In Judaism, a negative prophecy may subsequently be annulled in response to repentance of the people who have been warned by God of the consequences of their bad ways. This is what happened for the repentant people of the city of Nineveh, as told in the Book of Jonah.

I am a christian . I agree to the real meaning of the Book of Jonah according to Rabbi. But as a christian I have to listen to what Jesus said. Why did Jesus mentioned about the three days ? There are other things that Jesus mentioned like the temple. He said he would rebuilt the temple in three days. How about when he told his disciples that he would come down on the cloud(s)? Remember, this was mentioned in the Torah in a very similar event when God came down upon a cloud to Moses. Exodus chapter 34.

Yona has to be my favorite prophet. He's stubborn, he gripes, he pouts, he's successful (the people he warned actually listened to him and he is unhappy about it), he begs for his life in the fish, then wishes he was dead when the worm eats the vine God gave him as shade. I can't think of any other prophet that is so truly human. Not only does God forgive Nineveh, but preserves, forgives, tolerates, and even consoles and ministers to a total insolent brat of a grown man. Praise, Thanksgiving, Glory, and Blessings be unto God, the One and Only for the kindness, patience, and mercy we've all been given.

I think I saw 3 or 4 online church services talking about Jonah last week & all of them said, taught, that it was about obeying God even when we don't to. That Jonah was afraid of the Ninevites doing the awful things to him that they were known for. Nothing about how he was actually afraid that they'd change their ways in repentance while Israel wouldn't & he'd have to see their punishment because of their stubbornness. That anyone can come to God & repent, anytime, no matter how bad someone is. I look fwd to hearing many in the church have that "aha" moment when reading the Hebrew scriptures. It all makes much more sense because names & characters aren't changed to fit the crime, I mean, the truth.

@@sharkair2839 I went to Seminary and trained for ministry.. I spent 40 years as a Christian, and 20 years as an independent researcher and student of the New Testament. I've since left the church as I've concluded all my research. The Jewish faith is what I've concluded is "true" religion (and Jewish Kabbalah is the 'true wisdom').. The reason I believe this is because the Hebrew Scriptures are the word of God, and the Torah is God's revelation with which he framed the universe . . Christians cannot comprehend the Hebrew scriptures. Their connection to Idolatry and false deity worship blinds them so that they cannot see a thing out of the scriptures until they repent of their Idolatry and god-man worship and their eyes get opened.. does not matter what book of the Hebrew scriptures. they don't get any of it. They only have a peripheral surface understanding of the stories, like a 10 year old could get at sunday school,, that's about it.

@Tovia Singer Rabbi, doesn't the sign of Jonah go against the beliefs they have about Jesus? God forgave without blood sacrifice it was about forgiveness if you return to God and walk upright? But Jesus was too d i e because they believe his blood sacrifice is the only way to be forgiven? So how could the sign of Jonah be the same of Jesus when they believe a sacrificehas to be made first? Unless the only sign they author of Matthew cared about was Jesus being in the heart of the earth like Jonah was in the belly of the whale, but Jonah also didn't die or make a sacrifice to be forgiven either right?

*_GayZEUS_* of the Synoptic Gospels is a literary character invented by the Romans to promote the recent arrival of the Flavian dynasty to imperial power, creating an archetype of messiah towards which all preexisting Jewish prophecies converged. The aim was (1) to empty Jewish concepts, hijacking the messianic hope and solidifying a controversial archetype of Jewish messiah, (2) to blame the Jews for their own destruction in the war of Jerusalem in 70 and (3) to exalt the Flavian dynasty of emperors. The content of the message propagated by the characters in the narrative portrays an agenda of political accommodation, preservation of the imperial “status quo”, anti-Judaism and military indoctrination: both for Roman soldiers and for colonized civilians. Soldiers are often the recipients of the teachings of the Gospels, which occur both explicitly (as in Luke 3:14, when John the Baptist recommends that soldiers be content with their pay, just as Rome advised those recruited for military service) and implicitly (as in Luke 9:23, when the instruction is given to abandon everything - family, friends, work - and follow the leader, just as the government wanted the soldiers to do). There is also abundant teaching reinforcing the civil obligation to serve soldiers, including obeying them for twice the amount required (Matthew 5:41). The character Jesus always presents himself as the reformer of the Law of Moses (Matthew 5:38, correcting Exodus 21:24 on the principle of “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”) and the propagator of various Roman laws (as in Mark 10:12 on marriage and in Matthew 22:21 recommending the payment of taxes). Jesus never taught his disciples to love Jews or their relatives, but he *_did teach them to love Romans (Matt. 5:44) and to turn the other cheek (Matt. 5:39). The Flavian Theory, therefore, not only presents a coherent argument for the literary origins of Jesus, but also highlights the Romans' ability to use religion as a tool of sociopolitical control. *_Some of the most enigmatic passages found in the gospels are more easily understood when seen through the eyes of a general speaking to his legions._* *I had an insipid deplorable two faced Greek woman admit to all of it proudly in these comment boards awhile ago, very sickening.* 🤮🤮🤮

The people of Nineveh were not Jews. Neither did Jonah convert them to Judaism. But a way of salvation was made for them that involved the creation of a special fish. Likewise, today we have a large population of non-Jewish people for which a way of salvation is made for them that involves a fish. Wikipedia says: "The ichthys or ichthus (/ˈɪkθəs/[1]), from the Greek ikhthū́s (ἰχθύς, 1st cent. AD Koine Greek pronunciation: [ikʰˈtʰys], "fish") is (in its modern rendition) ..... The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience._ _6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor._

Forgiving all, even the worst is a major part of the Christian Bible, Because Jesus said not only to love your neighbour, but to pray for your enemies. Forgiveness is a very strong core subject of Christianity. Having said that, we expect those we forgive also to repent. Forgiveness is an open invitation to a Godly life style, to exchange living in the flesh to living in the Spirit. The Human sacrifice part is also not a bad thing at all, because it was foreshadowed by Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac. Jesus also wasnt a human sacrifice, He was given by God. its a different thing from a human sacrificing a human to an idol God. Its like comparing apples to oranges.

But Jesus did not get up on that cross all by his lonesome. He didn't miraculously drive the nails into his hands and feet. He was executed as a would-be rebel--"King of the Jews"--by a people who knew nothing about the idea that God had sent this particular person to be a sacrifice to save the world, and probably would have cared even less had they known. The Romans saw him as a threat to be taken out. They did not see themselves as conducting a sacrifice. In order to do so, they (and everyone else present at the scene) would have KNOWN that they were conducting a sacrifice, they would have UNDERSTOOD that what they were doing was conducting a sacrifice, and they would have INTENDED what they were doing as a sacrifice. Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems like every time sacrifice is mentioned in the Tanakh, whether it is human sacrifice or animal sacrifice, to God or to other gods, the people doing the sacrificing understood that this was not a random killing nor a judicial killing, but an act of sacrificing. What went on in the Temple was not the same as what goes on in a slaughterhouse even though both involve killing animals. You would not call Swift or Armour or other packinghouses temples and you would not call the killing floor an altar nor those who wield the knife or stun gun priests. It's all in the intent. The cows and the pigs and the sheep and the chickens are not being killed to placate a god, they are being killed for food. It was only later, after Jesus had disappeared back into the heavens, that the idea arose that his death was a sacrifice. But it was not understood as such by those who were doing the actual killing! So therefore, it really was not a sacrifice as the Tanakh understands sacrifice or even other religions then and now understand sacrifice.

@@FrankieVos Letting it happen is not sacrifice. It's suicide. Just like someone who commits "suicide by cop" by provoking the police is not considered a sacrifice. Doesn't matter how times this person predicted it in advance, it's not a sacrifice, it's suicide. Jesus wanted the Romans to kill him and he knew what he had to do in order to provoke them into doing so. Sounds like "suicide by Roman soldier" to me. The rules regarding sacrifice and who could do it and where they could do it were quite strict. Jesus did not die on the altar in the Temple at the hands of the priests. He died the most shameful death the Romans could think up on the outskirts of town at the hands of Gentiles. And they were quite clear that the reason they were doing it was because he had set himself up as a rival king--even though the Jewish leaders protested that the sign above his head should say "He said, 'I am the king of the Jews', not 'This is the king of the Jews.'" Pilate wasn't having any of that: "What I have written, I have written." Not changing it, this is your king and this is what we do to any kings we didn't appoint. Doesn't sound like a sacrifice to me. Sounds like suicide by political execution.

When Heli died childless, Jacob married his widow and fathered Joseph, who was biologically the son of Jacob but legally the son of Heli (see Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 1:6:7)." That's why the genealogies, seem to differ, but don't. In reality they give remembrance to both, Heli and Jacob, as being the fathers of Joseph. Jonah is such a great little book. It is very disappointing that Christianity looks mainly at 3 -days-in-the-fish, which is all that Jesus did per the three synoptic gospels. If I’m not mistaken Jonah is the first time (and maybe only time) in the Hebrew Bible that God explicitly expresses concern for another nation besides Israel. This is distinct from prophetic texts where God will bless nations thru Israel, an indirect blessing. I am not invested in this idea, would like to see comments.

Human sacrifice? No. Your problem rests in Christ's true identity as judge of all and a unique part of the Triune G-d. When *the Judge himself becomes a man and offers to exchange his life for ours* this is called penile substitutionary atonement and only He can do it perfectly. Our part is to repent (metanoeo) which is a change of belief or thought, not about sin, but about His identity and authority as both G-d and Man to solve our sin problem. Most of the church has been wrong since Augustine by saying we were born sinners. Yes, we grow to have a propensity to sin because we now live in fallen flesh perishing outside of Eden with no access to the tree of life, but we are not born sinners. Paul recognizes there is an age of accountability and says in Romans 7:7 to 12 --> 9. "For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died." He's saying he was alive as an innocent child not knowing the law, but once he had awareness of sin and the law, then sin condemned him. Paul disproves the RCC dogma of "original sin" and its errant Calvinist cousin called "Total Depravity".

Wasn't the blood of a lamb not sprinkled on the mercy seat to atone for the sin of the people? God's plan was/is that ultimately the shed blood of His Son would atone for the people. I can’t leave my church like you can’t leave the Law. Christianity is the religion of my fathers and my ancestors of Western culture. Of course worshipping Christ is not ideal as worshipping the Moshiach. Like the enlightened Buddha, Christ is the anointed Son of man. His life is an example of the Suffering Servant. He said render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s. If the Jews wouldn’t have rebelled against Rome and embodied the Suffering Servant of Isaiah, the Second Temple wouldn’t have been destroyed. The Death of the Anointed is symbolic of us each becoming the Passover lamb, our Souls surrendering our bodies to the LORD rather than ourselves and our electrical pleasures. God is perfectly Holy and Christ’s death and resurrection is symbolic of our spiritual reconciliation with God Most High while cursed with the death from Sin. Jesus is to be our example. He never commanded others to worship him, but when they did he didn’t command them to stop. Likewise, Rabbi surely knows the feeling of being elevated by others while still aware of our equality before our Creator. But humility translates flattery into reverence for God’s complete sovereignty of the situations to allow us to be useful servants for his Kingdom.

Job 19:25-27, Psalms 16:8-11, 71:20, 49:13-15, Isaiah 26:19-20, 53:10-11, Daniel 12:2-3, Jonah 1:17, 6-7, 10 We have faith that the anointed one of God has atoned for our sins of which the wages is death. Isaiah 53. Whomever should rely on and trust in Jesus will have everlasting life. But the greatest of these is love. Life evermore in God’s presence. Songs of Solomon, the union of the bridegroom and His bride, Zion. Jesus will come down on Mount Zion where He ascended into heaven in His majesty and glory.

Matthew 12: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The crew on the ship were spared by what they thought was Jonah's, death. God had other plans. Jonah explained to them, that by his death they would be spared. *This is a sign* of what God would Do for Israel and all nations, through The Lord Jesus His messiah. Psalms 89, show us that messiah would be cast down. Without the life, death and resurrection, of the Lord Jesus, There can be no eternal inheritance. messiah was slain before the foundations of the world in the foreknowledge of God. Before God made anything he preordained the incarnation of his word. It is the only way God could allow humanity to have free will, knowing what would happen, beforehand, or he would of had to destroy everything as we see somewhat in the days of Noah. Even though we do not see everything, put under his feet at this pointed. Everything was put to death and raised in Christ. it was the only way God, could redeem his life that is in all things, describing the nature of All things. His life death and resurrection is in all things, pure and clean in God. Without God's promise, Israel as well as everything else would not exist. it is God's insurance allowing him to restore his life, that is in all things, back to himself, without the contamination of sin, Caused by humanity.

Jesus sinned and did not repent. He encouraged other people to sin. Don’t be like Jesus.
