Emile mentioned that Wario beat Mario to having his own planet. And yes, in terms of games release dates that's true. However if you want to think of it in the (theoretical, mind you) Mario timeline, the Wario Land games actually take place at the very very VERY end of the (theoretical) timeline, so in a (theoretical) timeline sense, Mario WAS the first to do it.
