If you watched the behind the scenes on the making of this derailment, the two locos were bound for the smelter's torch; they were bought and modified to suit the movie. Better than being cut up in my opinion.

Most folks assume that because a loco is in a lashup that it is a functioning unit. I don't recall if I saw exhaust from all the locos when I saw the film, but we hauled quite a few dead locos in from other areas of the country. One that I vividly recall was one of our Soo SD locos that, for reasons unknown, sat dead in a yard in Kentucky so long that when it arrived at our shop it needed a lot of attention before the prime mover could be turned over (batts dead, water was drained, etc)

I work for Norfolk southern is did you notice the engine go into 2 facing point switches. It doesn't look like a derail is there unless they did movie magic on it. The engines made it fine on the first switch but when it hits the 2 one it derails. Maybe the switch was gaped so it could derail. ( Commonly known as a run threw switch). There was a derail further down the track.

My fav loco is the SD-40-2, they have the best ride and great amenities. I suppose like other groups of aging locos they will be phased out, but you never know. The yard I work at in St. Paul, MN still had some GP9s from the 1950's still on the roster in 1998, although they were in tough shape they still worked and were used for local jobs. Another thought, sometimes locos will be transported to other yards that are in need of power, I once saw 6 SD units pulling empty coal hoppers, go figure.

Yes, also if you look close in this you can see cables. In other videos I've done you can see the "thing" they built on the second locomotive. Combination of being pushed up from the bottom and being pulled over from the upper side.
@JRNipper12 жыл бұрын
That is amazing, they were very fortunate! The yard I worked at in St. Paul, MN is where a BN freight crashed when it lost its brakes while coming down the Great Northern Hill. The switches are computer controlled and could not be manually operated, so the runaway entered our yard blowing through switches and curves made for a top speed of 15 MPH, and the runaway was going 50, it never derailed until it hit the Ford Hauler head-on. See it here on YT, search "Saint Paul, Minnesota Train Crash"

@tigermki Hollywood. I know no other way of explaining it. If you look close here, or in the movie you might catch the filming error of this wreck. Where they flipped these two "tin cans on wheels" is in one place. They then lifted them up, and moved them about 150 feet back. Then they blew them up.
@mytfy18 жыл бұрын
Why was this presentation in "freeze frame"? When you look at it closely, the people observing are in no rush to move as if they already know what the outcome will be. lol
@pitt1522013 жыл бұрын
@tigermki First this is a movie, second trains do explode sometimes when they derail, just like when a plane crashes and all the fuel leaks out, any kind of spark will set it off. Depends on what cars of the train derail, and whats inside of them too. When the train derailed outside of Emporium, PA almost 10 yrs ago, that was just toxic chemicals. No fuel....no boom.
@westfolk15 жыл бұрын
Not abandoned track. It is former NS trackage. Now owned by WNY&P. It sees regular traffic for the Driftwood turn. Here in this location they did load coal cars up until a little while ago. So, the siding rails don't get that much use any more.

We still use GP 35's. One of which is probably our best switching engine that we have. Loads up almost instantly. But they are in tough shape. Two of which we have leased from BNSF that we have to maintain. Our beloved 3635, short of no AC, that thing can haul 2500 tons on it's own and our short line is suffering because of it. Other than that we are stuck with former AMTRAK mother and slugs. Talk about useless, damn things constantly going down for one reason or another.

you know what the single engineer who took this train out should have done: grabbed a younger guy to come with him - then when the engineer got his speed matched with the runaway train and the coupling made, even badly, the younger guy could have stepped across to the runaway train, climbed up in the cab, and shut it off.
@Elfnetdesigns8 жыл бұрын
Or when they coupled to the tail of the train all they had to do was put the newly attached locos in idel and have the kid release the air line valve on the last hopper car.. Loss of pressure puts the whole train into emergency stop.

@tigermki The train has a full tank of highly combustable Diesel fuel used to power the locomotive. After derailing at say, a minimum of 45mph, a spark ignites the fuel in the dual locomotive causing the tanks to explode.

OK on the GP35s, another decent GM product. Our shop was strickly GM, the mechanics and electricians LOVED them. When G.E. brought in one of their new 4400 AC locos, I recall one of our most experienced electricians stepping off of it muttering: "GE should have stuck to making light bulbs." I guess that says it all. We got rid of all our GE locos many years ago, and for good reason, they just didn't hold up as well as the GMs did, and the proof is in those 60 year-old GP9s still running yet.
@AndrewNeilFalconer14 жыл бұрын

If I recall, I think all in the consit where operating. Even then with AC traction, and 4300/4000 HP on the point, I still should have been able to start out in notch 3-4 (if not lower, but then again I am guessing, and I am just a foamer so I do not know). I agree there where several errors, however it was still entertaining. Too bad about Crazy 8's though, it belongs in a muesem. Being a conductor - what is your favorite all time locomotive, and will the SD40 (group) ever die?
@LoganisTrainBoy112 жыл бұрын
6 of the 13 railroaders I talked to have had runaways. Lost there air in all happened in between notch 3-6 and all managed to stop there trains within 3 miles. Their trains were anywhere in between .8-1.4 miles long. And the true story of this movie happened on CSX the train went a max of 50 so MPH and with just simple dynamic breaking they slowed it enough to get a man aboard. So at 70 it wouldnt be as hard as it was in the movie to stop.

@CimarronWestfolk Boy,I'm puzzled with the prop thing. That's a lot of detail that seems unnecessary to include to fool most people. Did they use loco parts like cabs , hoods etc.? It would've been easier than mocking up from scratch. Someone said cables pulled it over, but it looks like a light stand with cables that was hit. Or maybe a impact board to trigger hydraulics. The cyinders push down on bars that slide along the track to jack it over, right? Altogether real-looking!

@junkdeal Yes they did put some time in building these. They worked at it for a few weeks. Why I have no idea. But you have to admit they do look real. As I understand the workings of flipping them over. The hydraulics started the flip on the first unit. Then the cables pulled the second unit up with it and then the both of them flipped on over. If you've seen the trailer for the movie and the quick glimspe of this scene you'd never guess what it really looked like when they did it.
