heard the orchestral version before but I actually like the in game version more I think

If you want to go a bit deeper on the particuliarities of composing for games, it might be interesting to check out the OST for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Amon Tobin composed the soundtrack, but the unique part is that it's (one of?) the first game(s) where the music had modular layers, so it could dynamically adjust to what was going on in the game. E.g. when you went from sneaking around to being found out and now suddenly having to fight, the soundtrack would pick up in intensity right there and then. On top of that it's also just very good and cool music :D
