Hey everyone! I wanted to do an update on Chuckles and hopefully explain to the concerned public out there. I've been working at TreeHouse for almost three years now and Chuckles is very much loved at our center! We've moved over to Dow, IL and had enough funds to build Chuckles and her Gray Fox friend, Zorro, a much larger enclosure with two large hollow logs, den boxes, ramps, and platforms. We're very thankful to all of the donations we receive to help us better the lives of the animals that are in our care. I can assure you that the behavior in this video is of her which she gets excited. She especially gets excited when we bring a bucket of food to her! She'll even come running from the other side of her enclosure wagging her tail, chuckling, and rolling around. She will take treats from our hands if we sit down and hold them out to her. Of course some of those behaviors are not normal and are due to her neuro issues she received when she was attacked by a dog as a kit. I do want to make a point though to say that she is still a wild red fox. We do not pet her because it is her rule! She has a personal bubble and prefers that we do not try to touch her. She would rather approach or greet us on her own terms and we respect that. This goes for most animals in our care since they all have come from the wild. All of our permanent residents play a role at our center and hers is to help young foxes that come to our center injured or orphaned. When they are weaned, she raises them the rest of the way and is a very caring foster mother.

The platypus is a poisonous mammal that lays eggs and looks like half beaver and half duck. The echidna is a poisonous mammal that looks like part porcupine and part hedgehog. The large Fossa of Madagascar looks like a small cougar but actually belongs to the weasel family with wolverine I think. Not to mention there are also poisonous types of birds out there. The world is truly an interesting place, and we learn something new each day.

I love the point of society we are in where domestic dogs and cats are fine but people refuse to allow the domestication of any other animal. If you raise something from birth under your care, it no longer "belongs" in the wild. There are a lot more animals beyond dogs that can provide companionship and loyalty for humans while offering different sets of skills. So please, so long as the animal is not endangered and is properly cared for, can we just let people live their lives.

I agree with you. I too believe that any animal taken from babyhood can be domesticated. I think it's just that a lot of people have very strict ideas about which animals are pet material, since they've never seen anyone have any other and can't fathom the possibility. It makes them uncomfortable, and scared, or weirded out. They obey to their "fight or flight" response instincts and fight the idea of a different kind of pet then what they are used to, either with anger, or contempt, or disgust.

tall32guy The impulse is very strong, but I don't know if I would have tried to touch the fox in such sensitive places. A tail wagging is not automatically a sign of friendliness. It can be a sign of nervousness, especially considering it was laying flat on the ground and looking anywhere but at the eyes of the camera holder. To me this behaviour says it's trying to defuse a tense situation by acting meek and non-threatening. A sign of submission, sure, but that wouldn't mean the fox would be okay with having his most fragile areas touched.

I think this fox and many other foxes ive seen on here are adorable, it's sad that she has brain damage, but hell she is one happy fox, and yea she doesn't know how to hunt because she was injured, if she wasn't then she wouldn't be here, but atleast there are LOVING PEOPLE out there who actually give a dam instead of wishing the poor thing dead, hell if I had a fox as a pet id be happy as hell, they are the cutest things. people need to realize every animal deserves to live, and every hurt or sick animal needs help, I can see if she was hurt and they were helping her heal then help her out in the wild but she is damaged beyond repair, and only love and happiness is what she needs now. so before hating an animal, understand where it's coming from before wishing it dead.

Update on Chuckles: Chuckles is seventeen now and is going to be put down this week. She has lived a long life, but she is deaf and losing all of her fur and ready to go.

Just visited Treehouse for the first time and saw Chuckles where we were told about the KZbin videos. They said they've gotten emails from China and elsewhere asking after Chuckles' health and all. (It's a chilly day so he was huddled up on the ground watching us.) As others have noted before, Chuckles has neurological damage which is debilitating and has a weird human-like chuckle. Chuckles, a bobcat in a neighboring pen, possums, and other rescued animals, including a bunch of American bald eagles which cannot be released in to the wild, are lovingly cared for and visited by many. Those that can be released back into the wild, are. I didn't ask but I'm sure that's what they do with the fox kits that Chuckles is encouraged to adopt. We plan on getting a membership as well as visiting again.

Don Baxley Foxes are wild animals. Infact, they are more like cats in their behavours even though they resemble dogs. They don't have the benefit of thousands of years of domestication like other house hold pets so despite being tame, they can be skiddish, it just depends on the fox. They are quite destructive, which is why fox owners build purpose built pens for them to live in, rather than keep them in their home.

Look, obviously this animal loves the handler and is ecstatic to see her/him. I have a dachshund that acts the exact same way when I am around (he is brain damaged due to his past owner) , and there is no way that he hates me or he would have run out sometime ago when I accidentally left the gate unlatched. Foxes are a lot like dogs. Imagine that fox as a corgi or other small dog, would you have the same reaction or would you say something along the lines of "he just wants a belly rub." "Look at the way he's wagging his tail, he's happy!" "Oh what a cute dog!". The bottom line is that the fox is happy to see its owner, just like a dog would be.

I got to see this fox and learn her story. As a young fox she was shaken by a dog and suffered severe injures. She has recovered but still has unusual behaviors that indicate permanent neurological injuries which include an amusing "laugh"
