"Cinderella" (Broadway Version): Ella Act II Transformation Costumes Explained

Knoxville High school presented "Cinderella" (Broadway Version) in March 2017. We constructed our own transformation costumes. Thanks. We were really making things up as we went. There are a lot more (and better) transformation costumes and ideas out there now . . but back when we were doing the show, it hadn't been available that long, and we were really making things up as we went.

Glad you enjoyed it. At the time we did the show there was not a whole lot of resources out there on making transformation dresses. I learned a lot, and if I were doing it again, would make some changes, but there was a lot of trial and error going on.

Our version of Cinderella has her transition from her Mother's dress, pieces torn away by the step-sisters, to the full ball gown. As a seamstress, I was struggling to figure out how the magic works. This really helps!

A lot of people thought this was supposed to be Disney's version of Cinderella, so maybe check out the dresses from other Cinderellas? (both on plays and movies) There's a lot of wonderful dresses (and transitions!) beyond the white in the animated movie and the blue one in the live action. (Anyways, props to everyone who made this, i was always annoyed by how poofy the other dresses' pouches were lmao)

The show is called "Cinderella: Broadway Version" when it is licensed by Rogers & Hammerstein. There are multiple versions of the "Cinderella" that can be licensed, including the "Enchanted Version" "Y2K" etc.

Wow! Thank you so much--I need to tackle a couple of transformation dresses this year. One option needs to be transitioned while the actor is lying down ("dead" on the floor and then comes up in heavenly white dress). Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe the snaps on top and maybe do the distraction somehow with another item on stage (a blanket used to cover her??).

The script in this version of "Cinderella" calls for the dress that Ella wears to the banquet to be gold. We chose to follow match the costumes to the version of the show we were presenting.

This was for the musical "Cinderella: Broadway Version". There are, I think, 4 different versions of Cinderella that can be licensed. In this version, both Cinderella and Prince Topher wear white to the ball. This is referenced in both dialogue and song lyrics. That is why we used white. If you are costuming the show, you can do it however you want, but, note this is not a Disney show.

Its should be noted even the original Disney animated ball gown was white/silver, but marketing went with a cheaper light blue dye for products that has since make everyone think her dress is blue. Until the live action remake went all out blue...again marketing. This whole 'this princess wears only this colour' is nuts. In the recent Broadway revival of The King And I, the costume designer had many frustrations choosing a color for Anna's ball gown because everyone would associate the color to a Disney princess dress 😂

The dialogue in the 2nd act of the show (Cinderella: Broadway version) specifically speaks to Ella wearing a dress of gold to the banquet. You can costume the show however you choose, we chose to follow the script.

Liz A but both the gold one and the blue one looks like belles... when she is in the village, she wears a outfit just like that too. Same with the gold one tho.

@@yuhuaguan6 We chose blue for her village dress because I happened to have a roll of blue fabric that I had picked up at a thrift store so we had LOTS of fabric to make trial versions and multiple dresses. THAT is the reason we chose blue :)
