Chthon In Doctor Strange 2?! | Geek Culture Explained

Chthon is a name I've brought up here in the past on this channel because of his connection with the Darkhold. It was him who wrote the Darkhold that Wanda was seen reading in the series finale of WandaVision. There are images floating around of a creature in one of the glass shards in the latest "Doctor Strange 2: Multiverse Of Madness" poster and I just had to talk about it. In this video, "Chthon In Doctor Strange 2?!", I discuss whether or not I believe Chthon is in the film and how it would all tie into the future of the MCU! What do you guys think? @@antoniosmith7757 i agree. Marvel has always had this habit of messing up strong characters, and wanda is great example. They can easily elevate her from common earth issues, and have her deal with other wordly mystical entities with her power levels but they rarely do that instead they weaken her, be it weaking her mentally or in some other way. It's sad.

The idea of a space race for America Chavez’ powers is pretty cool. I could even see Wanda initially thinking she can BS Chthon and avoid his total corruption and try to have America help her get her kids, but then ending up out of control.

I think it'll be like Shang-Chi. They're just gonna gloss over Chthon's origins, and say he's an entity like Dormomu. Maybe give a little context to give perspective of his amount of power, but I don't think they're going to go into great detail.

Easy way to "fix" the Darkhold issue between this one and Agents of Shield and whatever, there's 2 Darkholds. What I mean is that in the comics Chthon did write the original Darkhold, which is the one we see Agatha and Wanda have, but also in the comics the Darkhold was later transcribed onto actual paper scrolls (the original was made on stuff other than paper) and was compiled into a book by Morgan le Fay who we see in Runaways Season 3, and Morgan's book is the one we see in Agents of Shield and Runaways and such, and is powered by the Dark Dimension because, as we learn in Runaways Season 3, Morgan was sealed inside the Dark Dimension and has some level of control over it and everything. I think in the show Morgan even refers to it as "my book" at some point. So both can exist and not contradict each other and everything because of that. the one Wanda has is Chthon's book, the one in Agents of Shield and Runaways and everything is Morgan's book.

So Chthon, an Inter-Dimensional Demon, created the Darkhold. If he's the main villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it would be interesting to see Chthon manipulate Wanda by making a deal with her to get her Sons back.

Man, I've had a few Sleepwalker comics back in the day. I thought he was pretty awesome. Most of the issues were crossovers with Ghostrider and Wolverine, but still...he was neat

One thing to remember is Agatha has her own show coming. I'm sure the spell on her will break and she's going to show up to drop some knowledge at some point. The MCU doesn't have anyone more knowledgable on what's happening than her. She had the darkhold for what a hundred years?

I look at the Dweller in darkness from Shang-Chi as 1 of many creatures that are ridiculously overpowered to come into the MCU. With Celestials appearing more frequently now too along with Shuma Gorath(Tim the a**hole octopus 🐙) and possibly Nightmare too, Chthone will probably make an appearance just based on the direction that we're getting more involved in Cosmic battles going forward.

I'd compare it to Kang/Thanos as thanos would pummel Kang in a straight fight but it wouldn't get to that stage as Kang would 4D chess Tf out of him. Mephisto is the kinda guy who does that to supernatural entities.

Seriously though let me explain. I don’t know if this will be in Doctor Strange but this is the multiverse and Chthon’s place in it in a nutshell. In the beginning there was darkness and unity it was all dark and there was only one universe more an amorphous darkness than a solid. The creation of light was the start. It fractured things and broke the darkness and as the celestials went around creating lights it kept fracturing things and this is represented in the mirror and prisms we see. The stable universes are kept stable by the cosmic beings like the celestials and galactus and the balance of the infinity stone singularitys. There are, however; universes like dormamu’s dark dimension where the celestials failed. Chthon is in one of those dark places. The difference between Knull who hates the light and is driven by the desire to kill everything or dormamu who is just methodically expanding his dimension or even mephisto and nightmare who just seem to use souls as bragging rights Chthon is an entity of despair and consumption. Think of him as a cosmic wendigo or zombie galactus. He feeds on life force the same way it nurtures the celestial eggs. The people in Shang chi fled their dimension because something had devoured it. That little thing we saw at the end was a mid boss at best and not something that had consumed the soul of a universe. It hates the light. It needs to be invited in. It feeds on life force. It is a vampire of celestial proportions.

I've been thinking this since we saw Wanda seemingly living outside of Wundagore mountain at the end of WandaVision, which the mountain itself is where Cthon's essence is kept, and he is the author of the Darkhold

What if Chthon is using an alternate version of Scarlett Witch and Dormmamu is using an alternate version of Dr Strange, like Zombie Dr Strange, and they're both racing to get America Chavez. Then the main universe versions of Scarlet Witch and Dr Strange have to stop their alternate versions.

In a deleted scene the Other even taunts Loki about the scepter, and Loki realizes he forgot. The Other is shown being able to overpower the scepter (mind stone). Not only that but He Who Remains being killed was set up by The Other.

Wanda is being manipulated by Chthon via the Darkhold and his connection to her. Strange is "the best of us" because he fights to save Wanda when others want to kill her. By freeing her from Chthon, he makes the Elder God's plan backfire as Wanda will become his enemy.

Rob, I have loved Chthon passionately since that Thor Special that showed Chthon writing an Unholy Bible to wreak evil, create Vampires, and bring him back to the Earthly Realm. Where does all Dark Magic Come From? The Darkhold, every ritual, every invocation for power, all from Chthon. But He Is No Dormammu, for Dormammu Has Defeated Eternity, Is More Than A Mere Hell Lord. Frankly, I Have Preferred SET As My Favorite Elder God, He Was My Favorite Robert E. Howard Villain in Conan. But Dormammu has billions of followers, lots of victories, and takes no backseat to Chthon. But hey, others will disagree.

ive been on the chthon band wagon since the moment that darkhold was revealed in wandavision. its only logical. the scarlot witch, chaos magic, the darkhold and now we have references to wondagore mountain in the newest trailer. this is the easiest, simplistest story line marvel could follow. which they tend to do. given that chthon is to much of a big bad for him to be the main villain of MOM. my money is on chthon being a ost credit scene.

How does Kang fit into all of this? Are we going to get an end credit of Kang chillen somewhere watching it all go down? This whole movie is a Nexus overload. What happens if Galactus appears? What if Dr. Doom is a variant of Kang? How does Secret Wars tie in? Is it all happening at the same time? I have at least 50 other questions, im so hyped!

Not sure how true but at the end of time kang variant told loki he seen everything happen and pruned whatever messed up his perfect timeline. Ima assume since he’s at the end of time he already knows how all of this plays out

Kang may not fit into this story, if he does it'll be very little, especially since we know he's for sure in Ant-Man 3. We may get a credits scene with him, but IDK. I doubt highly that Galactus is going to show up, especially since they seem to have all the focus on Kang and everything, and having Galactus show up this early would just overshadow and arguably undo the menace and epicosity and everything of the Kang story they seem to be telling. Doom likely won't be a Kang variant (fans wouldn't like that, and that would be too big of an alteration from Doom himself), if there is a Kang Variant somewhere it's possible it could be one of the younger Iron Man characters (Harley, Morgan Stark, Riri Williams, etc.) since Kang had a young Iron Man version in the actual comics, or potentially even a child or grandchild of a Reed and Sue if they want to do that because Kang is actually their 30th century descendant in the comics named Nathaniel Richards. Secret Wars probably doesn't tie in, I feel it's still way too soon to even be thinking about thinking about Secret Wars (that wasn't a typo, I meant to have 2 thinking abouts there), despite all the "rumors" and everything. Is it all happening at the same time as what? itself? the Loki show? the Wandavision show? I'd say no, all those events happen at different times.

Cthon wants to open a portal and come back to earth. Wanda goes for a person who can open portals to other dimensions at will. Yeah makes sense.

Rob, I'm a huge fan of your videos. You quite got me into reading comics as well! As much as I'd love to see Chthon in MoM there's a speculation going around stating that the demon figure in the broken glass shard in the official poster is actually the character D'Spayre. This theory is quite supported with the official release of marvel toys as well where figures like Rintrah were included. Just wanted to know your take on it? Would you be able to check and may be update us on who D'Spayre is and if he could play an important role?

Oooof, Chthon the darkest of the Elder Gods and *literally* the master of all Black Magic in the Marvel Universe. Having him take a role in the MCU would be *very* interesting indeed, We are talking about about a being who devoured its own siblings for power, degenerating into a demon in the process, his presence is poisonous to the Sorcerer Supreme and Vampires, werewolves, witches and all manner of demons and other horrors owe their existence to him. Not to mention he was the source of Wanda's magical power in the comics (Chaos Magic and all that) Very few beings in *existence* (as far as the Marvel Universe is concerned) have the kind of power and scope as he does and outside the Celestials and The Living Tribunal (who considering the name dropped he got in the First Doctor Strange), the Marvel Cinematic Universe has *nothing* that can tangle with it. This is a being more powerful than *all* the Hell Lords and someone who The archangel Lucifer fought against his forces in the distant past, before his fall even. When someone like Shuma-Gorath is technically indirectly subservient to you due to using the kind of magic (Chaos Magic) *you* invented, you know that you are easily one of the biggest fishes around. Honestly, he *might* get a name dropped as someone who might be "influencing" the Multiuniverse Madness but I don't think he might directly appears in the quite just yet (Of course, don't quote me on that!) But not going to lie, seeing He Who Holds The Darkness outright in a film would be both utterly fantastic and immensely freaky.

I still think its Dormammu. You have said it yourself , Marvel often takes the simplest approach. Revenge from the lord of the Dark Dimension with the time stone now gone - IMO that sounds as simple as you can get. Chthon just over-complicates the whole story.

The old ones/Eldritch beings built that city R'lyeh it has a temple in it that they all copied their dark magic knowledge from, down into their texts, from the darkhold to the necronomicon they're just imperfect pieces of what's in that temple. Marvel won't copy that comic exactly but it's gonna be the closet adaption You'll see.

I’ve been saying for some time marvel should retcon hell lords for mcu and have them be Cthon, Shuma(Gargantus), dormamu, Mephisto, and Nightmare. And in multiverse, nightmare used Mordo, Cthon uses Wanda, dormamu sends Clea, Shuma is chasing America, and Strange makes deal with Mephisto (wear he catches glimpse of Doom vs Mephisto)

There is just soo many stories and events that the MCU can use for the next 10-15 years, I wouldn’t be surprised if DS2:MoM deals with dark dimension and Dormamu and then the MCU kind of moves away from all the dark dimension evil stuff/stories. Like a one-off and then back to regular non-evil/magic/dark/dimension adventures for several years/movies. I have one question though: In the 1st Doctor Strange movie, its explained that the fire sparkly portals that the sorcerers make allow them travel through the multiverse as long as they have an extremely clear picture of where they want to go. Now is that also a downside when compared to America Chavez' powers? Because why do we need Chavez when all the sorcerers in the MCU can travel through the multiverse using their portals? Or are they limited to the places imaged in their heads to visualize? Whereas Chavez just knows every places without needing a clear visualization of where she goes? It'll be more reasonable if Scarlet Witch/Wanda needs her because as far as we've seen, Wanda cannot travel through the multiverse herself. Unless she's figured out how by reading the Dark Hold??

Ok, there are major differences between Chthon and Dormammu both in their very naturr and their power-levels. Dormammu given the proper manner can and have had manifested on Earth Dimension before. On the other-hand, Chthon unlike Dormammu cannot fully manifest himself in Earth Dimension has there is no dimensional rift big enough to accomodate the vast mystical energies he possess. That is why Chthon most of the time rely on avatars and host to possess upon manifesting on Earth Dimension. Dormammu rules the Dark Dimension, a part of the Splinter-Realms. The Dark Dimension has already existed before Dormammu has conquered it. On the other hand, Chthon created his own dimension - The Flickering Realm from his own power. And unlike Dormammu who shares the Splinter Realms with other Hell-Lords and Death Gods like Mephisto, Hela, Hades, Belasco, Lucifer, etc - Chthon rules the Flickering Realm by himself, hence why he is considered omnipotent in his own realm. Also, Dormammu is a conqueror. He wants to obtain Earth Dimension to be part of his empire. That is what motivates him, same how Mephisto and other Hell-Lords wants to obtain as many souls as possible. Chthon on the other hand has no clear intention but to spread chaos, madness and suffering across the cosmos hence why so many beings have sacrificed so much to prevent his return. Dormammu was once bested by Agamotto and was once banished by the Elder Goddess Gaea. Both Agamotto and Gaea are inferior in terms of power compared to Chthon. And at it has been said in this video, even Dormammu invokes Chthon's power.

The more videos I watch and the more comics I read through I'm really just starting to think that we're getting all the "demons" in this movie - Nightmare, CThon, Shuma Gorath, even maybe Dormammu, DSpayre. I think all of all these enemies will start falling through the cracks of the multiverse and maybe the Strange in the Illuminati is tracking them down when something happens and he needs Multiversal help. Unfortunately Wanda is a high priority muliltiversal threat so they also have to deal with that on top of all the demons coming through. It's gonna be so nuts.

Just my theory Chthon could very well be the secret villain controlling Wanda. Professor X could tell the truth that Wanda from his universe is a mutant whose father is Magneto; when she was born in Wundagore, Chthon marked her as his vessel since she is a Nexus being. She would be easy to manipulate in all realities. After having kids and realizing mutants are a threat to her happiness, she cast a spell and said, “No more Mutants,” and that’s why the MCU doesn’t have any mutants, they were there and now erased. Now with them out of the way and our Wanda looking for her children, Chthon can manipulate her to destroy the rest of the heroes and force America Chavez to set him free. At the end of a huge battle our Wanda sacrifices herself leaving us with Mutant Wanda and realizing what she’s done, reverses the no more mutants spell and bam… We have mutants back in the MCU. Just my theory, I can’t wait for this movie!!

@@marcelcjr9313 regardless of looking like a purple Squidward I found the redesign pretty drastic they took the humanoid aspects of it way and it became more of a beastly dragon like squid with mind tricks. Maybe they did it for the dragon on dragon battle at the end who knows. Not arguing the movie it was awesome just hope they keep the humanoid elements for Chthon like they did with Dormammu.
