A lot of this season has at times reminded me of Alias, when Sydney was first dealing with her mom after believing her mom was dead for almost 30 years. Particularly Mary shooting Chuck, which is what Irina did when she and Sydney were first reunited and for much the same reason. Irina was being watched when she was talking to Sydney just as Mary was being watched when talking with Chuck at the restaurant. But there a big differences between Mary Bartowski and Irina Dervko.

I would have respected this plotline a lot more if Chuck's mom actually was evil, and they had to make her see that what she was doing was wrong.
