A great man in the history of Christianity.If I ever won a big prize in the lottery or other sweepstakes,a pet project would be to found St.John Chrysostam Academy,a co-ed Orthodox boarding school for grades 5-12.I have school colors,mascot and uniforms for the school.Its motto would APUD DEUM OMNIA POSSIBILIA SUNT,Latin for With God all things are possible.I also have name for some of the buildings and other facilities. I absolutely love to hear his beautiful sermon every Easter.

"Chrysostom" is not his last name, as you implied in the first moments of your video. "Chrysostom" MEANS Goldenmouth.

Four years of detachment or ascetic detachment greatly serve a person who is on the way to what is called Self-Realization.

Yes. Thank you C.B.! Another tortured Doctor of the Church who "graced" the world with his presence. It is said that emotional turbulence raises consciousness. John Chrysostom was marched to death under guard.

Did he recount his conversion in any of his writings?
@patrickkilroy6512Ай бұрын
Interestingly, John's supporters in Constantinople would outlive him and even be able to exert enough influence to have his remains brought back to Constantinople and buried in the mausoleum of the Holy Apostles. He was the first non-imperial individual to be buried there. His remains were received in triumphal procession and the emperor Theodosius II (son of Arcadius and Eudoxia) would publicly kneel before his relic, begging forgiveness for his parents indiscretions. This rehabilitation after his death is doubtless the reason so many of his writings survive today.

2:29 He said, " To what was the accepted path at that time by entering onto the monastic life." This is a strange statement, as if this lifestyle was not led by the Holy Spirit or no longer the acceptable to God. Was it not the Holy Spirit leading and guiding Christ for 40 days into the wilderness? Or was it just," The accepted path of that time?" And what about John the Baptist? He lived hundreds years before Chrysostom he was called to this life by the Holy Spirit. Paul the Apostle was called to this life for a few years as well, that Christ may teach him. Discernment heard this statement and a redflag went up...Matthew 19:12 there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

I completely agree with your statement. It might not have been as clear as I planned in writing the script. I was trying to point out that as John leaned into his calling from God to join the ministry, the most accepted way of doing that was by joining the monastery. It is not to downgrade the move, matter of fact, John's teacher Libanius, a worldly philosopher, thought his move was foolish, but John knew this call to the mountains to be an extremely important part of his calling to become closer to God.

John Chrysostom Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος c. 347 - 14 September 407 He was an important Early Church Father who served as archbishop of Constantinople. He is known for his preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, his Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. The epithet Χρυσόστομος (Chrysostomos, anglicized as Chrysostom) means "golden-mouthed" in Greek and denotes his celebrated eloquence. Chrysostom was among the most prolific authors in the early Christian Church, although both Origen of Alexandria and Augustine of Hippo exceeded Chrysostom.

The teachings of Saint John Chrysostom conflict with all Christian sects that aren't Orthodox. Only the Orthodox faith has preserved the truth ☦️

“ Saint John Chrysostom, the famous Bishop of Constantinople, ascribed the origin of enslavement to the insatiable greed of man and insisted upon Paul's view that in the Church the social distinction of free and slave did not exist…”

Why are some people so preoccupied wuth the 'church farhers'? Are they not satisfied with the words of Jesus & his apostles? Are they not aware of Paul's stark warnings about the "Men who wouls speak twisted things to draw the discples after themselves" ( Acts 20:28-30)? Surelt the Holy bible "fully equips us for EVERY good work"? ( 1 Tim 3:17). Lets just stick to the bible, its "inspired by God" and NOT by men!

Of course the Holy Scripture is God's word. But many today do not see that the Church was given by Christ, and proceeds the New Testament -- considerably. We read the Fathers because they, inspired by the Spirit and often with great suffering, clarified what writings would become the New Testament. You should know that in large measure the Fathers looked to what had been used liturgically (in services) to know what was valid Scripture. I came into the Holy Church at age 47 from Protestantism when I learned this (among other things). We all do well to remember that Jesus promises us that the Church will prevail -- this is the key. And she has prevailed over all 2000+ years. There were hard times of course, but the Church never left, God was always faithful, and He chooses to use people in every age. The Fathers were His great servants in the early centuries. God bless your journey.

@@markweisman6326 Thank you for your lovely comment! I agree that we owe a debt of gratitude to the 'church fathers' for the bible 'cannon'! and confirming the accuracy of many historical facts of the Christian faith. However in my study of their actual teachings, its evident that most of them were influenced by the helenist world they were part of which put great store on greek philosophy. I can give you a number of examples of this that the teachings of Aristotle & plato surfaced in much of their writings! ( One example; LOGOS. The logos of Aristotle was the notion that it is 'divine reason', thus just a aspect of God himself rather than the 'Logos' of John's gosple who was an actual PERSON, namely Jesus Christ who came down from heaven as God's dear son to save the world! John uses personal pronouns like 'His' & 'his' to indicate the Word was a real Person & not 'reason' e.t.c. ( see also Rev 19:13) The doctrine of the immortal soul is another concept borrowed from greek mythology & not taught in the NT. There its a REWARD for those who belong to Christ!. Anyway, I dont judge. Jesus said that the "wheat & tares" & the "sheep & goats" are NOT seperated till Christ returns! So in ALL Christian chuches past and present there are genuine Christians and sadly false! You must admit this is the same in the catholic as well as the protestant church.

@@markweisman6326 Its true the formation of the new testament was the reuslt of the 'church fathers efforts! But so was the Hebrew scriptures the task of the Jewish nation! Paul said "Unto them were committed the the Holy writings" ( Rom 3:2) Yet he showed later in the same epistle that "All day long I have stretched out my hands unto a disobedient people", ( Rom (;10:21) He then shows how faith in Christ can be the possession of all, Jews & gentiles! Aso God has used men in the past to accomplish his will, though they were not his faithful servants! ( Cyrus for example Isa 45:1) Even calling him "my anointed".
