In the backgrounds, it is only reversing during the Mad World chorus. During the verses, they are moving forward. This is my favorite version of this song, released with little pre-fanfare during the middle of the pandemic AND all the civil unrest in 2020. This song has never appeared on one of their albums, just this video and the single.

It may have been a favorite of a beautiful young woman I knew. She killed herself just about this song came out, as much a victim of the social isolation of the quarantine, and the year that followed. I'm glad to know that they haven't put it on an album. It's just too distressing, too mournful, however beautiful the arrangement, however achingly sung. But it reflects the mood in the depths of the pandemic.

You are talking about the wall of sound being the same which you just said. They also dropped everyone out when Mitch sang mad world and the pentaholics said we never knew we needed Matt and Mitch harmonizing. Matt is a bundle of joy. He brought a whole lot of sunshine to the band!!!

I was around when the original Tears For Fears version came out in the 80s, and it was a completely different tempo and feel to this version. I forget which band originally covered the TFF original, but it was re-born for another generation when Michael Andrews & Gary Jules teamed up to make a version of it for the movie "Donnie Darko". It would be cool to have Tears For Fears record a stripped-down (few instruments), more legato version of their song; I'd love to hear what they'd do with it in a different tempo. At any tempo, though, this is still on my (very long) list of favorite songs. The PTX version is masterful - well-blended as always, highlighting the swells and pulling back when it becomes something more like pleading or haunting. The video editor on this shows his insane skills - I can only imagine the number of hours put into coming up with the final version of this. As always, really glad I found your channel and loved your reaction to it. :)

I truly appreciate the way you dissect each video ... Pentatonix always has hidden gems in each song. Through vocal presentation or video presentation.... Every time listening to each of their songs, old or new, it's possible to hear, see or feel something new.... I'm here for it 😉

You are right about the blurred moving background representing the past. It's a reference to a movie that had this song in its soundtrack. Donnie Darko, which starts with Donnie receiving a book called The Philosophy of Time Travel. Great movie highly recommend.

They gave hauntingly beautiful rendition of this song. I only wish they had given Kevin a solo as they did with all of the other members of the group. He has a beautiful voice too! ( I don't know why that bothers me so much, but it does.)

I think we’ve all gotten spoiled with the times Kevin does solo that we get bummed when he doesn’t . Let’s face It, we’re spoiled! ☺️

I understand, Carol, but it makes me so much more happy when I hear him because it's less often. I've noticed he sings solos most often with Christian music, if that helps.

I'm not sure why, but I've been in my feelings today. Kinda on the downside, thinking about this past year and a half. It's been rough for sure. This song/reaction, helped me get out of my head a bit. The lyrics to the song, the words you spoke, the layers they put into the music.... it's what I needed. Any who, Thank you, again! Thanks for another good reaction. You've started listening twice to every video, so I wish you would feel freer to talk during the second one. _Mad World_ has an interesting history, and Pentatonix is not even doing a cover. They are doing a cover of a cover. It was originally written and sung by the duo Tears for Fears in 1982. Melodically the original was fast and poppy, with a Caribbean flair. I didn't like it the first time I heard it (after hearing modified versions first), but over time I have grown to appreciate and even like it. It's worth a listen even if you don't react to it. The 2001 movie _Donnie Darko_ used the song as its theme. They left the lyrics alone, but completely changed the melody to the slow and haunting one you just heard. The shadow-smear imagery in the background was likely inspired by the movie, with its themes of "what is real?" and alternate universes. Pentatonix' and most other modern covers are based on the movie version.

Avi left in 2017. We don't need to hear about your longing for him in every Pentatonix video. Seems disrespectful for no reason. Avi has his own KZbin channel which you can enjoy. He's moved on. @@CinaKhaledi That is a matter of opinion also. Matt is bass now. Why do you keep bringing up Avi and lamenting in so many reactions? It's disrespectful to Matt and the people who have accepted that Avi has moved on. It's your channel and you do you. I just wanted to you to know that your comments are coming off as disrespectful. I was a fan of your channel and a subscriber so I wanted to express my disappointment.
