Not the umpires' fault. This was a call made in New York. They wrote this rule so poorly when it first came out that there was only one call to make, given the criteria, and this was it. Correct call, terrible rule. Redmond had to get himself thrown out on principle, as any manager would have done.

To MLB's credit they did eventually release a memo that season that said something to the extent of: "The Posey Rule should not be used as a technicality to get a free run in cases where the runner is out by a wide margin." Basically saying that if the catcher blocking the plate doesn't actually impact the result of the play you can't ask for the "Posey Rule" to get a free run handed to you.

Clearly I do. He can block the plate only when he has the ball. However, he was blocking the plate before he had the ball and the throw did not pull him into that position. According to the rule, he is safe. Hence the people who made the rule with the rulebook directly in front of them watching the review calling the runner safe due to the catcher violating rule 7.08. The catcher does not get to block the plate and wait for the ball to get to him, receive the ball, and then claim he already had the ball as a reason for blocking the plate.
@cinci4life116
@cinci4life116 6 жыл бұрын
The overturn to safe was the correct call and not saying this just because i'm a Reds fan. The important part of the play is that the throw is coming from right field and basically parallel to the first base line. A throw from that angle has no possibility of forcing the catcher to move into the basepath to catch it. If you pause at around 2:13 or 2:14 you see the catcher is already blocking the basepath and the ball is just going by the player between the mound and 1st base. The catcher has his feet 3 to 4 feet apart which is a clear attempt to get over quicker but also in an illegal position. He could have put his left foot at the top of the batters box putting him in a legal position and still caught the ball. I know lots of people don't like it but in the end they got it right.

Used to like Tommy Hutton as an announcer, but now that he's been fired for more than a season, kinda glad he's gone. I think Rich Waltz gets a bad rap because when most people say the Marlins announcers are annoying they are referring to Hutton.
@evanhullinger2900
@evanhullinger2900 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Green your right about Hutton. He once was a great analyst and broadcaster. But alot of times like this one he would let his anger and emotions get the better of him. Even though that was a terrible call by New York. And as for Waltz he wasn't that bad, but alot of times during games he did sound a little bit annoying. And the Marlins fans i think had had enough of them. That is why both are out of the Marlins TV booth. And it is Paul Severino and Todd Hollinsworth doing the Marlins games on TV. It was just time for change.

"One thing Joe Torre told us in Los Angeles is that if the ball takes the catcher into the pathway of the runner, he's allowed to go get the ball." That's the key statement, I think. Mathis left a lane open up until he had to go get the ball. Either Joe Torre was mistaken or the rule was interpreted incorrectly here. Common sense didn't prevail here because the throw beat Cozart by a mile anyways.
@realtyranny3310
@realtyranny3310 7 жыл бұрын
Home plate ought to be treated like any other base. The reason you don't see collisions at second or third is simple. The fielder has to give the runner access to the base, catch the ball, then tag, usually a swipe tag. When this happens, the fielder is normally standing behind the base, in front of it, or near it in some way. Watch next time a catcher tries to throw out a steal attempt. The fielder doesn't plant both feet between the base and the runner, then try to hang onto the ball during the inevitable collision. The catcher knew the rule change, blocked the plate anyway, but the runner also knew the rule, chose to avoid the collision and rely on rule enforcement. The runner was right. MLB does not want these home plate collisions anymore.
@chrisbrandli4780
@chrisbrandli4780 5 жыл бұрын
No, the catcher did not "block the plate" he set up with most of the plate exposed until the throw brought him slightly up the baseline. He received the throw then waited for the runner. The runners path was in no way altered by the catcher, he was just toast. And you're perfectly allowed to block any other base once you receive the ball.
@Jwpro99
@Jwpro99 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbrandli4780 he did block the plate. Before he has the ball (frames as the ball is coming in) he is in the same foot position as when he turns to make the tag. This position is what causes those home plate collisions. It is a bad call but it’s an exact example of what the catcher is NOT supposed to do anymore according to the rules.

The problem about this call is that technically the call itself was correct in that Mathis was blocking the plate prior to receiving the ball or even moving in position to get the ball. The marlins broadcasters though were making a big deal over the lack of slide from Cozart, that is a moot point because regardless of slide/no slide, he did not have a lane to even try to slide to. Mathis was in technical violation of that rule. The rule though was poorly worded and implemented.

What does that announcer mean “why didn’t he slide?” Look at the play genius, how or where was he going to be to slide? That’s why they overturned the call. You can’t just block the plate and the running lane like that. It’s unofficially called “The Buster Posey Rule.” For when he blocked the plate and running lane and got trucked by the runner and broke his leg and 2 ligaments. It’s for player safety and that Mathis was in the way, exactly what you’re not supposed to do.

The announcer says this to prove the lack of effort from Cozart. Cozart realizes that he is out, but he should at least make an effort for it under the eyes of the announcer. It's obvious that if Cozart slides he's either a) look dumb or b) collide with Mathis, but the announcer says this to prove that Cozart knew that he was out from the second he saw the ball in Mathis' hand.
@Terribleathletes
@Terribleathletes 3 жыл бұрын
Actually you can, you need to go back and read rule 7.13 a little more carefully. It states that the catcher cannot block the plate if he is not in possession of the ball, but If the catcher is in possession of the ball or is in the process of catching the ball, he may block the plate. In this instance the catcher moved between the runner and the plate in order to catch the ball because the throw was off target, so he did nothing wrong according to the rule.

There is some plays where it ends up what it is..You don't give the runner to the plate..It arrived early and he tags him out..Or if way early, the runner has responsibility to be just tagged out if the decision wasn't the right to try to make it home..His decision to run to the plate was the wrong one..Or sometimes may have to run back to 3rd..Forget blocking the plate if its way early like that..That's the way the interpretation of the rules made should go..

One of those rare situations where neither side is wrong. Mike Winters made the correct call in the moment, and technically New York made the correct call to overrule him, based on the context of the rule and its interpretation. It's the rule itself that is awful, because it's so poorly written and such a rare scenario to even come up in the first place, means the finer details were never hashed out because it happens so infrequently in live play. This whole incident was setting precedent in a way. Both calls were ultimately right, but the rule itself needs to be rewritten for clarity so theres no confusion, or just removed entirely.

There is no “must slide” rule. The announcer is an absolute idiot. This is a rule change that definitely needs tweaked, but as the rule is currently written the call being overturned to runner safe is correct. The catcher is blocking the pathway without the ball, before the ball takes him farther left. I disagree with him being safe, but that’s the rule.

@@pumpkingreg6673 you're right. Prior to moving to receive the ball he had is left foot on the top corner of the plate. Which would give the runner most of the plate. Only moved in the pathway to receive the ball. And him being in the pathway in no way altered the way the runner ran home.

two things first why is the runner apparently required per the announcers to slide? Second point does the catcher actually tag the runner when the runner goes around instead of sliding? I don's see the catcher actually tagging the runner so how is he out not while I don't like either team never have never will fair is fair & no tag on the runner he's not out. I will add that I never see the runner actually tag the home plate though either but the catcher just runs off the field. In my days even in high school & college as catcher I always made sure there was a tag on the runner. I never did it hard or anything but I always made sure to place a tag unless of course I didn't have the ball in time for a play. The Runner never tags home plate so if the catcher had follow through as he should have & tag the runner to "confirm" the out before running into the dug out maybe things would have been different. Catcher had all that time to make sure the runner was out. Catcher never tags the runner who never touches home. amatuer hour to both catcher & runner. @1:20 & even better view @1:55 & watch frame by frame catcher never tags the runner & the runner never touches home.

Would the runner have been ruled out by New York had the catcher after catching the throw briefly moved out of the runner's path and then went to tag the runner? It looks like the catcher would have had time to do that. Or did he already mess it up by catching the ball where he did?
