It used to drive me crazy when i would hear the word Fellowship turned into a verb. "We were just fellowshipping on the Lord yesterday". What does that mean??? Also the words "we just...".as in "Father God we just come before you today Father to worship you Father God.". I call it the We Just Litany.

An elder at a church I used to pastor would always talk about the "hedgebush" of protection God places around his people. For years I tried to tell him that a hedge is a bush, and you don't have to say it twice, but he would not just use the word hedge. The hedge of protection is bad enough, but when you add the synonym, aww, man! Granted, this was the same guy who was convinced he could end and win any argument by ending his sentence with "period, dot!"

At my first time out to a church singles group (yeah - we used to call them that), after a wonderful time of people talking about God's involvement in their lives, I tearfully asked if the group would accept me. Shortly after, my brother asked "so you want to receive Jesus?". Man I had no idea what that even meant but my cult sensors went up immediately. Despite that, I did become a Christian the next weekend when I was invited to go to a weekend campout with the group. Thank God.

Thanks to the Veggietales Remix (which I found day before yesterday on Spotify.) My kids & I discovered you. LOVE IT!!!! So far all of it is so relatable. I can't tell you have much the phrase "Love on someone" makes me cringe! My most recent churchanese faux pas was talking with a fellow Booster Club Board member about making sure the whole board was cleared to volunteer... "...so that we are above reproach" It was in that moment I realized I may as well have just spoken greek... she had no idea what I said. #bettercheckyourheart haha

IMO "love on" is the worst one. For example, I've been at church and the following has been said: "Let's just love on some children on today".... out of, or even in context, that is so incredibly strange. On that same note, I think the word "just" is a large part of Churchanese ex. "just being intentional" or "just doing life together". That's just my two cents hahaha

@rachelschultz39234 жыл бұрын
hh Yes, in the Bible, most of the time, "laying hands" on someone means arresting or taking them somewhere against their will. Like for instance, Nehemiah threatened to "lay hands" on Jewish people who were acting lawlessly, and the Jewish people in the New Testament repeatedly tried to "lay hands" on Jesus, along with stoning him. Also, about being "on fire," when Jesus talked about the "baptism of fire," He wasn't talking about a pleasant experience. "I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished." -Luke 12:50

One i hear is this conversation i have. "Hey how are you?" "Blessed I am blessed." "So have you been okay?" "Oh yes I have joy." I at that point leave them alone and wait to talk to a real person. That lingo has become so toxic. Now when I say it I mean it, but I relaized I was picking up the lingo, and now I just talk like a human. I thank the Lord. I mean that too. And when I say give it to Jesus, I typically explain to them how to do that, as He showed me. Otherwise it's dismissive. I've had others say that and if we don't explain how to use scripture and how to pray, and how to cast down, what are we talking for? How do we encourage anyone when we just repeat things, with no contextual basis?

So out loud,so cashier could hear,he said, " Lord,Please forgive Julie's sins,and heal..." SHHHHH!!, Why did you pray outloud??! I growled, in an intense scratchy whisper. Then he said out loud, "people will not get saved( in an up down pitch,rhythm emphasized,sing song,death inducing style) unless the GOSPEL is preached!!" Said I," you're not even presenting the Gospel,plus,when you announce to non Christians that I need sin forgiven,ON LINE at the grocery store,they will assume I have drastic,heinous sins needing immediate intervention!!" He robotically repeated,FOUR X'S, " PEOple, canNOT. ,get,SAVED, withOUT, HEaring. ,the GOSpel!!!" So I thought,small wonder he never got to pastor a Church,Thank Our good Lord!!

praying a "hedge of protection" really gets me, considering the context. i mean, how on earth can church goers with so much knowledge about the bible actually use that quote as if it's some kind of special blessing? clearly they haven't read as much of it as they think.
@purplekittigaming3 жыл бұрын
context for anyone who is not aware, people like to pray to god and ask for a "hedge of protection" around a person who is experiencing some kind of trial or conflict. you know, keep them safe from harm, etc. the line comes from the book of job where satan uses the phrase accusingly. basically he says to god, "you know job only likes you because you've set up a hedge of protection around him, and so he only loves you because his life is so easy. but if you let him suffer, then he'll deny you." in modern american terms it would be like accusing someone of living in a bubble, or under a rock. not sympathetic or remotely helpful at all.

Your only mistake is calling Churchanese a "second language." Dude, for many of us, it's our first language. As an editor, I sometimes help authors translate: "This book's audience includes new Christians and some who are searching. They may not be familiar with this. Consider replacing with ____." (Oh, hey! "Searching"/"seeking.") Of course, there are different dialects of Churchanese. Some dialects are denomination-dependent, so I'll suggest an Anglican consider their Baptist audience and vice versa. Others vary more, perhaps based on location-I didn't know about "PTL!" until I helped prepare a skit for chapel at my Christian college. I only knew the full version, "praise the Lord!" I think my church and family's Churchanese was less pronounced than some folks'.

I think to 'love on' someone is supposed to mean to display love to someone, as we are called to love each other. It also sounds weirdly sexual if you don't know that, and is way too vague. How about we start talking about more specific ways to edify the Church and demonstrate the selfless love of Christ to those perishing?
