Generally agreed. While there are some people who go too far in adult topics family media should discuss (I.e. Mr. Enter saying that Turning Red should have focused on post-9-11 paranoia because it was set in 2002), the thing is, kids media, for the most part, sucks. What should be aimed to be made is family films, since they can appeal to everyone in a family watching, young or old. If something is pandering to a younger and/or older audience because its core audience has moved on from it, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. And generally, Sticker Star is a bad game with few saving graces (graphics and visuals, music, some good levels and a couple nice characters, Shy Guy). I might say that TTYD is ridiculously overrated or that Color Splash and Origami King are overhated, but Sticker Star is the PM game that near universally is just known as the worst of the bunch, and honestly, rightfully so. I actually was talking with a friend of mine this morning, and she summed it up best, Sticker Star is one of few games where she just actively wasn’t having any fun for the majority of it. At least with games like Superman 64 or Sonic 06 or FNaF: Security Breach, she had fun messing around with it because it’s so jank, but Sticker Star is for the most part, nothing, and its good parts are few and far between.

from emile's twitter Patch Notes for those who just want the new content: • 2:29 Some people challenged how I interpreted an interview at the start of Part 1. I included this perspective. • 44:10 Part 2's running away explanation was originally wrong. It's actually even worse than I thought it was. • 51:00 Lack of EXP image now credits the artist. This was a mistake caused by reverse-image searching and thinking a repost was the original. I'm sorry for that. • 1:34:31 Gooper Blooper crash was clarified. • 2:11:11 Moved from episode 6, the part about Cheap Chomp getting increased speed was added in the proper part. • 2:17:40 Part 5's fight with Petey Piranha has a new section about how poorly made the Infinijump Stickers are. • 2:42:35 Part 6 goes into the postgame more. I had not played it at the time of the original version and it was also even worse than I thought.😅

I then discovered the original Paper Mario, and it definitely feels a lot, lot better. I just realized: they do the sacrifice thing not only at the end of this game but also at the end of Color Splash and Origami King. Are they so afraid of making original characters that they have to make sure that any original characters they create die before the game is over? Lol.
@iantaakalla8180
@iantaakalla8180 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, yes. There was a mandate that supposedly mentioned that the Mario games cannot have characters not from the mainline Mario games appear. This also make Origami King super awkward because you have seven strong villains, Bobby, and Olivia, and yet all are dead by the game’s end. I do say seven strong villains despite the fact that they are all one-dimensional, but given that they have one personality trait, that makes them strong for Sticker Star-like standards.

The reason why I love characters like Midna and what they were going with for Kersti is that I love seeing them develop and bond with the main character. I love seeing their journey. The only time we see Kersti say anything nice to Mario outside of "good job for doing the thing I wanted you to do/the game intended" was when she was stuck in the spider web. And even then, part of the dialogue is covered up by the rock And then goes back to just being terrible. We never see her develop. We never see her try to be nice. Sure; I missed out on RE3 the first time around; but that's my own fault; for not being old enough; and for not having the console to play it on. But I was allowed to play RE2 on the N64 though...and that's why Leon Kennedy is my favorite character in that series. And also: the RE4 remake. Here’s something they could have done for Bowser- have the Royal Sticker’s power slowly drive him nuts, like they do with the bosses. Here’s how- During the prologue, have Kersti say that anyone who misuses a Royal Sticker will begin to lose themselves, something reinforced by Megasparkle Goomba. After clearing Chapter 1, we cut to a short scene of Bowser taunting Peach about his new power and getting mad that Mario has taken one of the Royal Stickers back, and that he beat up Junior. Standard stuff. As you clear more chapters, more scenes like this come up, but Bowser gets more aggressive as the game goes on, to the point that Junior and Kamek both become worried. At the end of Chapter 5, we see Bowser utterly lose it, threatening to burn his minions alive, yelling at Junior when he speaks up, and when Peach tries to calm him down, he roars at her and threatens to tear her apart, something he normally would *never* do. And then when you get to the final boss room, he’s devolved into the nonverbal roaring beast he is in the game we got.

Can we just appreciate how things were when this review started to where we are now? -We not only got a remake of Super Mario RPG, finally getting Geno/Mallow out of copyright jail for our first proper Mario RPG game in 8 years -We not only got a remake of Thousand Year Door announced before Mario RPG was even released, suggesting reception and feedback played a strong role -And then we finally get the final piece of the puzzle with an entirely new Mario and Luigi game making its debut on a home console at long last All three series were revived in less than a year, what a great time to be alive.

I remember when this game was coming out, I was so excited. I was disappointed by Super Paper Mario simply because it wasn’t like 64 or Thousand Year Door so when I found out the next game was gonna be turn based again I was hyped like crazy and begged for the game for Christmas. I finally got it and once I played for awhile and saw how linear the chapters were, how cryptic some of the puzzles were and the lack of partners and fun NPCs to interact with I was so upset and never even bothered with the other two modern games. The Thousand Year Door remake will be the first Paper Mario game I buy in over 10 years. The one positive thing I could say about this game (other than the music and visuals) is that it gave me a new appreciation for Super Paper Mario. A game I previously disliked. It showed me that while it was more of a platformer with RPG elements, it still had its own Paper Mario like identity in its writing and characters and it tried something new without abandoning the biggest things that make the series great.

I had a somewhat similar experience with Sticker Star. I loved Thousand Year Door and while I didn't like Super Paper as much as the first two, I did still like it, so when I convinced my dad to take me to the game shop one weekend to get a new game for me to play on the trip we were about to take, I immediately grabbed Sticker Star. Heck, I even got the version that came with some actual stickers. I don't remember if that was some sort of collectors edition or a launch bonus or what, but I had it. Think there was a poster, too. Anyway, I started playing it, and I remember getting to the desert world boss and then... stopping. The game was either frustrating or boring. Those were the only two emotions it was able to evoke in me while playing it, and so when I found myself unable to beat the boss (I think I used the baseball bat too early, and I couldn't be bothered to try and kill him with normal stickers. Either that or I didn't get the bat) I just took it out of my 3DS and played the GBA games I had on my 3DS for the rest of the trip and never touched Sticker Star again.

As someone used to long video essays and reviews, the most interesting thing to me is that it is structured kinda like your Let's Plays, in linear order of how you play the game, but with specific takedowns of various aspects of the game given between the explanation of what you need to do to get through the game. I have to imagine that took some planning in order to figure out what to talk about and when. I wanna say I read an Other M review that did something similar, except it was mostly about the story (which is much easier as Other M's story is almost entirely cutscenes).

Watching this, I've just realized something...I can not remember a single thing from when I played Sticker Star as a kid. And to be fair, my memory of when I was a kid is pretty bad, but I remember at least one thing from each Paper Mario game. In 64, it was being confused that the game just locked at the "the end" screen because I grew up in a time where post-games were more common place. In Thousand Year Door, it was returning to Glitzvile after Chapter 3 to fight Rawk Hawk over and over again for some reason. In Super Paper Mario, it was learning that there were optional pixls and general post-game stuff. But Sticker Star is a complete blank.

The more that I think about that awful moment where the Wiggler segment kicks the Bowling Ball out of the way, the only reason I could ever think of why it even exists is that they didn’t want you to have two segments at a time, since the level behind the bowling pins leads you to finding the next segment, but that’s the only reason I could think of why they’d do that ( *I’m not defending this decision, mind you* ). Also, I never mentioned it previously, but despite the video ending on a negative statement about Sticker Star, I really like the overall hopeful tone of the end of it.

One can only hope that the success of the TTYD remake show's that people like the engaging and story driven plots of the first 3 games that also had good gameplay loops (even if Super Paper Mario is more of an action platformer with lite RPG elements) and dislike the gimmicky gameplay with stupid paper related jokes, lame story and pointless fights the later 3 entries had. But who knows what the 7th Paper Mario game will hold, hopefully be more like the original trilogy and not be a continuation of what made Sticker Star and Color Splash so bad and what also made Origami King felt undercooked

1:35:24 Not sure if this was mentioned in the original video but, the "intended" solution was to use the sponge when Blooper is about to spew poison at Mario, making it absorb and squeeze back at it, inflicting blinding poison on Blooper itself, and making the rest of the fight a literal cakewalk (all of its attack will miss and it takes huge poison damage each turn). It also changes the music into one of my favorite tracks in the game, which you would never hear if you play sticker effectively, or as Kersti calls it, """ineffectively""".

I remember reading somewhere (I cant remember where so please correct me if Im wrong) that Chugga brought up at one point that Bobby's sacrificed bothered him because it retconed how Bob-ombs didnt die from exploding in the previous games. And... I get that, But to be honest? I always imagined that Bob-ombs in the Paper Mario universe can deside if they wanted to live or not. The enemy bob-ombs didnt reappear if they exploded after all. (unless you exit and reenter the area but thats just common in RPG's anyways so I dont count that) And... tbh Bobby's sacrifice actually got to me. I legit wasnt expecting it when I first played the game, and how both Mario and Olivia react to it helped in making it work a lot more than Kirsti's sacrifice to me.

@@jrhamari I get that, but when death comes with characters in the actual design portion there is always a well defined reason a character dies if they should die. Usually it being absolutely necessary for future events to happen. Within Origami King I'm not sure if Bobby's death was necessary from the story perspective due there being history of bobombs living after exploding. So I think the real reason Bobby died was for balance with the game's mechanics and not having too many partners at a time. One of the big things in game design is focusing on what is most important to the genre first and building other pieces on top of that clearly defined system. So for an RPG the first focus would be story then battle mechanics if done correctly.

I remember seeing the individual parts of this after the world 3 part came out and was recommended to me on KZbin. Then I forgot about it, until last night Sticker Star somehow came up in conversation with my friends, and I looked up your review of the game and saw you had finished the series a year ago now. After watching it in full, this is one of my favorite game reviews. As a kid, I remember thinking the game was “fine”. But, as you went through every level in this game, memories came flooding back. Memories of wasting Thing stickers because I didn’t use the right one, memories of asking that stupid crown what to do and her giving me nothing to work with. Memories of this game being so convoluted that I frequently used walkthroughs online. Memories of World 3 taking forever, and having to look up the bowling ball because I didn’t know what to do. This review encapsulates everything I felt about this game deep down. When this game came out, I was 9 years old, and I did actually beat and 100% the game. But it wasn’t natural because of how often I had to use a walkthrough. If people want to say “oh it doesn’t matter, it’s a game for kids”, then I say to them “kids literally will not be able to beat this game, how could it possibly be for them?” What an awful game. Truly a shame this was my first exposure to Paper Mario.

I heard that higher ups wouldn't let the developers make new cool characters. So maybe they purposefully made the game bad so Nintendo would learn that people don't like bad Paper Mario games.

2:23:53 I actually did manage to beat Bowser without using Kersti back when I was younger, but it took a bit of planning. A few Infinijumps for the arms, twenty Iron Jumps for the face, and the High Heel and Squirt Gun to make the face a bit faster, since those are the only multihitting Thing stickers. I oddly don't remember hating the game, but it *was* eleven or so years ago. I think I just wanted to sell Kersti and was disappointed I couldn't keep her in the album.

This whole review was SO fitting for Chugga's Channel. Over the 10 year since I've been watching him (Oh God I've been watching him since I was 11, I'm getting old) him whole channel has been about him playing games he loves in some way. There have been times were some of the games he played have had things that he didn't like but they didn't ruin his overall enjoyment of the game, hence why does a Let's Play of it. However, Sticker Star has been a game he has vehemently HATED, so him doing a LP of it wouldn't be as fun as it would normally would. Turning the LP on to a Review and going over everything technically wrong and just personal gripes, allows him to have MUCH more fun with it, and it still feels like a Chuggaconroy Let's Play. This is something I love to see come back in some form. Also, I blocked the time I played this game from my mind, and this made me remember how much I hated a lot it.

Ok that’s actually pretty funny like the game is so bad that it could only last long enough for you to finish it once since it knows you’re never going to pick it up again. Might as well die when it does its job instead of collect dust.

I remember playing this game and running into all the "mandatory secrets" that I would sometimes find by chance but usually have to look up a guide for. Normally, finding a secret in a game makes you feel smart for finding it, but in this game because they're the only way to beat the level, they made me feel stupid for not finding them! I'm glad I'm not the only one, lol.

I watched every part as it came out, and I watched it again when the full review was released. I don't think I've ever personally been this hurt by any one game, but to hear you speak so passionately about a series that you love and your personal experiences with what could generously be called "the nadir" just hits different, you know? But you still end on a hopeful note and that brings me hope as well. I love the medium of video games so much that I'm working to become a developer and it's heartening to know that folks like you are out there Emile. Thank you for that.

Sticker Star was the first Paper Mario game I ever played. I got it for Christmas because I loved watching TTYD on your channel, but I got stuck like so many on World 2. Ironically a few days after having the game, it fell out of my game storage box in a car and I never found the game again… I probably dodged a bullet… CAN’T WAIT FOR TTYD ON NINTENDO SWITCH!!!

Hey Chugga, just watched through this whole thing, and honestly it filled me with a lot of emotions. I don't watch your let's plays very much anymore, but I used to be a religious watched, and you're actually the person who, when I was like, 12 years old, made me want to become a youtuber. After a lot of failed starts, I'm finally making videos pretty consistently. It's been a long 13 years since I binged your pikmin series while I was sick, making me feel 10 times better. I've kind of grown past let's plays - I don't know, it's just not something I've been able to get into for a while. I might try one at some future point, and if I do it'll definitely be one of yours, but really... seeing this video was amazing. Longform video essays about media people are passionate about is something I eat up now, and seeing a video of yours I was excited to click on and that I enjoyed watching from start to finish... well it was kind of emotional to me, not gonna lie, hahaha. I don't know to what extent you plan to make more of these, but I want you to know that I am eagerly awaiting each on you produce, because this video was PHENOMENAL. Your excited, goofy style is such a breath of fresh air in this format and I think you've made one of the best reviews I've personally seen for a video game. I know I was taking notes~ Best of luck with everything!

First off, Chugga, VERY well done on the critique! This long form review style fits your indepth knowledge and research like a glove! Second, if I may step into my Not-A-Game-Designer suit for a moment, I can think of a way that this sticker style would work well without too much hassle and changing - stick the stickers on Mario. Remember how in SSB Brawl, they let you put stickers on the bases of your characters to give them boosts? Repeat that formula here. Add one page to the sticker album for "boosters" that power up Mario, and as you play along, the page to play with gets bigger. The more stickers you stuff in that page, the better Mario's inputs become. You wouldn't even have to change that much of the base game. Now, your jump, hammer, and fire flower stickers attacks get boosted by whatever you stick to Mario. You go out of your way to find stickers of specific types because now, not only are they your attacks, but they are your boosts as well. It adds in customization, gives battles a reason to engage in, player agency, AND frees up space in the album. Include your suggestion about using Things themselves for puzzles and Thing stickers in battle as screen nukes, and you've solved a large majority of the gameplay!

1:51:45 I wanted to speak up about this part again to note something about this boss fight. Battling this guy normally shows an 'interesting' game mechanic, getting the big boo to around half health will have him turn the lights on, making him unable to be damaged by normal stickers because Mario can't see him (something hinted at in the room next to the basement). In order to beat him during this, you could either use the stapler/pin/tape to pin him in place revealing his position, or use a water sticker to extinguish the candle light to make him visible again (Yes, using the water pistol makes you have to aim, and yes I love it for that reason). Thankfully, this actually IS one of the few times the game hints at using these things, as both the watering can and the stapler are thrown in your face here, plus the shortcut to toad town allows you to turn them into stickers immediately after getting them; fantastic level design here... too bad the game encourages braindead brute force behavior instead of you know THINKING!!
