As a doctor I find it very helpful, and indeed, I ask my whole bible study to pray many times (without names, of course). Prayer for the sick asks for physical healing, but also spiritual healing of the patient and the family as well as prayers for preparation for facing suffering and death. In addition, when I tell my patients I am praying for them they are usually quite touched and comforted to know that the steward of their health cares also about their total being.

Hearing about the Patristics really helps to widen the aperture, rather than limiting exposure to one or two Doctors, thus risking a distortion or overreach or over rotation within Christianity.

If I may say, Chrysostom rarely touches on the allegorical understanding of Scripture, but he maintained his holiness. Jerome of Stridon was really good for quite a few years, I am not sure why he wandered off after that. I am so glad that he preserved the teachings of Origen Adamantius, the number one systematic theologian. I do appreciate that Augustine had a change of heart after spending most of his life in heresy. I absolutely love the teachings of Gregory The Great, especially, when he expounds on the metaphors and allegories in Sefer Iyov.

Bishop Barron, I hope and I wish that you include the great Armenian saint and poet, St. Gregory of Narek (10th century saint) who was declared as a doctor of the Church by Pope Francis, in one of your shows. His book of lamentations is an exceptional piece of literature and a spiritual jewel. I was skeptical about whether his book could be translated to other languages bc of it’s unique vocabulary and spiritual depth. And I found out that I was right in my speculation. None of the translations do him justice. Bishop Barron, I enjoy listening to your videos and I consider you to be one of the most educated people/clergy of our time. God bless you, and Brendon too.

Reading De Civitate Dei right now and it is extraordinary how in depth St. Augustine goes to defend Christianity - not only from Paganism but of his former belief, Manichaeism, Neo-Platonism and the fact that he uses very little scripture throughout the first few books - it would seem that the Aeneid was more known to him than the Bible. However, come the final books, St. Augustine really explores Christian and philosophical thought. It is really quite beautiful to see how he plans ahead and links between his efforts. And so I say St. Augustine says, ‘join me in rendering thanks to God, Amen. Amen.’.

Since you have made this we have suffered the covid pandemic, and your former colleague, Bishop David O'Connell has been tragically murdered. but on the positive side St Irenaeus has been made a Doctor of the Church, and you have been made a Diocesan Bishop. Were you able to return to California to attend Bishop David's funeral and do you think he will be /should be declared a Martyr?

Jerome had the same temper as the todays people in south Croatia. Jerome said 'Forgive me God because I am Dalmatinac' (lat. 'Parce mihi, Domine, quia Dalmata sum') in context of his temper. Croats in south Croatia still call themselfs 'Dalmatinci' in the regional context. There is a theory that Jeronim invented unique croatian letters named 'glagoljica'. There are no solid evidence but it was belif among croatian people. In 1468. Croats called Jeronim Croatian (in 'Petrisov zbornik'). 1248. pope Inocencije IV. noted that among the Croats there is that beleif.

@Peter the hermit I’ve heard this definition of mercy a lot. It seems to be the primary emphasis of understanding mercy in Western Christianity. However, I’ve heard the same defined by Eastern Christianity more as a healing action; not as much forensic or juridical. As a prime example, the practice of the Jesus Prayer. (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.) Rather than understanding mercy as a repetitious groveling, a fearful request to not be punished, it’s more a prayer asking our Savior to heal us, to apply a healing balm to our wounds and sickness, to restore us to good spiritual health.

Ultimate surrender is understanding that Christ paid the price for sin on the cross once and for all. Faith produces good works, not visa versa. But yes, if you will do that out of love for Him and others or if He calls you to it, then do it :)

Jerome's criticism is expressed against Augistine with the mode of the one who is be all end all. I totally relate. But at the end of the day it comes down to the critique of one who is trying to be good against another who is doing the same.

Doctor of the church is merely a person who expresses dogma in an articulate way. There are those who express Christ in a greater manner but lack the articulation.

Actually the Cathecism talks about predestination, but a the the same time we choose our actions with our free will. God knows what we'll do, but he doesn't force us to do it. Kind of like how you know a person so well that you know how she would react. Obviously, in the context of a sickness, free will doesn't have much place as it's mostly a natural process, so predestination becomes much more "determined".

two facts should cause us to be very cautious when giving too much credit to the 'church fathers'. Paul's warning at Acts 20:28-30 where he fortold that 'amoung the leaders of the church 'men would arise and speak twisted things'. And secondly the fact that the Hellenist culture of greek philosophy was so prevelent and admired by all interllectuals that it greatly influenced the church fathers reasonings & subsequesnt writings! We only need the New testement for our faith!

No.....confession (through The Son, to the Father), then necessarily repentance....turning from that sin, having agreed with God about it.....and receiving His forgiveness according to His plan....of atonement and redemption. 1 John 1:8-10 This is my understanding as a Reformed believer

No. Repentance means "a change of mind". It is a decision to turn from sin to God and then believe in Christ who will lead you by His strength out of sin.
