How are these chuck wagons? There is zero weight of food and provisions on board. The completion should have rules on minimum wheel size and weight carried and minimum sizes for the wagons so they resemble the originals.

Our sport started as a bunch of friends racing teams hooked to ride wagons. It evolved into separate divisions. "Rubber tire" wagons came from racers painting to be lower to the ground (lower chance of the wagon rolling over), and the competitive spirit of wanting to go faster. Our Buckboard division has a minimum weight limit of 500 pounds and stock restriction of 52 inches in height. The Classic division is the traditional style of freight/farm wagon with the exception of the chuck box. Each wagon weights a minimum of 1000 pounds, and is generally pulled by thoroughbred teams. Each Classic must have a tool box, water barrel, lantern, and a skillet attached to the wagon. Wooden wagons can not have bearings within the hubs, and must have original style running gear. To race a fully loaded wagon would be more dangerous not only for us in the wagon, but ultimately would be incredibly dangerous for the stock pulling the wagon.

These chuckwagons aren’t much more than chariots. The only difference is these have an additional roof and coverings. Also these have only two horses and chuckwagons generally have 4.

The rubber tire wagons take after the classic with the tarp as a means of knowing which team is which. Not only for those watching the race, but for timers marking down which teams time around the track. Think of it as going to say a dirt or paved oval car race. There are different types of cars for different divisions or classes. Say you go to a local dirt track on a Saturday night. You'll see hobby stock, street stock, open wheel modifieds, IMCA modifieds, wingless and winged sprint cars. We run 46" mules and ponies on the rubber tire, 52" mules and ponies, big mules and big horse which is usually thoroughbred horses. In Buckboard, we run 52" ponies, Classic we generally run thoroughbreds, and in Landrush or "mini classic" we run 46" ponies and every now and then there will be a 46" mule team pulling the wagon.

This is seen by many as just A total waste of animals energy. TOTALLY for mans amusement @ the animals expense. Has little to do with truly teaching animals to work. Only a but short of abuse. Maybe!!!

WRONG!!!! Our stock loves what they do! Just like you have a job to do in your day to day life, the animals have a job to do. And they LOVE it. It's not like someone goes, grabs a couple of ponies or mules and forces them to a wagon. If we cant find a connection with said animal and work together, we will sell that animal to a friend and even to our own competition where they may work just fine with each other. We take a stupid amount of time to find even 1 pony, horse, or mule that enjoys working to the wagon. Do that again. Then you do that again to find 2 that will not only get along with each other, but a team that will work well with each other. And not ever animal will work the same for each individual person. Again, it's like an employer finding a group of people that will work together, but work together well and accomplish a goal set before you. And another thing that I can promise you. These animals get taken care of better than a lot of people take care of their own kids. Not saying there aren't some bad apples in the bunch. Because there are in ever single aspect of life. But for 98-99% of the racers, our stock is taken care of WAY before we put any thought into our own well being.
