It is way easier to find the build sticker in the truck. It is inside the glove box most of the time and will have gear ratio printed there.

I do like the 16 in 92 rs wheels but the corvette and camaro rally wheels looks very veery nice on a chevy s10 with nice trim rings and center caps. I own a 1982 chevy s10 350-350 swap and 15x8 rallys on the rear 15x7 rallys on the front i really like the look. Also have a set of rally wheels on my 78 malibu. All your wheels are good choices

By the way, many of the s trucks came with a factory spiro-locke differential. Only locker available stock. And does NOT spin both tires in reverse. Only when power applied going forward. Gets you stuck most every time.

I would go with a 3.42:1 if performance is more important than gas mileage. It is an all around good choice. I had a 2.73:1 in first car and it did good, especially for gas mileage and the way gas prices are going... Thanks for watching and good luck. Are you doing any video on it?

Thank you very much! Found your video right on time. Going to change my gasket tomorrow because of a leak. When I had mentioned it to my dad (lives in different state), he told me to go ask someone to show me how to find out what my gear ratio is. I thought Oh great, I got too many things to do on my truck that needs attention, everyone else is busy too, but I gotta make time to please Dad and figure out the ratio. Didn't realize how easy it is until your video, lol! And now I'm really glad my dad asked because this would be the perfect time to check the exact ratio. I don't know what it'll tell me but I guess my dad will give me a lesson when I tell him what mine is. Btw, what color did you end up going with?
@chud3276 жыл бұрын
It is soooo easy and I am so glad it helped you. Thanks for watching. Let me know what you find out.
@bandita4456 жыл бұрын
I'm embarrassed to admit, I had a really hard time with the differential and got myself in a pickle. My plan was to torque the bolts on the cover to 20 ft lbs, starting off lower. As I tried torquing to 10, several of my bolts broke and now I guess I have to drill them out. I picked up some Grade 8 and 5 bolts (because store didn't have enough of the 8's). I don't know what grade my original bolts that broke are because there's no markings on the top (just has a #3 printed on top). The grade 5's I picked up, I don't even think they're heat resistant. Will these suffice as temp use until I can find the right bolts, or do I need to replace the gasket again once I remove the temp bolts? I presume I'll get a small leak once I remove any bolts, so not sure if that would compromise the new gasket I just put in. As far as the gear ratio goes, no ratio markings inside :( Got some numbers but don't look like ratios. I'll send a pic if I can figure out how. I counted about 1/2 way for each of the gears, 24 and 8, so I guess 3.0 would be a rough estimate. In the back gears (the one with about 16 teeth), had a small etching that looked like 2.756. Not sure if that represents the ratio.
@chud3276 жыл бұрын
I would love to see the pictures and the bolts shouldn't need to be heat resistant, rear end shouldn't be getting hot. You could use a new gasket or some silicone sealant. The number on the gears should tell the story. If the big gear would be about 24X2 which would be 48 and the little on the back is 16, then 48/16 = about 3.0. I wish you knew the exact number of teeth on each...
@bandita4456 жыл бұрын
Good to know that heat resistant bolts not needed, thanks. So I guess as long as there won't be any leaks, I won't need to replace them. That will save a lot of time. I wish I was able to count all the gears too. Wasn't able to get them to rotate and the small one in the back is waaay back (hard to reach). I don't know why my truck always seems to be more complicated then the videos I watch on how to do things, lol! Not sure if there's a way to upload pics here in comments:(. Btw, Happy Easter!

How is the best way to make sure that I ordered the right driveshaft? there are so many different ones. Or howd Do you measure for wheelbase
@chud327 Жыл бұрын
I measure from the universal flange to universal joint flange, then I usually go to the junk yard and try to find one that is the right length. Only thing is they move the vehicles at the junk yard with a front end loader and most driveshafts are damaged, but if you look long enough, i can find one not damaged and the right length. We also have a drive shaft shop that will build anything you need. You can take one from the junkyard and they will shorten it for you. The junkyard only charges about $18 if you can find one that works. If you tell the drive shaft shop what vehicle and what transmission you have, the guy might already know which one will work. Hope this helps and if you watch my latest S-10 build for about last October, I walk you through how I find my driveshaft. Good luck and thanks for watching.

I am actually going to buy a little square body S-10 tomorrow. It is really clean, factory black. It has the little 2.8 with 5 speed but it's a very nice starting point. I'm going to throw a set of old school Centerline's, and I have a SB 406. I'm trying to find the easiest route for a Posi-Trac...any ideas?
@chud3279 жыл бұрын
+PantyPirate I would suggest keeping a close eye on Craigslist, but that may take too long. You might just have to buy you a little locker and put it in yourself. Are you going to make us some video?
@Redeemed4279 жыл бұрын
+chud327 You know, I never thought about a video. I think that's a good idea, like I said it looks good but a video on each $$$ step lets other people judge what they may want to do first, or wait till 3 or 4 steps into it. I know I'll make a walk around and under the hood, and inside so I can see progress. I'm on a budget though, so it'll take a bit, all nice things do. I forgot to mention on your S-10, I liked the way you used the VW gas tank, Hea if you got the bed off one, start making in nice and custom, clean it all up and paint it. Git er done. I never thought of buying a little locker, I'll have to check into it, but again, if I got it apart I'm going to change Rings and Pinion, it's going to be a toy, something to drive and cruise in, gotta be dependable. Thanks, if I get to bring it home tomorrow I'll post a quick video for all. We are still a couple hundred off on the price, but I don't see it as a deal breaker, thanks Chud327.

I'm confused. You jacked up both rear wheels, then immobilized one of the wheels. Why not just jack up one rear wheel so that you would not have to jam a hammer beneath the wheel on the opposite side? It would have the same effect, right, or did I miss something here?
@chud3277 жыл бұрын

@chud3279 жыл бұрын
Henry Deloatch I would think that you could put a locker in the stock rear like mine had and it should be fine. Unless you are going to put some be sticky slicks back there, the back end is so light that it should spin before something breaks. Mine never gave me any problems, but I didn't have slicks either.

turn the wheel twice the driveshaft should turn basically 3 and 3/4 turns or 3.73 times
@chud3277 жыл бұрын
That is a good and quick way to estimate what you have. Thanks for watching.
@RalphSampson...6 жыл бұрын
Why not just look at the tag? That one likely has GT4 stamped on it, which is a 3.73. I get it. Just in case the tag is missing, you can use this method. But, still, he could have said, "If this tag is missing......".

Does this method work even if you have aftermarket rims and tires(Larger ones). Please help.
@chud3279 жыл бұрын
Mark Ramirez yes, the tires size is irrelevant. It will work just the same with smaller or bigger tires. Hope this helps, what size tires do you have? Thanks for watching.

Great! my 75 c-10 has a low rear end,(an old farm truck) I need a gear for freeway driving. I need a ratio for a higher gear! Any ideas?
@chud3279 жыл бұрын
+David Chambers It depends on what your truck already has. My first car, 1969 Camaro, came with a 2.73. It was really high which is good for top speeds and gas mileage. In my S-10, I went with the 3.42. I never got to drive it on the highway before I sold it, but I think I was going to like it. I would look around for a good deal on something higher, try it and see if I like it. thanks for watching and for the question.

cool just hit me up any time what i have is 88 s10 tahoe with only 2200 miles on its like new really lol has a 4.3 in it with automatic trans and would like to get it set up for a v8 or maybe buy one thats already done and strip it or may even just trade this one but from all i have read dont think it will be too hard being it has a 4.3 already but i have been following u and your close to me so figured u may could be some help in pointing me in right direction... thanks will
@chud3279 жыл бұрын
+William Wimberly Yea that sounds cool. As for yours, the v8 would bolt right to your transmission. Everything behind the trans can stay just like it is, unless you start making too much power. Motor mount will be on of the biggest things that you will need. Or like you said, some one might be wait to trade you. My first V8 s10 came with the v8 already in it. My neighbor did all the hard work and got tired of messing with it. He bought my full size truck and pretty much gave me his S-10. I then drove the wheels almost off of it. That is when my addiction began. I have had about 14 S10's over the years, or at least that is how many I can remember. I should do a video one day and show all the pictures of my S-10 pickups and Blazers. Some people would get into that... Good luck and keep me updated.

What this video and many others on this topic fail to clarify why there is a multiplication by 2? On some You Tube vids there is no multiplication. Another thing that vids do not clarify well is what type of carrier an axle under analysis is. Open/standard diff, locker diff, etc type.
@chud3275 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that, this one was a locked rear to start with. That is why one tire had to be blocked. Since only one tire spins, the tires spins twice as much, therefore you need to divide by two. If you have a spool, you could jack up both sides and not divide. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Hey what is that rear end out of? im doing a v8 swap to my 88 s10, what do you think are good options for a locking rear end?
@chud3278 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, the rear end came out of an S-10. Some one had added the locker to it. I had a neighbor put a posi chunk out of a Camaro into his S-10 rear end. It worked great. Good luck and I want to see a video of it when you are all done. Thanks for watching,

Is your gear ratio gonna be different if you have positive reaction ?
@chud3278 жыл бұрын
No, the gear ratio stays the same with positive traction. I would actual change if you didn't have a locker, the spinning tire would spin twice as fast. Thanks for watching and for the question.

Can't get a grip on why there's the "multiply by 2". ???
@chud3275 жыл бұрын
You only have one tires spinning so that will spin the drive shaft twice as fast as if both tires were spinning. So if you do the math and it says you have a 1.865 you would double that and get a 3.73. If you rear has a spool which keeps both wheels locked together, they would spin exactly the same amount of times. You would not block one wheel and you would skip the multiple by 2 part. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.
