I live in Canada so sometimes we get the UK cover on a book here and others we get the USA for it, it's quite fun to have a mixture on my shelf! I think it's generally a toss up sometimes USA is better and sometimes UK. It's interesting because I've gone on vacation to both the US and UK before and everything in the UK is more playful almost more child like (in a nice cozy and heartwarming way) for packaging and just things in general, and the US is more matter of fact and straightforward and I think that shows in the covers too.

My personal take: Seven husbands-UK Hamnet-UK Dark Vanessa-US Luster-UK If I Had Your Face-UK Transcendent Kingdom-UK Writers and Lovers-US Actress-US Vanishing Half-US A Little Life-US You and Me on Vacation-UK They Both Die at the End-US Eleanor Oliphant-US Crying in H Mart-US The Hate U Give-US Clap When You Land-US Flat share-US Normal People-UK Daisy Jones-US Midnight Library-UK Malibu Rising-UK The Great Believers-US At night All Blood is Black-US Little Fires Everywhere-US So overall I prefer US covers. But that makes sense because I’m a graphic designer in the US. US and UK have different design trends overall.

Hey Ciara! There is another book with a super similar cover to If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha at 10:06, the book is Ghost Forest by Pik-Shuen Fung!

I really loved this video and I was just wondering recently what the differences were between the UK and US covers. This was so entertaining and perfect timing.

We did this at our last book club, it's actuallly quite fun, and then for the books we hadn't read, we tried to guess what it was about. The Hand is symbolic to the story 'at night all blood is black'

I love the UK cover of Eleanor Oliphant, it's the one I own, and I love that the cover is almost a spoiler but still I was so clueless when I read it. :D

In Malibu Rising, the four siblings surf together throughout their lives, so after reading it, that cover evokes sibling bond and not people on vacation. But the UK cover is still prettier!

Ahh that makes sense! But agreed - U.K. one wins on prettiness!

My takeaway: when I design my book cover, pink tones, no faces ;-)

I feel like the UK has more consistently good book covers, but here in the US it feels like publishers don't really care all that much and don't give the graphic designers like any guidance at all so the designers are just shooting in the dark and occasionally strike book cover gold

Sometimes I don’t mind stickers on books but other times I wish I could peel it off‼️When it comes to Hamnet the portrait cover is my favorite, because it captures how the line is blurred between history and fiction. Ps: I finished We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This, it was the perfect combination of cynicism and sweetness‼️ I got 5 chapters and 46 pages to go in Unbirthday it’s zany and brilliant‼️

I am in the US and sought out and ordered the UK cover of A Little Life because I despised the US cover. Later I found out that the picture on the US cover was from a 1969 photo collection by Peter Hujar of men having orgasms. I'm so glad I have the UK cover for this book. Now I need to read the darn thing.😁. Thanks for all the great content! I so enjoy your videos!

I liked the US covers more.The fact Sarah had an insider's view on the material seemed to sway her in a particular direction (and probably influenced you).😂Did you ever see the movie Pretty In Pink?😁

What is interesting is I’m in the US and always think I like the UK covers better - I do make purchases from Waterstones a few times a year, but based on the titles chosen I did like US covers more than the UK, while you generally liked UK covers better. Which leads me to believe the publishers know their demographics.
@Jeramie262 жыл бұрын
I don’t like faces in the book as well. Or when the book cover becomes a movie/ TV kind poster. I’ve seen a lot of that. But, hands down UK is the best for me when it comes to book cover. Well I think it depends on how they wanted it based on the story and not on the title.

Yeah, I know what you mean about movie cover books! There are a couple that I like but mostly it seems like a waste of a good book cover opportunity!

This because you haven't seen the italian versions of most UK/USA books. We NEVER keep the original cover or even a title that has something to do with it
