INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 5-13-20 1:31 pm
LOCATION: SB I-805 JNO of L St
CITY: Chula Vista
DETAILS:
Two vehicles collided for unknown reasons while southbound on the I-805. One vehicle flew off of the freeway and into a ravine approx 60 feet down. It hit a piece of a freeway pole (call box?), and through a guardrail. The other vehicle flipped onto its side.
The driver of the vehicle in the ravine self extricated and climbed back up to the freeway. The elderly driver had to be extricated by firefighters. Both were transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The #4 & #5 lanes were blocked causing traffic to back up. Both drivers gave conflicting accounts as to how the accident occurred.

I lived in San Diego almost half my life and I have NEVER, EVER seen so many cars and trucks flipped upside down, and most of the time it's middle of a nice, sunny day driving less than 40mph. It's unbelievable. I don't even know how to roll a car on purpose. These people are experts at it. I saw a guy in what looked like to be a new Ford Ranger straddle the divider at the 5/78 split at Oceanside-Carlsbad right across from the lagoon. How do you do that? I think they turn the steering wheel all the way, and stand on the brakes like your life depended on it.

Not every engine has rescue stabilizer/strut. Its usually carried in SAR/ Heavy/Urban Resue Trucks. I'm sure they would have used it if they had one. But I agree they could have extricated him a better way. But I'm not a FF so what do I know.

That is one of the oddest extractions. Dude the car is already totaled. Cut the roof off and get this man out. And then there is the one firefighter holding the car up. Seriously if the car is going to turn over you are not going g to stop it.

This is why you should always have on clean socks with no holes when you leave the house. Imagine having dirty socks on when being extricated from you vehicle and losing your shoes… 😉

Unfortunate to see such a rag tag extrication. Nothing to stabilize the Explorer (other than one Firefighter trying to hold it up), and neither the patient or Firefighter even wearing a facial mask...

Over the steering wheel was easier than straight up the passenger window? Sometimes these rescues create more damage than is necessary. That wasn't exactly a total.

If the man in the Explorer wasn't seriously hurt, then why not turn the SUV right-side up? It would seemingly be much easier then pulling him through the windshield & risk the thing tipping over?

They ask questions before they move you. I have been in this situation a few times and have had 4 totaled accidents and ambulance response to 2 and was injured and they asses the situation based on their training. so they won’t just go move you with broken neck back or limbs unless your car is in danger of explosion and has caught fire; then the risk is assets, right!

I think they are both older.... And one thing about older folks, it that back when they got their license.... when they had to walk uphill both ways in 5 feet of snow to the MOT, they didn't have to look in their blindspot.
