This video is from Febuary 13 2022. Here I show how we can disarm the reverse grip knife using standard Aikido techniques. I also show the limitations of the reverse grip and why it's not all that practical.

I just want to leave a comment of appreciation for these excellent videos. I attend a dojo where the boxers, kungfu people and the aikidokas all spar together after their separate classes. These detailed videos are great to share with the newer aikido students and are very helpful on a practical level.

Thank you…with the current climate and my industry this is a great way to protect myself and others as the principle is not to harm. He is a great work husband and his wife is a powerhouse so its great to work with different strengths in creating muscle memory and his not afraid to hurt me in training practice obv we’ll not using proper knives… erm for a long while yet!

I agree with you that as a martial artist in these times I would be most likely to use a standard knife grip. Historically, the reverse grip has been shown to be useful when your opponent is in armor and you have entered into standing grappling range. Then, at that extra close range, the reverse grip is useful to stab between openings in the armor. From a modern perspective, I agree it is very important to practice against someone using a reverse grip. In fact, when I recently went looking for footage of real knife attacks, I was surprised at the number of reverse grip attacks I saw. Even more surprising to me was that I found quite a few examples of attacks using the reverse grip with palm facing up to do circular stabbing attacks usually to the head/neck or torso/ribs. I would have assumed that was a rare attack. That’s why I always look for real footage to make sure I don’t get too caught up in my martial arts bubble. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and perspective! 🙏

Our forefathers, in the middle ages, were making wholesale use of the reverse grip (aka "Sharon Stone grip") because that is the only way to get access to the one and only anatomical point where the knife can get you instant neutralisation.

This is excellent! Would it be possible to see how this would look with an atemi? Because the freeze reaction is so strong in response to a knife threat, I feel that if you train to automatically start with an atemi, the technique reflexively falls into place.
