I love these Chrysler Tech videos. Clear, concise and mainly easy to understand with a little character humor thrown in. I bet the original production were on reel to reel. Seeing them now digitally transfered is pure joy. I only wish I had all the Chrysler Testing equipment.

Great instructional video not to mention the sweet 1972 Duster 340!

No joke!! I had a milder '74 340 in my charger and it was a GREAT engine that pulled hard through 6000rpm. I can only imagine how much more awesome it would be in an A body.

i worked in Chrysler engine development and realized two things about this subject. 1 was the filed mechanic was a little shy of these systems and the point cars still needed lots of service. so i opened "dial a mechanic" and stayed very busy for 15 years and stayed at Chrysler. I also looked for me in the videos i did lots of this but more at corp research level. wish i was better at business.

Very interesting. What doctou mean by, "1 was the filed mechanic...."

He meant field mechanic - one issue was the field mechanics were wary of working on this system which often left it neglected.

My 78 Newport is a very happy car with this system. For some reason, my Newport is a rare model that did not use ''lean burn''. I plan to read more about Walter Chrysler and I am glad Lee Iacocca saved his corporation.

You are SO lucky to not have the Lean Burn System!!! Many Factory components perform well, as long as you understand them and do proper maintenance...... But with that Lean Burn CRAP, I've gotten far better performance AND better emissions readings, by *ripping the whole system OUT* and installing a good quality aftermarket or earlier Chrysler Ignition System!! Over 20+ years, I've done that to several customer's Cars, and never had a complaint!

The Lean Burn setups work good for a while, you just have to carry a couple extra units in the trunk when you go more than about 50 miles! 😉

Had a 1980 Newport with 318, never had lean burn, only the electronic ignition. Also had a 1980 Cordoba with a slant 6, no lean burn on that one either. Had an 84, 87, and 89 Fifth Avenues, all had lean burn. Needless to say, liked the cars without lean burn much more, had the computer go out on the 89, quite expensive piece to replace if I can recall, the lean burn was kind of a garbage system I believe.

@@jackanapes6676 is it possible to convert lean burn to electronic ignition? I might be getting a Gran Fury and 78 LeBaron soon both I believe use lean burn. Can it be done neatly? Without splicing in modules not meant to be there like some putting in GM modules. Something that works but also looks either stock or if it must be aftermarket, look professional. I know the extreme way is to look for a Dodge full-sized truck of 1990-1991 and pull its 318 and get rid the carburetor and lean burn as that version is EFI but that is obviously an extreme last resort.
@patrickwayne3701

@@chrismc410 you only need to get on SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT's website and order a stand alone Mopar Performance electronic ignition system for replacement of the lean burn system.

Great vid. Make sure the diagphram for the vacuum advance is good and that it is plugged at the rigth place on the dist. If not you'll go nuts to tune it. Also if the oillite bushings that support the dist shaft are worn, usually the top one the timing will be uneven and it will run rough. Had a van that went it the shop for a clogged intake crossover and the mechanic must have broke the piece of plastic on the dist shaft that is in the engine. It locked the oil pump and unpressed the gear that runs the pump and the dist. Buddy and me bougth an aftermarket pump shaft and oil pump, real cheap, probably made in a foreign country. Had to remove motor mount and the pan in cold November weather and I also had a badflu. It fixed it however I would have to periodically advance the timing because the engine would run real slow. Probably that aftermarket oil pump gear drive that was not pressed correctly.

Well, super glad I found this video. I've been looking for a full explanation of this system cause I just replaced the plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and coil to still not have any spark in my roadrunner. Guess I am going to need to get a voltmeter, learn to use it, then learn how to use it on this system since I doubt I'll find their special testers from this video cheap.

I bought a GP tool that tests a bunch of electronic ignition systems. ECU from Chrysler, HEI, Ford, even Lean Burn. Really nifty tool that I plan on using quite a bit, I don't mind points, but I prefer not to have the headache dealing with them.

@@eurekasevenwave2297 I remember learning point type ignition systems when I started wrenching in the mid 70's,, back then, Sorensen and Echlin made unquestionably the highest quality points. In these years gone by,,, it is depressing to see how much has gone overseas with corporate raiders and as a result,,, quality and experience have practically disappeared.

@@patrickwayne3701 It's why I want to go to Electronic Ignition at some point in the future. Points aren't hard to tune, but the sheer quality (or rather, lack there-of), doesn't make them worth it to run compared to using EI. Plus, EI does seem to have more benefits compared to points anyways, like more consistent plug firing.

Still being developed in Dunmurry and Northern California then. Wouldn't be out till late 1981 and really out until 1983 with the last models of the first incarnation of DMC. They will be standard equipment of the new annual limited production release of new DMC-12s and once approved, new model DMCs. Two known models produced in the intended 1984-1985 prototype with plutonium powered fuel system intended to replace the PRV engine and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel system. Company closed but the prototype was purchased prior to closure and an for the most part, excellent review by the purchaser, a fellow by the name of Brown. He did site starter problems as the only major issue other than the obvious fuel availability. High electrical charge channeled in was shown to be an effective workaround. A lesser known prototype, intended to be a 1985 mid 1986 model successfully married an highly-experimental cold fusion reactor with a highly modified, quad turbo PRV V-6 prototype with the same Bosch K-Jetronic with cooling vents that doubled as rear thrusters for ultra-high performance. A lady by the name of C.C. Brown acquired the car by way of a used car dealer who got it via auction. She said it was the perfect anniversary gift for her husband.
