Part 2: The Sanctuary. Demolition of Central United Methodist Church in Arlington, Virginia, across the street from the Ballston Metro Station. The old church is being replaced by an apartment building with a new church at the ground level. The sanctuary is the oldest part, built with structural clay tile rather than concrete masonry units.

Thanks, John. A most interesting project. I think those trusses they used to span that wide space are fascinating. They're built up of multiple boards instead of large beams, I suppose because they couldn't get beams long enough to span the width. At 1:02:48 they don't seem at all concerned about dumping rubble on the cemetery they are supposed to be protecting.

I think they got surprised by the rubble falling on the cemetery, but they shouldn't have been. This was a great demonstration of how tie beams are crucial to keeping rafters from spreading out and pushing out the walls. They had removed the final tie beam when they took out the last truss. They might have thought the end wall would provide enough support, but it didn't - the roof just pulled away.

When they demolished Shea Stadium,everything was recycled. Steel,cement,asphalt,aluminum,wood and seating and placed into neat separate piles for transport to different recycling facilities in New York and New Jersey The chairs in the bleachers were sold to collectors for big money.

The steeple is demolished in Part 3, which is still being edited. You can do a lot with a Sawzall and crowbar.
