Nami Island first rose to prominence in the early-2000s after the hit Korean drama series “Winter Sonata” was filmed there, becoming one of the earliest travel destinations associated with the Korean Wave. However, it isn’t “Winter Sonata” that is continuing to draw foreign tourists to the island 20 years later. On top of its convenient location just one hour away from Seoul, the island has also developed a unique identity of its own by creating a pristine natural environment featuring many exotic tree species and fauna. This has helped transform Nami Island into a cultural bastion that hosts a wide variety of global festivals all year long.
In this special edition of the Globalists to mark Chuseok in Korea, we sit down with Nami Island Co. CEO Min Kyung-hyuk to learn more about the island’s transformation over the years and how it aims to be become a global cultural hub in the future.
