Growing up as a poor rural white kid, I was completely insulated from the plight of black people, the was one black family in my home town. In '91 I purchased a Public Enemy tape, which influenced me into paying attention, to reading the words of the great social leaders (militant and not), which basicallyled to my learning about all that I had been ignorant to up till then. This has been a lifetime passion for me. I was in fifth grade then, now that I'm a grown man, I teach my children to be socially aware, I teach them as best I can what it means, in my understanding, to come from a different ethnicity than they do. While I'll never truly know what it means to be anything but white, I am as informed as possible, and i make damn sure my kids are too, that they know the true history of oppression in all its forms, which all started because of the lyrics of Chuck D.... his albums may or may not have been written for poor white kids, but they reached me none the less. He is a powerful, eloquent, active, and confident man that is an inspiration to all races.

I'm 49 and to this day Chuck D is my HERO! From 1987 with YBRTS I was a PE fan. Chuck taught me more about my People than school ever did! I can remember summer vacation of 89. All my homeboys headed to the park to have cookouts and play ball on a Saturday. I'm like I'll fall thru later. On my way to the library to look up names that Chuck has dropped on It Takes A Nation... Chesimard, Farrakhan, Vesey, Prosser, etc. At 17 I didn't know who these heroes were and I was ashamed of that fact. I am a PROUD BLACK NATIONALIST thanks to Chuck and the rest of PE lighting that quest for KNOWLEDGE.
