Kersti's dialogue when she was in that web should have been the start of a character arc about her treating Mario better, thinking he intentionally left her behind because of how she mistreated him and when he comes back for her she takes it as a second chance to make up for her past mistakes. It's not instant, she starts nagging at him once and catches her mistake, but she goes from being a bitch to just being sassy.
@youtube-kit9450 Жыл бұрын
I deadass thought it was supposed to be that way. She is snarky, an asshole and so on at the beginning like usual, but the longer she's left alone, the more she also talks about the immense pressure she's under and how she feels terrible, which could've been very easy to convert into a character arc of her becoming nicer to Mario, being more open, and more openly helpful.

Just how Sticker Star uses consumable attacks, Partners in Time uses Bros. Items, meaning that you effectively need to grind for lots of coins to possibly do lots of damage. But at least there's the Jump and Hammer commands which are infinite, and the game seems to do a good job at handing you Bros. Items in some areas of the game anyways. Someone once also made a complaint about Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time recycling some puzzles from Superstar Saga, and another could complain of how this game doesn't seem to handle time travel correctly like Chrono Trigger. You even get a nice remix of the mario theme and three whole turns where Gooper Blooper misses all of his attacks AND takes poison damage! does it make up for chapter 3? No. Not at all. I remember hearing a lot of people say Olivia in Origami King was a bad character but here's the thing. Olivia had personality, Olivia reacted to events in a very real way, Olivia played off the other characters had some pretty funny and strong moments with them, and Olivia actually helps you with useful hints throughout the game and doesn't constantly complain that you didn't do things the "correct way". To me, aside from the fact we needed a reason to explain how Mario could stick stickers to the world to solve puzzles, you could cut Kersti out and there would be zero difference in the writing and actually may have made the game more enjoyable.
@FoxVidz2000 Жыл бұрын
I liked Olivia. I liked Huey, Tippi, and the other past partners in the OG Trilogy a little better......if not equally. But still, I thought she was charming, cute, helpful in many circumstances whenever you're stuck, and even has a few different talents she finds for herself on her journey with Mario to stop her racist brother. No idea what the hate is about, honestly. OK is awesome, even without EXP. I just wish that the ring battle system was strictly just for bosses bc I think that's the only time it actually works. But even then, it's not intolerable. CS is right alongside it, if not a little bit above or below it bc it actually has its own EXP and the only problem I have with it is filling out the museum bc Enemy Cards are STUPID RARE or I'm unlucky bc I'm me. Paper Jam is an actual RPG. Not really any new characters but the game is fun, challenging in some points, funny, boss fights are mostly creative and well-designed, music's fantastic as always, and we got the confirmation of just what the Paper Mario world is and that it's technically a part of the normal Mario world. This montrosity sucks ass. Best to call it non-canon and move on bc nothing really happens. The OG Trilogy is forever timeless. TTYD and Super have a few flaws that are a PAIN but nothing to hate the whole experience over. And there you have it, Chugga-fans! You got this Fox's take on PM. Nice to meet you.

I think Charriii5 summed up my feelings for World 3 better than I ever could. "Gooper... Blooper... This was it. This was the moment I realized I hated this game. Megasparkle Goomba was okay. It was challenging, but it felt like a natural progression of the combat system we had been taught up to that point. There are Things that make the fight a lot easier, but they're not essential to the fight. Tower Power Pokey was a lot more annoying. You're not told the Bat will make things easier until you already lose to him before. But even though it's super challenging, you can beat him without the Bat, you don't need it. Now you can't, and I cannot stress this enough, CANNOT beat Gooper Blooper without the Sponge Thing, which is really easy to miss in World 3-9 because it's covered in poison and blends in with the background. If you do not have the Sponge Thing, you will get Poisoned and be lucky to EVER hit the boss in edition to losing HP every turn! The ONLY way I can see someone maybe beating this without the Sponge is use Leaf Stickers to perfectly block the poison he shoots at you, but there's a catch. The Sponge not only protects you from the poison, but spits it back at the boss which is what the boss is weak to! F*ck ANY strategy you might have had because there is a clear answer to this fight and is the way the devs want you to beat it. You could say it's not that big a deal, but this sh*t piles up! It's not isolated incidents that teach me to be prepared. I never know what I'm going to need coming into a level or boss battle. This game has a system where it has no rules and yet somehow manages to break them anyway! I hate this game, man..."

You can cancel out Gooper Blooper's poison attack if you crumple him with a pow block on the turn before said attack. It's easier to do with the more powerful variants of course. If you consistently pull this off, then it's not that hard to beat him without the sponge. Of course, you'd have to know that before going into battle, so... yeah.

Oh. OH. I have something to tell about the two required invisible coin blocks in 3-5. I was stuck there for over a WEEK because I couldn't find them. I spent multiple hours *per day* double-checking every nook and cranny, paperized every milimeter and. I vividly remember literally screaming at the screen and begged for forgiveness (I was young, okay?) before finally finding them when randomly jumping at the wall trying to sequence break. I was absolutely gobsmacked. Sure, there have been required secrets before, but there usually were at least some hints to them. These two blocks? Nothing. The only thing remotely hinting at their existence is the little stop the leaf takes when passing by. Which can be easily put aside as just a neat detail. And I was *furious*. I put the DS aside and just took a rest. A long rest. A rest of little less than a month, because I just couldn't believe it. The funny thing is that I was so taken away, I forgot to charge my 3DS... and the battery died on me. So I had to replay the level. Normally just a minor inconvenience, but it absolutely drained me. I finished the rest of the game without much issues, but this level will forever haunt me. And to this day I am just seething with rage when seeing this level. Edit: Oh, I forgot to add this: It actually gets even worse. AFTER you beat the world and come back with the poison drained, there is a flower underneath the blocks, hinting at their existence. The sheer audacity to hide the indicator until you beat the world just baffles me. "Oops, tee hee, look what we left there! Did you need this four hours ago and now feel stupid? Aww, too bad, maybe try harder next time!" Leave it to 3-5 to pump my blood pressure through the roof in whatever way possible...

In regards to 33:28 - playing through Bowser's Inside Story as my first big RPG and then finding the Elite Trio battle in Dream Team was downright _mindblowing_ for me as a kid. The fact that the battle's mechanics had so much flair and cool mechanics to them (like knocking Paraplonk into the line of reinforcements at the back and seeing a *whole line* of damage numbers pop up, or the fact that you had to down *all three of the Trio* at once to win the battle) made that genuinely one of my favourite fights in the series, to the point where I saved Save Slot 3 permanently to the block before the fight. And on the subject of "not making unique Toads" anymore, one of my favourite things about Bowser's Inside Story was seeing the different NPC designs around; case in point, the amnesiac adventurer Toad in the clinic that gives you hints to the other Ability Puzzle Pieces! For them to say "it's not worth the effort" just reads to me that you're not putting _enough_ effort in, and I got really disappointed in that.
@natecgames4612 Жыл бұрын
Kersti is genuinely the worst p.m. helper out of all the games that came before her because for every flaw the other main "helpers" had, they had personality and reason to back up their actions. Goombario is a nice kid who's way in over his head sometimes who thinks he could handle an adventure with Mario which he pulls himself all the way through for. Goombella is a very sassy tomboy who is generally rude sometimes but that's only when she feels she's being mistreated by strangers and though not interacting much with everyone else shows that she holds her soft side for her companions as she goes along. Tippy is distant to you at first but has the most fleshed out story to a partner in the game and runner-up to bombery in the whole series as it takes 8 worlds to get so used to her presence that it feels genuinely heart breaking when not only she needs to leave but a former villian gives you a robotic version of her that refuses to believe it's not her. Hell even HUEY is more likeable because his character is put to a more comedic and jab in your side type of character of Kersti archetype, but even he knows when to give you general hints (sometimes like Kersti, not good enough hints) and only gets mad at Mario specifically rightfully because Mario whacks him on the head with a hammer the first time they meet, even though the game requires it. I haven't played o.k. but you can't make anything more unlikable and unhelpful then Kersti if you tried, cementing the fact that this game is the greatest game you can make with its core concepts. It's just those concepts are extremely flawed and always doubled down on.
@natecgames4612 Жыл бұрын
Also you didn't cover that in chapters 2 and 3 at least, after you already are committed to fighting the boss normally Kersti will give you a major hint as to how to beat the boss. But because in the first few turns blooper shoots ink at you that means that if you didn't get the sponge or the HP sponge pun well enough then you only get a hint at having a CHANCE to beat the boss after you've already fundamentally lost. It's such ass and at that point why make a helper character if you could just have the hindsight that's developed in three year olds

Something important worth noting. You will not actually get all of your regular stickers back. In the scuttle bug level, you will get your most important stickers back and that's pretty much it. Aside from specific ones here or there and ones that you are likely to remember from your inventory, the game doesn't actually give you your exact stickers back. instead it usually ends up giving you far worse options or far less stickers in return. This can be tested by entering the level with A LOT of really good stickers and will result in getting not getting them all back. Some of them you will never see again. What's that you were saving up those cool stickers or you just went to the shop to buy a bunch of good ones aw sorry most of them are gone now. I would say that one of my main issue with all of the new Paper Mario games is that they took the name too seriously. They decided that the meaning of the Paper in Paper Mario is that everything in the world is paper, and thus must be related to paper, be it stickers, paint, or origami. The previous 3 games almost never mentioned the whole paper gimmick (save TTYD using the folding transformations) because the Paper in Paper Mario was meant as an artistic choice to them, not the concept of the entire game. With this grand misunderstanding of that one word, they turned the Paper of a grand storybook into just some paper used for a kindergartener's arts and crafts project.

It's honestly disheartening to find out that Miyamoto didn't actually force the team to restrict their creativity, he just *suggested* they use mainly classic unchanged characters and didn't actually get involved with the production almost at all, and Tanabe's response was to cut out all interesting characters and storytelling to make something so thoughtlessly basic, in a series previously praised for good storytelling and lovable cast. All of the decisions that led to Sticker Star being what it is astound me. It didn't have to be like this... It's hard to believe it's made by any of the same people, with the first three games having so much care put into their writing, characters, gameplay mechanics, etc, and Sticker Star having Kersti (the only one who can even be confidently called a character) be extremely unlikable and *completely useless*, the sticker mechanic so poorly executed that it's genuinely irritating to use, so poorly paced it makes you replay sections multiple times, the one thing in the game with much care put into it is very easily missable... after finally getting a chance to watch the Mario movie, I have to say that it's flat out insulting how the movie was not only allowed to create new characters, but also play around with pre-existing characters, and have a pretty interesting story, while the rpg series isn't allowed to do any of that

I feel like that would be excusable if the main story didn't make you do so many repeat visits already. Many rpgs have extra goodies in old areas if you return to them later. Too bad this game makes you never want to see a swampy forest ever again in your life due to how it's "structured"

The longer this series goes on the more awestruck I am at how committed the design team seemed to be at irritating the player constantly. At least it gives Chugga plenty of good material to riff on. And I can't say I was expecting to see Omori get referents, but am very happy that it was.

Putting a damage pool underneath a healing station is an obvious sign of developers having resentment for their players or the project they're working on. There’s a giant difference between simplicity and not trying. Sticker Star is a pretty good example of the latter, regarding characters, enemies, and story.
@bluebow5014 Жыл бұрын
Something that I only recently caught on rewatch of Jon’s SS streams-Wiggler somehow knows Mario’s name without either him or Kersti having properly introduced This isn’t the first time this has happened, writing errors like this can slip through the cracks all the time, especially when it comes to characters knowing each other or not. Hell, there’s a random flower guard in Paper Mario that knows Mario’s name without prior introduction too. The difference? The writing and characterization up to that point in Paper Mario is so on point that it could easily be explained by other elements in-universe, say perhaps the Wise Wisterwood notifying the guards of Mario’s presence and that they should be a little more inclined to help. Nothing exists to help Wiggler’s character in the same way-in fact, I have no clue how this infantalized caterpillar even manages to survive more than twenty minutes. How the hell does a giant worm like this have the ability to stave off predators like the snifits and poison bloopers from invading his treehouse that takes up WAY more real estate than any other food chain would normally allow? Where are his parents? The game goes out of its way to constantly infantilize Wiggler-characters can speak in third person and be competent and mature, but Wiggler is consistently called a kid by Kersti and referred to as having “grown up” by the end of Chapter 3. AND ANOTHER THING-how the hell did Wiggler have ANY character development at all by the end of this? I know Kersti is by far the least reliable in terms of offering game knowledge that’s actually true or helpful, but I’d expect one of the only consistent characters in the chapter to at least be referred to for what he is-a chore. It’d be one thing if the Wiggler segments had any indication of maturation since that’s the only exposure we have to Wiggler aside from the brief instances at the beginning, end, and segment delivery parts, but no! If anything, the segments become even MORE irritating to find as the chapter goes on, running off into a different level or world MORE often than the first segment did, and fighting you at EVERY opportunity when they’re cornered! Does that sound like a child growing up to you? It doesn’t help that the segments have no dialogue or distinctive features to attach to them to characterize them further or even denote that somehow Wiggler is conscious through these segments at all. They’re just annoying little side quests that have somehow graduated to being main story material without any of the proper paperwork. Wiggler’s “growth” feels very “tell, don’t show” as a result, and it’s only recently REALLY started to bug me. TL;DR-Wiggler isn’t engaging as a character to me at all, and I don’t feel like the journey he was supposed to go on as referred to by the game was telegraphed well in the slightest. I don’t get the hype.
@levidinn7500 Жыл бұрын
Having never played, I can't answer the question about the hype (though this video makes me suspect it's just because he's unique and has ANY character, and his torso parts maybe don't count against him) - but I think I can answer the question about knowing Mario's name. Long story short - he's famous. The Snifit or Whiffit host calls him the guy "we all detest" without proper introduction, it seems. However, this just makes the beginning all the more galling, with Kersti unable to recognize him as Mario.
@bluebow5014 Жыл бұрын
I mean Kersti is from a completely different planet, I’d sooner give her the benefit of the doubt there than Wiggler who even in the introduction gives no indication that he’s met Mario before or even knows him based on fame. I feel like Wiggler, given his childish disposition, would either fanboy over being visited by Mario or get angry on behalf of all the other Wigglers whose day Mario’s ruined
@krissjames7276 Жыл бұрын
