Fun fact: Felipe Paulino, the kid who got shot in the foot and then was spared, was REALLY scared of Leandro Firmino (Lil' Zé). Leandro used to scare him in the backstages, always acting tough around him, never engaging in a nice conversation, they couldn't even have lunch together. That poor kid's terror face was actually real, which also made him act flawlessly like if he did get shot for real. He got so traumatized, that he said in an interview that he could only watch that scene 10 years later, when he turned 18.

Some curiosities about the film, 90% of the cast are not professional actors, they are residents of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro who passed tests to specifically shoot this movie. The actors received little more than 1 Brazilian minimum wage for their work, with the exception of the few professional actors. Some actors already had criminal records and after the movie, without getting new opportunities returned to crime and some were arrested a few times. The movie received four Óscar nominations. City of God is the second most watched non-English language movie in the world, behind only Intouchables.

A very interesting aspect of the movie, which often goes unnoticed even by Brazilians themselves, is the mystical nature of the film. Lil' Dice becomes Lil' Ze due to a "baptism" he receives from a mystic man, along with a necklace of beads that the mystic claims will protect him from everything, but that he must not "fornicate" while wearing it. However, he violates this by raping Knockout Ned's girlfriend while wearing the necklace, which could be seen as the potential "reason" for his eventual death. :D

An interesting story to this: "Knockout Ned" is not technically the literal translation. In Portuguese, the name is "Mané Galinha," or literally, "Chicken Manny." The word "Chicken" has a different connotation in Brazil - in this case, it refers to being a ladies' man. But they felt like American audiences wouldn't understand the references, so they changed it.

This movie is incredible in several ways... I'll try to list why it's so amazing. First: Most of the actors, including the main villain, were not actors but residents of the real City of God community, which the movie portrays the origins of. Second: The editing, sound mixing, cinematography, and editing of this film are simply fantastic. Third: The movie was responsible for launching the careers of several artists, such as actress Alice Braga, who later appeared in the movie I Am Legend with Will Smith. Fourth: The film portrays violence and the cruel essence of human beings in a unique way. What is incredible about this film is also unjust. It should have won numerous awards at the Academy... At the time it tried to compete in the Foreign Language Film category, the Oscar jurors and critics were a bunch of assholes who simply ignored a film if it depicted any type of violence explicitly. The following year, after much criticism of this type of jury and the film's international success, it returned to the Oscars and was nominated for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography... Unfortunately, it was up against The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King... and of course, it didn't win any... 😐

Wow, I had forgotten what this movie was like. At the time it was released, I was still a child and even though I watched it as a family on TV in the living room, I thought it was too intense for me. I didn't get to watch it all, because I was afraid of the scenes. As I was born in Rio de Janeiro, I know how dangerous this state is. someone made a documentary about this movie, interviewing the child actors 10-15 years later. and the kids were paid next to nothing to be in this movie. its easily in the top 100 movies of all time. but if you watch that documentary, it's heartbreaking.

Hi guys, i'm from Brazil congratulation for react One of the best if not the best Brazilian film, what differentiates "City Of God" from Elite Squad is exactly that the narrative, the story is told from the point of view of a person who lives inside the favela and goes through all the difficulties , while the Tropa de Elite is from the point of view of a police officer in Rio de Janeiro I cannot say, but here in São Paulo in the State where I live most of the police are part of the "Middle Class" and the police were created to protect the State, and the State are the Elites. How are you going to control 2 million people inside a favela? ... with Violence.. I recommend you a documentary called "Noticias de uma Guerra Particular" shows the reality of this country documentary was recorded in 1997 but it is sad to say that reality remains the same

For foreign people who don't know, like it was said at the end the movie is based on an real story and all of the characters are real people with real events that happened in the Brazilian Slum City of God(some facts romanticized obviously, not everything is true) but Lil' Zé was real, his real name was José Eduardo Barreto Conceição, Carrot is based on one of Lil' Zé's Rival, His still alive today and is one of the only survirors, his name is Ailton Batata.

This is the life of young black people today too, in fact the violence rates have increased since the time of the film. Most of the boys I knew in childhood in a favela in Salvador (Bahia) died this way... Much of this could be avoided with the legalization of some drugs, and changes in public safety policy.
