My martial art teacher is a master against short range weapon, such as knife. He teach a move called the thousand step, in case you are facing someone with weapon the first step you do is rotate your whole body 180° facing back to the potential attacker then put your strong leg in front of the other and then followed by the other in quick succession. It's very effective and it saves me from many trouble in downtown London in the night

I've read about some martial arts self-defense techniques as well. Saw this one, where you prepare both your legs and feet in order to apply force against the floor, which in turn propels the user up, which can come very handy if you face obstacles. I think it was called the Airborne Dance. Seen another one which is kinda a mix of this one and the one you showed us, where you start with the Thousand Step move, before doing the Airborne Dance, and also includes using a full combination of your hands, arms, feet and legs in order to move your body upwards, however not everyone can pull this extremely demanding move, and I've seen some people suffer heart attacks upon trying the very first step of this move. I don't recommend doing it unless you're sure what you're doing.

Jocko said the same thing. He said I’m a Navy Seal and have killed many enemies but if some crazy guy on the street tries to fight me….I’m running away. Why bother fighting when my feet still work? Why? Now if he grabs me that’s a different story. But if I can run….then simply run away. That’s coming from a combat tested navy seal. Good to see an FMA master say the same thing.

The advice I got in a self-defense class, by my sensei in martial arts was, regarding knives, was: 1: "Unless you're in very specific situations, and especially if the person with a knife is skilled, RUN. You cannot defend against a skilled attacker, and even an unskilled attacker can cut you to ribbons." 2: "if someone has you in a hold with knife to your throat, comply. A defensive disarm from this position is possible, but not recommended for anybody who is not very skilled in the first place." 3: "under very specific circumstances where you are threatened with a knife, a defensive disarm is possible." But the biggest lesson I take from that is that defending against a knife is extremely dangerous, at best.

In Germany there were a few knife attacks in crowded places. Some of them ended fatally, in some the attacker could be overpowered, but only because the defenders threw suitcases, chairs or something like that at the attacker. Keeping your distance and attacking from a distance is the only chance to counterattack. You can also wrap a jacket or similar around your arms to protect your arms. Even a sharp knife will not easily cut through several layers of solid fabric or leather. But one must note that the torso remains unprotected.

A knife with a proper sharpening job done on it by a smith, is much much sharper than the edge you get coming from the factory. You dont want to be anywhere near an edge sharpened by a skilled person because it will go right through the clothing youre using to wrap your arms, like it wasnt even there. I started bladesmithing classes at a local blacksmith shop after getting hooked on forged in fire show (like how many started lol) and honestly speaking man, edges i can get now make factory sharp look dull, it took a lot of practice but its pretty awesome how sharp i can get things now. Encountering a custom edge on the street would be very rare, but you never know. Of course if you must absolutely wrap clothing around your arms, but if you can bail, just bail. I got stabbed as a kid by a bully in my arm, its no joke

I like how many comments are just analysing from the couch why this is "wrong" and how to do it properly when in real life anyone who's been trained and skilled with knives will tell you that there is no way you can defend yourself with bare hands against a knife. Unless you carry a firearm, have enough distance and are skilled with the quick draw, hand to hand combat with a knife is brutal and nothing like the movies and bs demos.

@@sword-and-shield I believe you. You can block so you don't get killed, but, from my experience, that is only effective if done at the same time as you attack the person with the knife. If you manage to not get to injured or killed when you stop the attack, and you focus on disconnecting the person attacking you, you can get out of it alive. But you defense has to be much more aggressive than those shown here and accompanied with strong attacks. Plus... If you manage to properly grab the wrist you won't be seriously injured by being poked with the blade being pushed by the fingers, especially if you are beating your attacker to a pulp. The person holding the knife has a huge advantage, especially if trained with it, but it is not unbeatable... Far from it.

Wrist grabbing? gonna be very lucky, wont be me trying that, Arm blocking? more likely successful, AS long as it is in the same process of your offensive attack. Any notion of reacting to the knife first and then acting offensively? like some movie bs, good luck, hope they are some mutt. I got out of both of mine alive, and there was NO defensive actions in either, I'm clearly not stating that as some best practice. There is none. Great video, I've heard this advice many times: "Do not try to fight against a knife", and this video is one more proof of that simple thought. I can only ask other people to pay attention: in this video master do not involve his left hand at all. Its other simple thing that you may forget about in real fight - even if you catch "knife-holding" arm, next second you will get a left hook straight in your face, which will at least disorient you and most probably let you receive a knife stab in next 3 seconds. Be careful and take care.

One of my senseis happen to be a tailor himself. So yeah, it's better to run and if you can't, make sure you got something to shield yourself with. People instinctually attack the part of you closest to them, so if you have an arm out in front of you, they'll go for that. About time someone made a somewhat serious video on this. I feel like I've had this discussion way to many times when practicing with supposedly competent people (mma, ex police, eskrima etc) and the only realiable solutions I have come across so far is to twirl a winter jacket around the empty arm and sacrifice the outside of your arm as a shield as it doesn't have any major arteries, best solution though ended up being grabbing a chair and stabbing the f out of the attacker with the chair legs while he can't get to you.
@hellfrozen9971

Instead of trying to grab it you should either run or atack with a punch or kick,in which chase you should use your reflexes to miss it,because if you try to block it,it's like trying to block a spiky ball, you can't touch it,but you can atack the thing behind it

Pencak Silat from Malaysia and Indonesia also have advanced techniques to use short bladed weapons, mainly Kris, which is the weapon of choice for traditional warriors because of it's concealability and the uneven blade which causes wounds that is very difficult to stop from bleeding. And yes, basic unarmed knife defense are completely useless once the martial artist uses even the mid techniques that are taught to them. Yes, run away when you see someone with such a weapon if you can is the best advice since you can't know the actual level of competence they have with the small weapon... but keep in mind that a knife is also a convenient thrown weapon when running away.

I don't see the likely hood of two skilled knife fighters bumping into each other. Furthermore, there are plenty of reasons why running may not be the best option: you're with your loved ones; it's a tight area; it's your duty to if your a police officer, just to name a few.

A big part of this which you can somewhat prepare for is what your wearing. Knives aernt as sharp as they are in the movies leather tough denim thick heavy fabric will protect more than people realize. Also choosing long sleeves over short sleeves could make a difference. Preparation Is half the battle and having an edc kit with a gun, knife, taser even pepper spray could save your life against a bad guy with a knife. All that being said it definitely is beneficial to be trained in all the ranges of combat. Running isn't always an option. Your families or loved ones lives might be on the line.

From my experiences as an ex doorman most people who pull a knife won't use it, they're just trying to threaten and scare you but I've the seen the damage someone with a knife intent on using it can do. Its the reason I always carried a telescopic baton to disarm knife wielding assailants.

Unfortunately, most batons would be illegal to posses for most people in California. That and any "unnaturally weighted" stick could get you hit with a misdemeanor just for having it, let alone using it for self-defense. Boy you must be glad you don't live here lol

Spot-on on correct, in most cases, running away is often the best effective, viable, defensive decision to do. By running away, the Defender will gain time and distance, thus giving the Defender an opportunity for a possible effective defensive options against a pursuing knife welding attacker. Generally, the best most effective object against an attacker armed with a knife is a defender armed with a handgun. One has to be trained and maintain such training with handguns.

You CAN actually grab those type of long blades, we do it a lot in HEMA (historical fencing). The trick is not letting the blade slice through, so grab it firmly. However I wouldn't try that with a knife, there's simply not enought blade to work with.

True, run if you see a knife-wielder, unless you yourself carry a weapon you are confident on how to use, and which can keep the offender at bay: stick, nunchaku, katana, firearm. Having said that, his demos of attack / defense are equally unrealistic to the usual knife-defense demos seen in various martial arts styles.

@@Lukas-ui1qt That is why one must always carry a form of defensive weapon. 0:57 Correct the best defense is a gun. On the real all defense techniques never work for anything if someone knows what they are doing. If it comes to getting stabbed or fighting back, i'd fight back Perhaps it might make them afraid enough to mess up. Odds are if your being attacked with a knife your going to get stabbed regardless of what you do. The worse thing would be to sit there. I've disarmed people with knives & guns before, guns are easier because with a knife your dodging over & over again hoping you can stay out of range until you get one good shot to take thier arm out completely or knock the knife out of thier hand. Its really not worth it to be honest. I'd prefer having at least a 12" bar if im going to be getting attacked with a knife.
