Totally awesome! I met Chuck Berry after a show in St. Louis a few years ago (he always hangs out and talks to people afterwards). When I shook his hand I was totally in awe, and told him, "I'm shaking the hand of the man who started rock and roll". He goes, "and I'm shaking the hand of one of the guys that's gonna keep it going". How cool is that :)

Nah Chuck didn't have a clue what's going on. He thought it was a live take for the documentary. He tries to play in different keys, he mimics the other musicians and feigns respect for Johnnie Johnson. The guy's a prick. Watch the DVD versions with 2 and 4 extra hours footage. He almost ruined the concert by ruining his voice. There's Nothing nice about him but I love his guitar work.

@@grimmertwin2148 You got that right. I was at the show at the fox theater in St. Louis ( and it was being filmed by Taylor Hackford ( Director of ' An Officer and a Gentleman " ) and Chuck Berry was a total egotistical jerk....doing things his way and constantly changing things....people on stage and off were getting upset at his antics....I heard Keith who had done all the planning shouting at Chuck Berry repeatedly...even pleading for Chuck to take it seriously ' this is for prosperity man ! ' when Chuck would shout' it's MY birthday' and then do something crazy and disrupting everybody else's rhythm......it was actually a bad concert cause almost every song was stopped and redone.

The camera doesn’t realize that Eric and Keith aren’t the only stars on the stage. It takes the camera almost 6 minutes to get a shot of Johnnie Johnson, the greatest rock and roll piano player ever, who literally carries the whole session. Funny thing though all due respect to Chuck Berry, whenever he was jamming like in this session he would always add extra notes to his guitar licks. and add other embellishments to his music. not that anything is wrong with that a lot of musicians do that. it just made him a little unpredictable to work with. Keith Richards even mentioned it in an interview. he said that he was almost as hard to work with as Mick Jagger. but he still liked him a lot. that's part of what made Chuck Berry so incredible was that he was always trying to improve himself.

This brings back memories from a teenager seeing Chuck Berry playing the Orange County Fair. I’m guessing it was around 1972 ? The tickets were a buck if I remember correctly, but the amazing thing was that all these country kids were to busy playing Carnival games. And he was a Legend playing a full two hours, doing all the hits, in front of approximately 100 people. I think it was 1975 when the Rolling Stones played Madison Square Garden for six nights, and it was with the Lotus Stage. I was able to get tickets for all six performances. It was the first time the Stones did Sympathy for the Devil since the whole thing at Altamont Speedway. I forget the order but Eric Clapton played lead for either the first or last night. Carlos Santana also played lead for either the first or last show. Billy Preston had a big hit at the time and performed it at each night. Thanks for a great jam !!!

@@buckwild6759 It's kinda disappointing...I don't claim to be a great guitarist but I have to been playing Johnny B Goode since 1976, based on the original recording...got to be a bit boring so I have gradually embellished it. I have only just recently looked at Berry's live stuff and....WTF! I would be too ashamed to play if I was that bad. He always seems to have another guitarist playing the "signature" licks and relies on the pianist a lot. Clapton and Richards have to be thinking "this guy sucks but he's a legend so it'll be cool to be seen with him"

I saw Chuck a long time ago in London in his early days. It’s not about how well he played, but what he plays. He created a style of music that wasn’t heard of before, that was the key. Sure there are hundreds of better guitarists out there now, but most have used his licks and style to bite their teeth on.

There’s nothing quite like finding a groove and jammin ‘til you practically fall over. This is hot. A group of some of Rock and Roll’s best just jamming away. Eric, one of my favorites of all time, doesn’t really seem to be into it but the energy EVERYONE ELSE is putting out is phenomenal!!!

Where does that leave Carl Perkins? He wrote and released Blue Suede Shoes (1955); obviously before Elvis and the same year Berry released Maybelline. Berry's next hit was Roll Over Beethoven in '56 and he didn't release "Rock and Roll Music" till '57. Anybody before Carl? Anybody? ......... Bueller, Bueller... Smoot-Hawley! Johnnie Johnson flipping phenom I so love his sound. Last time I saw him was at Mississippi nights on the river in across from East Saint Louis. Crazy long history after playing and writing for chuck he ended up driving a school bus for years until the special for Chuck then he joined Rat Dog with Bob Weir and played Dead songs with his style having JC on stage at the same time playing b3 was sweet. Drink of Tanquray and of course a traditional encore for Bob Jhonny b Good he passed away shortly after. About a year or so after I traveled back to Saint Louis to the river and Bob Weir conjured the spirit of Johnnie Johnson It was as though you could feel his presence in a New Orleans type of send off. Johnnie Johnson playing with Clapton, Richards and Berry must have been a spectacular minute. Oh yea Chuck and Johnnie remained friends after Johnnie's care takers (years of blues had taken a tole on his body and mind) convinced him to sue Chuck for the song rights to the songs he wrote. Both of them were indifferent and didn't let the case destroy their relationship.

as I set turned on my pa system and hooked up my tablet, I prepared to perfect some new backing tracks I made. I turned on my twin reverb, tuned up the strat and jammed for a few hours to "Johnny b goode", "rock and roll music" and "roll over Beethoven". it was a normal practice to some great rock classics and I thought nothing of it. then when I got a text from a musically uneducated friend that read "someone called chuck berry has died u might know him idk" I ceased and started thinking of what I was doing earlier on that day... I like the thought and the idea that i was remembering him and paying tribute to him myself just before he died... the true father of rock and roll. RIP
