One of my favorite aspects of this show is reflected in this scene - the tragic villain. Hartley Winterbottom and Daniel Shaw, both made "evil" because the agency they worked for betrayed them in one way or another. For Shaw, it was as simple as ordering his wife killed based on possibly faulty information, and for Winterbottom it was sending a scientist into the field using untested technology and science, both scenarios ruining their respective lives and making them something they were never meant to be.

I almost cried in this scene. Seeing his happy face in that old photo compared to how he's rotting is really bittersweet. I'm sad but I love it.

1:58 "A guy like me" I hear a hint of self-hatred in John Casey's voice here. Or maybe self-contempt. He's no longer the fanatic from the start of S1, Sarah isn't the only one that Chuck has managed to help find her conscience. It's also interesting to see who realizes where John is going first. You can see Sarah realize it almost immediately, with Chuck just behind her (he's been there!), and maybe oddly, you can see Morgan reach that realization right behind Chuck. Morgan is many things, but he's _not_ stupid. But when John Casey is scared, then it's time to be scared.

Each character had so much growth. Chuck became a Man/Spy, Sarah found love and family, Casey realised that he is his own person, not just some tool made to kill.

Omg I'm rewatching the show and completely forgot this Plottwist! I was amazed by the crazy storytelling! Incredible! And they can't do nothing about it? Still watching so no spoilers haha!

@Traindom I was mostly chocked! But now I think as you do. I'm sad but it was still awesome. I think Chuck and Ellie are going to cure him though.

@zattacks Wow! That is one interesting idea you've got there! Everything fits! And to add; Graham hasn't been in the show since he "died" in season 2. So it would be a major surprise if he suddenly showed up again. You would never see it comming!Except now we do... =P

I love how this show just assumes from the first that every intelligence agency and special operations unit is evil. They found out the truth about Agent X, now they fear their own country.

Not their own country _per se_ , but corrupt officials within it, and fanatical/naive personnel who carry out their orders. We see from the start of the show that something is Seriously Wrong at the top of the CIA and its related organizations. Sarah and John used to fall into the 'fanatic pawns' category, too, before Chuck taught them better. I don't think Beckman is as bad as Graham, she at least seems to be willing to _try_ to avoid needless killing, I don't think Graham cares. Chuck doesn't work for the good guys, and I think he realizes it. More like he works for the 'least bad guys'. Jill certainly warned him and her warning has been extensively confirmed.

George Orwell pointed out a long time ago that organizations can do horrors that individuals will shrink from, because individuals have consciences, organizations are more like soulless organisms that serve their own interest. Secrecy is inescapably necessary in intelligence work, but secrecy also breeds corruption. There are surely trustworthy individuals in the organizations in Chuck's word, but the sociopaths are there too, and they have a lot of freedom to act when the lights are out. They can hide behind patriotism or national security, because real patriotism and real national security need secrecy too.
