I loved your spooky/autumnal recs! I would recommend you, if you haven't read it yet, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. Definitely my favorite Bronte novel, and it has a lot of the autumnal vibes you're looking for!

I really recommend you reading "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It's perfect this time of year and I thunk you'd LOVE it ! (Also I'd love to hear your take on it!) 🍂 Thank you for being my number one inspiration this Autumn

catching up on all your videos, been quite busy this week ! but so happy to be able to finally catch up. after watching this video my TBR list is definitely longer... i'm really bad at reading "classics", for whatever reason, i'm always lazy about it haha You did mention two books that have been on my TBR for ages (frankenstein & dr jekyll), had never heard of jamaican inn (shocker) so defo added that one to the list. One classic that I'd defo reccomend for you is the shadow of the wind, it's from a spanish writer and it's so good. It was a compulsory read for us in high school and i super enjoyed it. I'd say It is also one of my favorite "classics" to read around this time, spooky spooky and no matter how many times I read it, it always creeps me out. Lovecraft as well.

You should read the original 1818 text of "Frankenstein" (if you haven't yet 😉), it's quite different, feels much less edited! (Because Percy had a heavy hand in Mary's final manuscript.)

I love reading seasonally! Especially in the fall. Among classics, I think Wuthering Heights and Oliver Twist are wonderfully autumnal. And to me, Frankenstein is also very winter-friendly!!!

Thx Ciara - really liked the discussion of duality in Frankenstein. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dorian Grey. Since Fight Club it's become typical to talk about it in a very literal sense. Clearly the concept has been around a long time. Maybe I would add Richard III, which not only is something everyone should read, but there are some excellent adaptations of it.

Lovely! I stumbled upon your channel because of the Gilmore Girls readathon and I enjoy your videos so much! Loved this list. It's been a while since I read some of those. Thinking of re-reading Frankenstein now. :D Haven't read Jamaica Inn yet but Daphne du Maurier's short story collections Don't Look Now and The Birds are perfect for autumn! Liked Rebecca as well. I think you may enjoy Ray Bradbury's Halloween Tree and The October Country this time of year. His writing instantly transports you into the autumnal atmosphere and setting. "October Country... that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and mid-nights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun. That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain..."

I love your recommendations so much! I feel set up for fall reading. Reading the crucible I had a slightly different takeaway. For me it speaks not so much on human nature and more on the corruption of power and impunity. Thanks for the recommendations!

Your descriptions and thoughts for these books are SO GOOD! So well-said! I'm currently reading The Bird's Nest by Shirley Jackson! Only a chapter into it, though, so it's too soon to say anything on it now. I read The Haunting of Hill House this past summer as well as reread We Have Always Lived In The Castle. I love both, but I prefer Hill House. I absolutely love Jackson's writing and the subtext of her stories! There's always so much to explore, analyze, and think about. Okay, well, I say, "always," only having read two of her books but I'm assuming it applies to her work overall, lol.

Yess I loved how much you hyped Frankenstein! I absolutely love the themes explored in it. I also get so annoyed when people refer the creature as ‘Frankenstein’! And I agree, I think that the monster of the book is really Victor.

I was waiting for October to read Dracula and Frankenstein and I didn’t know which to start reading first but now I think I I’ll go with Frankenstein! And I might as well just buy the Haunting of Hill House because I loved the series and wanted the book ever since, so I guess it would be a good time to buy it and read it once and for all 😂

I would say when you read Dracula, lower your expectations. At best it’s an alright book, but it has that famous reputation, though I wonder how many of those people have actually read the book.
@booksinbed4 жыл бұрын
Wow! I think Dracula is an excellent read and perfect for the season. I personally like it as much as Frankenstein. They’re similar in that pop culture depictions have skewed our expectations of the originals. As with any book, your mileage may vary, I guess!

Ahhhh I’m guilty of calling the monster “Frankenstein” 🙈😶 Haha but only because I hate not having a name for him, and I hate calling him the monster 🙁 Because like you said, Victor is the true monster. Basically, we need a name for the creature 🙁

I love reading Frankenstein for this season! The last time I read it was for my lit class in undergrad, and the professor was an old rich lady who, instead of facilitating a juicy convo, only asked the class "did you like the book?/ who is your favorite character?/etc." We got nowhere loool
