Great restoration job on an Imperial hardtop. For the record, this automobile is a standard sedan and not a limousine.

Beautiful. One of my all time favourite cars. These were Imperials w/a capital I. The paint was done to such a high degree, it rivaled or surpassed anything on earth. Mechanically, it has suspension to give a wonderful ride and fine handling, like all MOPARS of the 60's-70's. And the big, smooth 413 ci V-8 gave the driver decent acceleration w/o even trying. I had a '66 Chrysler Newport w/a '74 440 police car engine that I drove from 1991-2000. Loved it. It was very low on options and glitz compared to this machine, but still excellent to drive. Your Imperial.. She is a gorgeous dreamboat and thanks for this excellent HD video.

Nice tribute to a beautifully restored car! Only one small critique; the original exhaust sound on these cars was 'whisper quiet'. They had four mufflers, two front and two rear. Outside of that, your car is fantastic! Thank you for sharing!

the same guy designed this car designed the 1961 Continental. the style started in 64 and was a huge improvement over the previous Imperials. Like itsmegp46 said, its not a limo, its a sedan, but in black I can see why you might like to call it that. Its about the same size as a 65 Cadillac Sedan deVille or Lincoln

This is a very beautiful auto. Do you know its history? My father bought this exact car in 1965 and I recall it as a child. The black on black with its walnut work blew away any cadi or lincoln. The 413 was awsome. We pulled a two horse horse trailer thru wyoming USA and were averaging 95 MPH on I-80 with two horses! The car didnt even feel it and the ride was ever SOOOO smooth! My mother sold the car when I was in high school. BIG MISTAKE! I have been searching for our car as I would like it back! Last seen in Colorado. Same as yours but single exhaust pipe and a trailer hitch on the back. Anyone every finds this gem, let me know. Thanks.

Very nice car! I had the same car wich i bought in 1977, Chrysler Imperial Crown 1965. Same colour. You are lucky to have one, i should have keep mine. The ride of these Imperial is unique. Nothing to compare with the sluggish Cadillac or Lincoln back then.

This is the last year for the 413 cid V-8. In 1966, they came out with the 440. This is the first year for the column shift automatic transmission. The 1964 had the push button transmission, the last year for that. I think the '64's grille is prettier than this; but still, I believe the '64,'65, and '66's were the most beautiful cars ever made in this country. And look what Chrysler builds today.

Yes, look at what Chrysler builds today. No one knows what you're getting with Chrysler products now. Fiat? Mercedes? Generic? The damn shame is that Chrysler had just come back to this country and Obama made it so they had to sell themselves to Fiat. I haven't heard a good thing about Chrysler since Lee Iaccoca. I wish Walter Chrysler could come back from the grave and straighten out the mess his company has become.

There is something wrong with the exhaust system on this car, beautiful as it is. The Imperial would -never- make that much noise just idling. The idea was quiet and power, not rumbling and gurgling exhaust notes.

This is a family sedan, not a limousine, but in Europe I can see where the mixup might happen. My granddad used to drive this same car, only it was a 2 door hardtop. He would pile in all his grandkids (including me) 6 or 7 of us in the car and drive us to the Jersey shore. Being the only car crazy kid in our group, I remember Grandpa driving at better then 80 mph down the Garden State Parkway.

Well whether it is a limo or not (I don't think it is) - that is one fantastic car right there. If there was ever a cross-over between a high end luxury sedan and a real stretched limo, this is probably it. And he isn't the first person to think a regular Imperial was a limo though. (rides with Chuck Derer/62 Imperial-YT) and maybe he won't be the last either.

For all of the guys who insist that the IMPERIAL is , was, and will always be, a "Chrysler", explain THIS: On the VIN numbers all "Chryslers" (Newport, New Yorker, 300, etc) carried a "C" code. The IMPERIAL didn't . Under IT'S "Make" code,all IMPERIALS (Custom, Crown, LeBaron, Ghia Limousine) there was a "Y"code. TWO DIFFERENT MAKES. If The IMPERIAL was a "Chrysler", wouldn't it ALSO have had a "C" code ?Also consider THIS: (from Wikipedia) : "For the 1955 model year, the Imperial was launched and registered as a separate marque (make), apart from the Chrysler brand. It was a product of the new Imperial Division of Chrysler Corporation, meaning that the Imperial would be a make and division unto itself, and not bear the Chrysler name. Chrysler Corporation sent notices to all state licensing agencies in the then-48 states that the Imperial, beginning in 1955, would no longer be registered as a Chrysler, but as a separate make ." Why would the Chrysler Corporation go to such great lengths to separate The IMPERIAL into it's own MAKE and DIVISION, even to the point of contacting all Motor Vehicle Departments (DMV's) in the then-48 states to inform them of this change, if, as you guys claimed, IT NEVER HAPPENED ?Think about it.

williamg2552 : Never the less, would not Chrysler be considered the PARENT, company of the mighty Imperial? General Motors, is considered ( I am sure ), the Parent company, of Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick, and of course, the G.M.C. trucks......( Gee, they used to make, some handsome, HEAVY DUTY, COMMERCIAL TRUCKS. WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED? ) Any way, that is, MY understanding of what was considered, Parent Companies 😕 ! WELL, ........"YOU" all say, "Potato", and some of us, say "Potato",...... Let's just leave it be, and let us enjoy the BEAUTY, of these "OLD TIMERS"..... O.K.?😉
@williamg2552
@williamg2552 7 жыл бұрын
If we were to proceed from that logic, then we should be calling all General Motors cars "GM Chevrolet", "GM Cadillac" ,"GM Buick" etc. Or, Ford Motor Co cars as "Ford Lincoln", "Ford Mercury", "Ford Edsel", etc. But these cars don't go by their corporate names...only their individual division names. So should Imperial. When was the last time you heard other cars in the Mopar lineup referred to as "Chrysler Plymouth" "Chrysler Dodge" , or "Chrysler DeSoto" ? Have you ? I haven't either.

@williamg2552
@williamg2552 7 жыл бұрын
Steven Horton-Partially right, Steven. The 81-83's were still just Imperials, with separate "IMPERIAL" dealership signs , and no "Chrysler" name on the car or in it's marketing. Here's an ad from that period: Lee Iacocca tells Frank Sinatra " I've got a bunch of IMPERIAL DEALERS ready for them, Frank". (Not "Chrysler" or "Chrysler Imperial" Dealers). In fact, the name "Chrysler" appears nowhere in the ad. i.ebayimg.com/images/i/121793963512-0-1/s-l1000.jpg But , you're totally CORRECT about the 1990-93 Imperials.It was thought that re-adding the "Chrysler" nameplate would increase sales. But, sadly , it DIDN'T ...So they might just as well have kept the Imperial SEPARATE, for all the good it did. That K-Car-based , Front-drive car wasn't worthy of the IMPERIAL name anyway.

@discerningmind
@discerningmind 7 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem is that we were never taught to say Chrysler Corporation's Imperial. In a sense it was Chrysler's fault as they started out being Chrysler Imperial, and ended up being that again after 1975(?). For the years they were their own nameplate the trunk label should have said "Imperial by Chrysler Corporation". Another thing that would have brought understanding of being it's own make as it wasn't generally made clear are the different models within Imperial. Most consider Imperial to be just one car not realizing individual models/trims such as "LeBaron" "Crown" and so forth.
@TheItsmegp46
@TheItsmegp46 6 жыл бұрын
The major problem with this car was marketing. From the beginning, the Imperial was the highest level of Chrysler. Then came 1955 and the car was spun off as a separate make within Chrysler Corp. But there was a huge problem. While Cadillac and Lincoln and other luxury makes were sold in stand alone dealerships, Chrysler's smarmy attempt at new brand identity was to sell Imperial right along with Chrysler cars, including the lowly price leader, the Windsor and later, the Newport. The potential customer never made the disconnect between the two makes. It also didn't help that by the late 60's the Imperial was beginning to look like Plymouth and Chrysler from certain angles.
@robertmitchumii3710
@robertmitchumii3710 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it was both, the model first and then the make. The Imperial was so exclusive during that era that it stood alone simply as IMPERIAL for its superior styling as such. Just like today's unusual marketing of another brand such as foreign brand; HYUNDAI GENESIS which shows a stand alone badging for GENESIS that is completely free of HYUNDAI's slanted "H". However, IMPERIAL was still under the CHRYSLER's ownership, but as a separate luxury division of CHRYSLER.
@williamg2552
@williamg2552 7 жыл бұрын
Anyone who really knows the history of this car would NOT call it a "Chrysler" Imperial. Obviously, they don't know what the Chrysler Corporation did in 1955. That was the year that the Imperial was spun off from the Chrysler Division, and became it's OWN MAKE and DIVISION.

In reply to chargalant: The Imperial's problem was one of marketing. It was a fine car, better than rivals in many respects, but although it was officially a brand in its own right most people still thought of and referred to it as a Chrysler which it was through 1954. The Chrysler brand just did not have the reputation of luxury and panache as Cadillac. Imperial also took a beating in depreciation.

+Drewbygus It's not a limousine. Apparently, there is not a German word which distinguishes limousines from sedans. This looks like a plain 'Crown', rather than a Lebaron. The '65 limousine was built by Ghia, in Italy. That was the last Ghia year, after which a company in Spain did the conversions, followed by a couple of outfits in the States. The Imperial Ghia limousines cost more than did most Rolls Royces.

Exactly. There were no actual '65 limos. 1964 limos were given the 1965 styling changes. You can tell though, because true 1965 cars no longer had a push-button automatic. The car in this video has a regular column-shift automatic. It is thus a 1965 model-year car, and as no limousines were made off of 1965 chassis, this is NOT a limo. It is simply a 1965 sedan. Good night Ethel.

So were Dodge, Plymouth, and Desoto. But those cars were NOT called by the corporate name. They were known by their individual DIVISION names. From 1955 on, so was Imperial . it CEASED being a MODEL of Chrysler, and became a SEPARATE MAKE unto itself . Starting in 1955, The Chrysler Corporation had FIVE DISTINCT MAKES and DIVISIONS: PLYMOUTH, DODGE, DeSOTO , CHRYSLER...and the now separate IMPERIAL. Want PROOF ?
