The people need to know the platforms of all candidates to make informed decisions - it's basic democracy. Having an uneducated, uninformed electorate damages democracy. If a candidate is a "waste of space" the voters need access to information (including debates) to draw their own conclusions.

A debate won't work unless there are rules and consequences. You interrupt, first offense opponent gets 30 extra seconds on that answer (and your mic is cut whenever it is not your turn). 2nd offense: They get 30 extra seconds and you lose 30 seconds on your next turn. 3rd offense: opponent gets 30 extra seconds and you get the cattle prod.
