Cincinnati Bengals Mini-Camp Thoughts | Bengals On The Brain Episode 92

In Episode 92 of Bengals On The Brain with Joe Goodberry, presented by First Star Logistics, we have much to discuss.
The Bengals have closed out mini-camp, and the countdown until the start of training camp in about six weeks is on. However, thanks to those from the media who post video clips from mini-camp practice, we look at some video clips as I give my thoughts on Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Mike Hilton, Trent Brown, Josh Newton, Dax Hill, Charlie Jones, and others.
We also discuss the latest Bengals news, including center Ted Karras's signing of a contract extension that will keep him in the lineup through the 2025 NFL season.

Great stuff Joe. Keep up the obsessive data-gathering, we are Cincinnati Bengals fans and enquiring minds want to know! It’s nice to see ADG in on sub-packages, I look forward to him building on his two interceptions vs. Lamar Jackson. It’s encouraging to see Dax making plays at CB, I think the whole Dax situation has caused me the most stress this offseason so that’s reassuring. I can’t be bothered to hunt down the videos as they get released a few at a time, so it’s great that you’ve collected them here, thanks!

Brown looked like a little kid warming up at pee wee football or the kid picking flowers in the outfield in little league. Wow he is freakin massive which made it that much funnier.

Yes I can’t wait to see Devonsha Maxwell in the pre season. He missed his rookie year last year. He played at Tennessee- Chattanooga so it’s a pretty small conference BUT he is the all time sack leader in that conference. He had like 38 or 39 sacks there in 4 years. I think he might be pretty good. Probably won’t make the final roaster this year unless he is just dominant in the pre season but he will be on the practice squad.

Ted Karras has been the best offensive lineman. This past year he had the highest grade. 75 I think or 76. Anyway this past year he was top 5 among centers in pass blocking and PFF has him as the number 8 center in the NFL this year. And the cool thing about Ted is year he is 31 which isn’t that old for a lineman but his first 3 years with the Patriots he wasn’t a starter and played sparingly his 4th year is when he was a full time starter so he doesn’t have as many miles in his body.

Actually Mike Gesicki isn’t 6’7’’. At the combine he measured at 6’5 1/2’’. So that’s a 1/2 ‘’ which I round up to 6’6’’. So he is 6’6’’ but he also has 34 1/8’’ arms.

This is also the last year on Jalen Davis deal. If Dax sticks at outside CB I think they train Turner to play the slot. Not sure if he did that at Michigan. Or maybe next year they just move Dax from outside to the slot and let Turner just redshirt this year and play backup. You know if the Bengals wanted a god damned Free safety why didn’t they draft one?! I could have told them that Dax Hill was an elite nickel and possibly and elite CB or SS but FS is just not something he did in college.

Newton is a dam good players and he went to my alma mater of ULM before going to TCU. I lived in the city that he is from for 12 years. Monroe, LA home of the ULM Warhawks. I like him he is a scrappy player but I don’t know if he has the speed to play on the outside. He ran a 4.51. Dax ran 4.38 CTB ran a 4.38 and DJ Turner ran a 4.26. Do you see what I’m talking about? What happens if Newton is guarding Tyrek Hill? That’s a TD every time. Hill ran a 4.29 but that was almost 10 years against I know he isn’t as fast now. Those 3 Hill, Turner and CTB can hang with anyone. Especially Turner. There won’t be a field DJ Turner steps on that he isn’t the fastest guy on it.

Yeah and Trent Brown is not 6’8’’ tall. He is 6’9’’ and his weight is anywhere between 355-380. I think 360-365 is what he should shoot for. He is the largest starting offensive lineman in the league and has been pretty much since he was drafted out Of Florida. The dude is fucking huge! Amarius Mims is 6’8’’ 340 and he said the first time he met Trent he was like “Dam Ok” lol. Mims is more muscular and more cut so they both look big but in a different way. Trent just has girth. Even more than Orlando and Mims is like solid he looks a lot more muscular but when you are these guys size is doesn’t fucking matter much. Orlando is one of the most unathletic tackles in the NFL and it just does t matter. What he lacks in that department he makes up for with size. Trent too but to a lesser extent but Trent is more athletic that Orlando is and Mims has both on his side. He is massive AND athletic as fuck.

I still think the Bengals should bring back Eli Apple. To use in an emergency. We know what he is and what he can do. Amazingly he is still just 28 years old. It feels like he has been In the league for 15 years. Pay him 3-4 mil a year on a 1 year deal. He knows the defense after playing in it for 2 years. We know he can start and we know we can win with him. The other CB options will be more expensive. Xavian Howard or Gilmore. You would get those guys if you wanted to get a starter. I don’t think we need a starter. Or there is Akello Witherspoon who was Chidobe Awuzies teammate at Colorado. He is good. 6’2’’ 195 lbs. he gives us a body type we don’t have and have t had since Tre Flowers left. Flowers is already on a team. Apple is 6’1’’ 200 pounds and has 4.40 speed. He is built like the perfect CB. 6’-6’2’’ 190-200 pounds. My ideal CB size is Apes size of 6’1’’ 200 lbs. and he has perfect speed. My ideal CB would have minimum 4.45 speed. Gotta be able to play on the outside against these fast WRs.
