Just came across your channel and wow. Your storytelling skills are impressive. I work in Singapore so I think my testimony carry some weight. Of course working in sg and living in malaysia makes the most financial sense. But in the long run, it is not worth it. So that leaves 2 options. 1) working and living in Malaysia 2) working and living in Singapore. It’s true that Singapore rental is high, but even after rental expense, I still find myself saving more even without the conversion and that’s because everything else is so much cheaper. Chicken rice in SG cost $3.5 and that same plate cost rm8 in jb. The job progression is so much better in Singapore as well. Of course don’t expect to be treated the same way as the local. But generally, the annual increment and the bonuses are way better than in Malaysia. I can afford the latest gadgets and when I go back home to visit my family, the spending power of Sgd is mind blowing in malaysia. Don’t hate me.. I love Malaysia but it just makes so much more sense for me to work in Singapore
@LifeOfAshlynOng Жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, could you please explain more why it is not worth it?
@Whatexactlyispeace Жыл бұрын
@@LifeOfAshlynOng for me, my working hours are 830am to 6pm and I believe this is generally the same for most office workers. If I were to live in JB and work in SG, I need to work up at 430am in order to wash up and reach JB Sentral at 530am. Then after all the queue/ custom/ bus ride to woodlands, it would be around 730am and that leaves me 1 hour to reach office in Raffles at 830am. When I leave work, it would take me 3.5 hours on average to reach back home in JB. After my dinner and shower, that’s already 1030pm and it’s time for bed. No personal time at all. If I want personal time, I need to eat into my sleep time. This is not sustainable.

Stay in JB and work in Singapore only works for two type of people, self employed or business owners who have the luxury to drive in and out during non-peak hrs. Eg. After 9am, and before 5pm. Other than that, it is totally not worth it to sacrifice sleep hours to get that spending power, in the long run your health deterioration would outweigh the benefit of 3.5x. Also, there are a lot of negative hidden factors such as job progression maybe affected, less opportunity, etc. Cheers.

Hi from KL and been doing this since 2018, but it is better to rent in Singapore there to avoid that crazy border crossing. It depends on your starting earning salary. Then again just waiting until RTS to be completed. Anyway I do know the way of crossing via bus between JB-SG. Lastly think about your long term retirement savings if you decide to retire in Malaysia then it would be worth while in my opinion. Plus for Malaysian having SG PR then one can open a CPF account. So when you retire then you have both CPF and EPF retirement savings.
@LifeOfAshlynOng Жыл бұрын
Hi! May I know why do you think that's better to rent in Singapore? What if you are from JB?
@ebcho1 Жыл бұрын
@@LifeOfAshlynOng ...it all boils down to what is your earning salary and what is your rent budget. Obviously if you are a JB resident it is a different individual perspective given the close proximity of JB and SG in distance where home is much close by. Anyway I am commenting for an individual non native JB or Johore state. After all it is an individual personal choice. Lastly, is how much one wants to save $$ to repatriate back one's home country. So there is no wrong or right answer and it's a subjective matter, which is what can be economical for others might not be economical for others as well so it depends and boils down how one manages their own finances and spend on what they think is important in terms of"needs" rather than "wants"...lol.

Too stressful even for youngsters. You will have no life travelling 4 to 6 hours everyday. It would be better to rent a room is Sg for 1k may be? per month, and have some leisure time. I should think the cost will be about the same as travelling to and from JB. And make sure you get a pension in the end. Have lots of savings to buy a house in M'sia and retire happily. Good luck!

What retirement benefits? When one retires is when one is out of job - choice or not. Then you only rely on what you have kept away over the years. There is no retirement benefit.

Many Singaporeans including my uncle during the 70s n 80s go to UK for manual work as dishwashers or restaurants waiter when the exchange rates back then were like 4Sgd-1£. He was paid £500 which was like $2000 for 12hours work n undesirable sleeping conditions n it was super good money back then when average salary in spore was $400/$500, certainly it was alot harder for Sporeans back then.

I am currently staying in Sydney at the moment. Being an international student living in Sydney city, everything (hereby I mean the expenses of dining outside in the restaurant and rental is far more expensive than in Singapore. You can't find a roll of sushi below AUD3.50 (at least AUD2.50 for the cheapest option like rice in the taopok - I forgot what they called it opps...). A lot of people would rather wake up earlier to make their own meal. At most, to not overspend, I buy coffee and 2 sushi rolls to feed and wake myself up in the morning for school days (I only have days per week to go to school, the rest of the days I camp inside the library, either bring my own food or I spend $15 for Ma La Tang, $7 Domino pizza, either one way can settle hunger issue lols. PS:// No cafe is selling their coffee at a price below AUD3.80 (unless you order Espresso). Also, talking about the cost of living in Australia, was already known as one of the highest among other cities on the planet earth. Unfortunately, it is higher than before COVID-19. Student accommodation has achieved $750-$800 rental per week in its highest period (here means the student apartment, or those newly built ones, with good quality features like in Central Park, during the mid-year of 2023). It has dropped a lot right now in the city, however still quite expensive as compared to a lot of suburbs. If you are coming over to Australia as an international student with a lot of budget, and you can cater to this amount of expenditure, it is still not a big deal or problem living in the city. Some budget ways if you are coming to study abroad, please consider staying in a suburb not as close to the Sydney CBD, like Epping. I have a classmate living comfortably in Epping, paying AUD478 per week for their rental, as two pax for a landed house with 2 garages. She's paying AUD200 per week, which means AUD800 per month. Hope all this information helps! As I am not sure if you are planning to go to Melbourne or any other cities in Australia... Sydney has the highest expenses among all :) in general @@Aliya-tc5un

I know someone from JB that commutes daily into Singapore every day for work. He has a routine of sleeping at 9:30 pm and waking up at 4:00 am weekday. Have been doing it close to 10 years and just gotten used to it. I myself has crossed in evenings during those peak hours for a visit sometimes and it’s no joke. So, it’s basically a full on endurance for those doing it everyday. There is no wrong or right if you want to stay in Singapore or commute from Malaysia daily instead. It’s just how much can you or want to save and the willingness of spending about 3 - 4 hrs of daily commute by foot. I would argue that there is a threshold that if your pay is above SGD 5,000/month, you will be ok living in SG directly and still have some decent savings given the buying power in SG. Lastly, I find that daily expenses in SG can be low if you are frugal with it. If you considered conversion, bulk grocery shopping in Malaysia is much cheaper.

So i spent 12 hours for my full time job+ freelance+ other businesses. It's better earning compare to waking up at 4am just to work in other country that has higher conversion. In the long run, you may get more or less compare to working full time job in SG but at least there is a hope that your business can go up to RM20-80k monthly. So i got to say is take your risk.

While the first week was great, the rest of month, I found my health deteriorating due to lack of sleep and poor diet. Weekends are spent trying to recuperate. Earning SGD and living in MY makes a lot of sense if you can work remotely or if the is flexibility in timing. Otherwise, the effort and time stuck in transit and the value of time in monetary sense, health and mental wellbeing, it makes more sense to just live in SG.

I like to tell you and to all my many Msians friends who are working in SG, you should not be just be looking at money sense. If you do, you shall lose the woods. Working and Living in SG is a life journey experience that SG offers you. Which other country offerred you a job with all the perks n cheap tax? Be honest. USA, AUS, UK, Japan?? Be grateful. Not everyone get to be offered a job in SG, not even if you are from London! This is 2024 not 1890 of the EIC lordship. SG offers you a new view of what the world ought to be. Safety, efficiency, work recruitment fairness, training grants abounds, food you buy from the humble hawker centre is cheap, ... safely cooked and handled! Police that comes and enforce the laws, be you UHNWI or a poor legi migrant worker. Bus shall come right one time, everytime! No body cut Qs, ...alll things that you shall in time take forgranted. I know, because I now work in in a 1st world country! V o m it blood. You can also find bias at work, .. if you keep looking for it. Many come with the entiltled mentality, .. esp the westerners. But we all know why they are still in SG. Many act like they comes from ultra space with super righteouness and cleanliness and their boss back home can't wait to recall them back. It doesnt take much to uncover that they are just HQ dead wood or new economic refugees. But I have met really great talents, humble and most willing to integrate. Lives in the heartlands and play with the heartlanders. Out public housing is the best in the world that out beats even the western, Jap (Danchi), Seoul, HK by the miles in terms of clealiness, amenities, size, safety! You shall never integrate is you live in JB n work in SG. You must get out to mix with the locals. Besides there more more than 1million Msians in SG! If you still cannot swim as a Chinese Msian in SG, then you are a dysfunctional. Trust me. I worked in HK, Melbourne, SF in my past 30 years. It is ALL the same. Pros n cons (gross income, tax, recreations, safety, food, friend impoverished) If U subconsciously keep obsessively look for the black ink blotches as brag or citicism points to folks at home talk, you shall find it. But you are so blind to the 98% of the paper are beautifully pristine white. These are the exhibits of an ignorant low lifers. The last thing, ... SG might not be your final destination. But it is worthy to consider it as a final. I have work and lived in many western countries, ..raised chidren there too. You might find love here too in SG. .. learn to appreciate the system. Maybe also find a life partner. Just remember, SG is not stupid. Every system and regualtion exiisted becuase thousands of intelligent civil service officers had cracked it and arrived at what they think is the best solution. You not knowing the background is your own fault. So desist the ignorant critisicim. I know it is nor easy living in a new country. Becuase I am now... only without your previldge as a Chinese Msia that SG is offerring you. Thanks for reading. Sorri it is a bit long.
