The best managerial ejection I ever saw (in person too) was Earl Weaver vs. the Yankees. An Oriole was called out at second. Earl came charging out for the confrontation. A fan in the stands yelled, “Get back to the dugout, ya fuckin’ runt!” Earl flips his cap around so he can peck at the umpire. He then SITS DOWN on second base. The ump had no choice but to run him. So Earl let’s loose and, eventually, the ump turns and goes to brush off home plate with his back towards second. Earl makes a beeline for him like he was going to kick him in the ass. Instead, the moment the ump was through, Earl kicks dirt all over the dish. Priceless. Even Lou Pinella can’t top that one.

I’ve always wondered why it’s okay for an umpire to touch a player, but not the other way around. If you watch the heated arguments like in this video a second umpire shows up and gets between the player or manager and the ump who’s in the argument. That second umpire almost always ends up touching said player or manager trying to point them off of the field. Why is that okay? Don’t touch me should work equally from both sides. I would love to see an umpiring system where 6 umps are assigned to a particular game (actual selections made by the teams when umpiring crews are announced before the season starts). Each team would be allowed to pick 2. You’d still end up with 4 umpires on the field. Maybe you could use this system to determine whether or not umps stay in MLB or get demoted back to the minors. For example let’s say umpire A is selected to umpire 120 games in a season. Umpire B is selected to umpire in 22 games. Umpire A would stay in the majors while Umpire B would be demoted. Or alternatively the league could supply 6 umps for a game. If an argument erupts during the game, each team would have the opportunity to toss one ump each. You’d have to live with the replacement ump/(s) for the rest of the game. That way each team has an opportunity to an umpire who they feel is not making good calls. That would be pretty fun to watch a team manager storm out of the dugout and give the old heave-ho to a member of the Blue. Just knowing it could happen would be fun.
