Chrono Cross Update Comparison Improves Frame Rate Before and After PS4 PS5 Switch Xbox Steam

Chrono Cross got a surprise update that smoothed out the frame rate for all systems. Combat now runs at 60 fps and outside of combat 30 fps. Changes were also made to how the character Pip grew. It's really nice how smooth is now. Sadly this should've been how they released it, but at least they fixed it even if it is a year later

All versions of this “remaster” are running on emulation and yes the game now runs at 60fps instead of 30 on all platforms except for the final battle on Switch, I assume it was too intensive so they left it at 30 to keep it stable. It should have shipped like this honestly.

I was part of the mod community that made it run at 60 fps back then and laughed a lot when we discovered that the game is basically a bad optimized emulation. On the other hand it was useful as well, you can literally import everything from the PSX version without trouble, like the HD backgrounds or saves for example.

I’m really happy with the update, though to be fair it was at least playable in its initial state, even though it wasn’t the best gaming experience I’ve had (I played on Switch). Still loved every second of it, though.

Ehh. I think its running at between 30-60 hz now. The main problem I think that I last heard is the port is running on emulation software and not a native port for the PC exactly. Or maybe they changed the file structure in the last patch? Not sure.

There is no possibility for a "native port" of this game, as the source code no longer exists. Maybe this will change in 10+ years when we can train an AI to de-compile it 😅 Art sources are lost forever though.

@@WalrusFPGA Wait, they didn't archive the source code for the game? That explains a lot but damn, this poor game man it's always had so much stacked against it. Chrono Cross is so unique it really deserved much better than what it got when it launched. At the very least I'm glad to say there is some form that's playable in a decent state now.

Boggles the mind that backups weren't kept in a vault somewhere, especially for the artwork digitized at the highest quality possible. That would have made modern revisions of these games something entirely different.

What system is the footage for? It looks much better and closer to what the original PlayStation version is.......I think. (Haven't played it in over 20 years.)
