About the movie, there are many real characters and a lot of real elements, but the way they connect them was kind of invented to fit better into the movie. To put some context about how it starts: In the early 1960s, people fled the famine that occurred in northeastern Brazil (one of the rare existing data shows 500,000 people dying of hunger in 2 years). They went mainly to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. As the cities did not have space for them, they built their houses themselves with scrap wood and in an environmentally protected area due to the risk of environmental disaster. The government didn't care because Brazil (due to the cold war) was in a dictatorship (1964-1988) to kill communists. City of god is about 60's and 70's and then, elite squad 1 is 90's and elite squad 2 is 2010's.

if your wish kinda a timeline update elite squad would be my recommendation. but while City of God leans more towards a dramatization of real events with testimony and interviews with related people (including Lil Z's mother) Elite Squad has more fabricated characters, still based on real events and in special an autobiography of someone that occupied the same position as the MC(commander of special OPeratios Batalion) to have a more "inside view" important remember that brazil is a country of continental proportions and while broad cultural themes are overral familiar the specifics are a zoom in in a very especific part of the city off Rio de Janeiro not evem the city as whole, on this aspect elite squad has is more broad but still focused on the same situation trought a diferent pov and elite squad 2 gets evem broader abording some of the thational scale and underline culture problems.

The horrifying thing about Lil Ze is that *on occasion* he shows a human side; he doesn't shoot Angelica, even though he tells her "this is your fault" right there at Benny's corpse - he easily could, he shoots the air instead. He then gifts the photo-camera to Rocket, even explicitly remembering Benny wanted Rocket to have it. In my opinion, these *teeny* moments of humanity is what makes someone like Lil Ze so scary; they aren't aliens, monsters, creatures of our imagination - they are actual humans!

Now you have to watch Tropa de Elite 1 and 2 (I think the english title is Elite Squad). Both amazing movies, just toooo gooood!! This movie is so real that the director moved away from Brazil to the US because of threats (the stories told were to real that he might knew to mutch)... Yes, its true. Its the same director and main actor From Netflix's Narcos.

Plot twist: none of them were actors, just regular ppl who received coaching technics, the director wanted it more real as possible

As a film major this is the first movie that I had to study that really clocked me into the art of storytelling

the movie looses a lot with the translation to be honest, the amount of slangs and expressions used is insane, like 85% of the phrases are regional expressions of Brazil and/or Rio de Janeiro. for example, in 12:23 he literally talks about waking up with the mouth full of ants which is an expression for dying but it doesn't translate well to english

Knockout Ned original name is Mane Galinha. Galinha means chicken. You guys need to do Elite Squad next.

32:35 Good question. For this movie they hired Fatima Toledo, a very famous and controversial acting coach in Brasil. A lot of actors that worked with her acused her of physical and mental abuse. She is known for her nasty methods to get what she wants out of an actor, may them be kids or adults. She worked with the actors in Elite Squad as well.

Actually, Knockout Ned's actor, is a hell of a singer, you guys should look him up, Seu Jorge is his name.

Awesome reaction but can we stop being soooo squeamish when the violence happens. I know everyone is different but it sometimes seems WAAAAAYYYY to forced
