Ciaran Reilly ties a wet Mayfly

It really is great to see a young and very talented angler carrying the torch. I was lucky enough to be controlled by Ciaran at the Hanak International Grayling Festival last year. It was great to catch up with him again at the Irish Spring Angling Show. He has very kindly shared one of his own wet Mayfly patterns with us.

For me I always favour the traditional mayfly patterns from Walkers mayfly nymph. Wets. Emergers. Egg laying or spent. Rod in hand or not just being by the water when mayfly are active is a joyful thing to see.

We don't have Mayfly hatches like we used to sadly.

@@lindsayiflyfish The combination of factors pesticides, along with other agricultural run off. Over extraction by water companies. Plus sewage issues, are all part of the problem. During the last twenty years the aquatic ecosystem has taken soo many hits. With many of the agencies that used to monitor and protect our waterways are gone or are stripped of their ability to take positive action. Now it seems as anglers are the only ones watching and reporting problems.

I noticed that you wind hackles in the opposite direction as the thread. What is the reason for that?

No reason, the hackle goes the way that it wants to sit.
