Time to tackle the transmission on our 1937 Ford Coupe race car. Davin pulls the rusty, crusty transmission apart to see what may or may not need to be repaired or replaced. Fingers crossed it just needs to be cleaned, lubed, and reassembled!

You're right of course, but some pretty highly specialized automated equipment made those parts. This is not that old of a transmission. 60s-70s-80s maybe.
@oikkuoek
@oikkuoek 3 жыл бұрын
Tip for today: Sandblast the parts before putting them into the washer. This way the bast medium won't get into the inside surfaces, and the dust that gets inside, stucks in gunk and gets washed off. If you own a bakery, you can get those parts colored before the day ends, and start assembly right after parts arrive.

I had a 1976 Chevy 1 ton dually, 3 x 3 that we purchased new and drove until 1986 ,by then we had over a million miles on it, with 5 engine rebuilds accomplished and a SM465 stick, so I determined to rebuild the transmission to keep it reliable, tore it all down and found out that nothing was wrong with it, after a million miles all I had to do is put new gaskets in it and it was perfect, the truck is gone now destroyed in a wreck, still have the transmission, I'll never let it go. Still perfect condition!!

I have a 1983 SM465 that has lived through 3 trucks now. It now has a 1986 Advanced Adapter ranger underdrive and a 427bb in front of her and she pushes a 1970 k5 rock crawler. Only work ever done is fluids and gaskets and synchro. I guess she is at 350k miles now
@briang4470

The only real problem the sm465 get is when they jump out of 3rd but they sell repair kits to fix that, other than that they are bullet proof.

Davin,,,you’ve done a bunch of engines and some “normal” transmissions now and all of those episodes are great!! I love watching them. I’m a Buick guy so the nailhead and straight 8 episodes are my favorites. You’re almost done with the straight 8 and then it will go in your Buick but when are you going to go through the Dynaflow that’s bolted to it? My 62 Electra has a Dynaflow and I think that would be an awesome set video’s for the Redline Rebuild series. Not your “normal” transmission. Plus,,like 5 people these days have had them apart. That would really be cool to see the process of one being rebuilt. Just a thought,,I’d love to see you rebuild your Dynaflow!!!! Keep up the good work. Thanks for the videos and your knowledge!!

Chrysler NV A833 in a cast iron case. Strongest factory four speed used in 60s muscle cars. In the 70s it aws reengineered into a three speed with overdrive. In the 80s Chevrolet used a version. the NV 440 or My6 in 2 wheel drive pickups. Case has the Chevy trans to bellhousing bolt pattern. A little hard to find but well worth the hunt.

The 833 4 speed, one tough tranny. Debuted is 64. Yours have the older style shift forks & the long output shaft. To make a removal tool for the reverse gear shaft I used a large open end wrench & cut off the end to use as a fork to straddle the support inside the case then fabricated a puller using a 1/2" fine thread bolt. Easy to do, just study the situation a bit. Passon has parts for that trans. Check shift syncros for wear. That trans was also made in an overdrive version.

We have a monster 16" lathe in our work, motor rewinding. Last week, at the end of the day one of the boys was reminiscing on helping his dad work on that lathe. I guess the original gearbox went bad ,so he rigged up a 1930s Chrysler transmission to work instead. Haha , yup this vid looks like what's at the shop,they just added another gear 🤣 Their grandfather opened the doors in 1932.

The weak link in these transmissions when drag racing was the tailshaft (back ) bearing .. I use to drag race a 69 ROAD in the early 80s . But that was after 6000 rpm launches, ram 6 puck clutch, the bearing cage failed, allowing the roller balls to seperate under launch the load on the gear face pushed the tail shaft upward all hell broke loose the car moved foward and regage gears snaped the solid u joint .. . But these are great transmissions, best used with verta gate.. (drag racing) A friend drove the car once and said that was the best 4 spd he ever shifted.

For those who don't know, the entire disassembly/reassembly procedure for these can be found in the Work Shop Manual. Note the position of the linkages - this is the standard layout, not the Overdrive layout. The MoPaR (or Direct Connection) Performance handbook lists all the modifications needed to make these survive as a racing gearbox, including how to modify the syncro rings and dog rings for Clutchless flat shifting.

Okay, I have watched your videos many times and found a few hidden treasures. This particular instance is a bit mind boggling in that you use a steel surface hammer to pound on the tail shaft. If you cannot afford a mallet or brass hammer, I will purchase either of your choice for you.

I’m sure that you know this, you want to use Vaseline to hold cluster gear needle bearings in place. If you use grease, the gear lube will not break down the grease and it will clog the lube holes. I really enjoyed building manual transmissions.
@PiDsPagePrototypes
@PiDsPagePrototypes 3 жыл бұрын
"Grease" is also made using Clay, so can very quickly turning in to Lapping Compound inside a gearbox if the seals fail and water gets in. There's also an assembly lube designed for use in gearboxes, and like Vaseline, it breaks down and gets absorbed in to the oil.

@@PiDsPagePrototypes Grease has been thickened by lithium for the last several decades. I would use white assembly grease, which is basically whipped oil.
