So when she talks about “Into the woods” Cinderella. That movie is based off of the original Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella, and in the story she says “Shake and quiver, little tree, Throw gold and silver down to me.” She wears a gold and silver dress and her shoes are embroidered with silk and silver. I agree that I wouldn't have put it as last, but I can see what she is talking about when she says that they probably could have used a better material for the gold color. Personally I absolutely adore the songs more than anything and will choose Into the Woods over so many other things so many times. So the dress didn't really subtract for me. It was the setting and I think that was your point.
@eshbena4 жыл бұрын
I think it was put last partly because of the lack of structure. A ball gown needs to have crinolines or, at the very least, some petticoats. You should not clearly see the outline of the legs under the skirts, makes it look awkward, especially when they're dancing. The way the skirt flops listlessly when she sits was very off putting. If you are going to use limp fabrics, then you really need to put structure under them to give them some shape. The color was ... an interesting choice. If you're going for forest tones, then commit to that, if you're going for gold, commit to that. Don't waffle halfway between the two. All in all, it looks like a dress that too many people had input into and that no one person had a vision for.

What i also liked and she didn't mentioned was the shoes and how she lost it. Because this is the accurate way from the fairytale.. "3 nuts for Cinderella" dress - if you are interested in period fashion and go further than just 18th/17th century, you can tell that this movie was supposed to be set some time around the late 14th/ early 15th century in bohemia. I am not saying that its 100% accurate, but it gives me that vibe (although the collar could be lower). Also I think its more about the colour of the dress. If you know this movie, you can notice that Cinderella is wearing darker, more plain colours like grey and brown, but once she gets the magical chestnuts, every piece of fabric coming out of it is somehow lighter and colourful. Like her green hunting dress with 2 different stockings, pink ball gown and finally her wedding dress which I think is cherry on top in this film. I also love how Cinderella and the prince dont fall in love with each other right away, and how they tease each other.

I LOVE that you mention Czechoslovakian Cinderella adaptation! I watch the Czechoslovakian version every Christmas as it's a national tradition. I couldn't find many details about the dress, but the patterns are reminiscent of traditional folklore in Slovakia and Czechia. In the context of the movie, Cinderella here is very boyish and an excellent hunter making her seem more "rough" and skilled than other fairytale versions, so giving her a dress that seems girly not only with color but also in the movement of the fabric was a sign of her transformation and showing her more womanly side. It is excellent work by the costume designers as before she has a hunter dress and looked "like a man" and now she seems very delicate with floating dress. White color dresses are heavily featured in folklore, but pink is rarer giving it an exclusive feel. On a personal note, this movie is a stand-alone for me, and I never tried to compare it with other cinderella movies or adaptation. Generally, growing up in Slovakia, I can say that our film adaptations of many fairytales are more down to earth and incorporate less glammed up concept, as many of the fairytales comes from European folklore, also all of our characters have a lot of depth and females are generally strong characters. I appreciate more Hollywood-ish representation, but it somehow pale in comparison in my childhood mind (as I watch them very rarely now) it seems like there was so much going on for the protagonists. Maybe that's why the Ever After is another very popular version of Cinderella in Slovakia. Thank you for the video!

I think part of the reason people remember animated Cinderella's dress as being blue is because its tinted blue during the scenes where she is meant to be in shadow/dark. Like when she and the prince are alone before she runs off. But that is still my favorite dress. It has the advantage of being animated so you get all the sparkly elements every time she moves. Hi, I'm from the Czech Republic. Our Cinderella, which you finally rated as sixth in the ranking, is based on period drawings. The dress is from the Gothic period, so the 12th to 15th century. She has her hair uncovered because she's not married, but once she gets married, she'll have to wear her hair under a bonnet.
@beth12svist Жыл бұрын
The whole style of the film is more like 15th-16th century. A lot of the clothes at the court/ball are very late 15th-early 16th century in style. Cinderella's dress is more fantasy than anything, but with its high waist and simpler silhouette, it's definitely inspired by 15th century styles. And it makes a lot of sense to me as a stylistic choice, because that was a big period in Czech history, with a lot of change, unprecedented level of religious freedom (still limited, but definitely unprecedented), elected non-hereditary kings... The music at the ball also echoes that period to a degree, it's definitely part of what makes it work so well even if you're not consciously aware of it.
@Calucifer1310 ай бұрын
The period in which the movie is set is in between 1470 to 1490, likely 1480. The pink dress is NOT period, and the gowns at the ball are a mishmash of that period and maybe like 20 years later, but they are all still from the early Renaissance period. In England, for comparison, it would take place in the Wars of the Roses period, likely at the end of Margaret of Anjou´s and Henry VIth´s period.

I think they added butterflies to the dress of Cinderella (2015) because one of the gifts her father gave her that she keeps throughout the story is the paper butterfly. It's like a symbolic keepsake.

About that “dove“ in the 1973 czech film. I belive that dove at the back is not a dove at all but a phoenix (out of the ashes). Anyway it's not the dress we love. It's a Cinderella who is equal to the prince and can give him a hard time with a wink. He will never win a hunt again with her riding along him, after all, but he loves her regardless. At the Ball it's not Cinderella, my frinds and I celebrate btw. but little Rose. That acress stole the show.

But I also generally find the costumes of the film beautiful, and I love that she has a veil - it gets rid of the horrible "why can't the Prince remember her face that's so weird" fiasko. As fir the significance of her blue-silver-pink ballgown: She tells the owl that guard her sparce belongings that her father had said once she'd _ride to her first Ball like a Husar_ and that her mother had promise to sew her _a beautiful dancing dress with a veil and train and pink dancing shoes to go with it_ so basically the magic hazelnuts gave her the dress her dead mother had imagined for her when she was still alive.

The Czech version is classic. No one really thinks about it deeply since it's out Christmas movie they play every Christmas. It's really interesting story and movie too since...I really hate the love in first sigh cliché and Cinderella and prince have more time together to actually fall in love (I am talking about the hunt or whatever it was). I respect your opinion and agree that if you have the nostalgie to it, it's much more beautiful to you

“Into the Woods” was actually the most accurate of them all. They focused on the Grimm's original Cinderella tale. In the tale, the ball lasted 3 nights, and in each she received a different dress. The golden is very accurate considering the old illustration books. The Into the Woods version is more accurate than Disney version and all of them. (also, the stepsisters cut their toes to fit the crystal shoe, which actually happens in the original tale.)
@doctor-aesthetic2 жыл бұрын
Disney's is based on Perault's "The Glass Slipper" which predates Grimm by over a century. "Most accurate" my foot.
@patheticmortal3732 жыл бұрын
@@doctor-aesthetic and the glass was likely a mistranslation of a fur slipper. The French words are very similar to eachother.
@doctor-aesthetic2 жыл бұрын
@@patheticmortal373 It's a common argument, but a very weak one. The original story uses the text "pantoufles de verre" on three separate occasions. The other argument is that in being told the tale, Perrault misheard the storyteller, but even then, "vair" would not have been a common term in the time the story was transcribed. It was a word that had pretty much fallen out of use. It's possible that it was being used to suit the mythological feel of the story, but that's a question that will ultimately never be answered. All we know for sure is that in Perrault's text, he does indeed call them glass slippers.

Three nuts to Cinderella is hands down my favorite. I do think parts of it comes down to nostalgia, as this is a movie me and MANY others from Norway see every Christmas. Just a few notes from the absolutely beautiful melody of the movie is enough to give me the Christmas feeling. I have never been a big fan of pink, but that soft shade is really pretty not gonna lie. I've always found that dress so beautiful. I love how soft and flowy the veil and sleeves look, the hairdo and accessories fit so well, love the patterns on the dress fabric. I never noticed the bird motif on the dress, only the phoenix on her back.
@klaus11484 жыл бұрын
I think the only reason they have butterflies on the ball dress in 2015, is a reference to her mother. Butterfly’s are used quite a bit throughout the film though I’m not to sure why. Loved this video by the way! ❤️⭐️
@terezar8804 жыл бұрын
The thing about Three nuts for Cinderella is that I don't think the ballgown is supposed to be the best/grandest/prettiest one. That's the wedding dress at the end for the grand finale to complete her transformation into a princess. But the ballgown is still very pretty and flowy and is a great contrast to the lady of the house and her daughter, who are dressed in real tacky ensembles. The sheer layers then help to make her look like a ghost or mirage when she runs away, as if she was never real, while the prince goes bonkers trying to find her. Thinking about it, I haven't seen it in a while despite growing up with it. I should watch it this Christmas!

@@rocio8396 We've got a lot of fairytale movies, because it's been sort of a tradition to get a new one every (or every other) Christmas. The best ones are the older ones, however, so what I'd recommend is Pyšná princezna, Dvanáct měsíčků, Tři veteráni, Šíleně smutná princezna and Princ a večernice. (Not sure how hard it is to find subtitles in english for them...) I'm not much into Czech movies outside of fairytales, so can't recommend others, sadly.

@@rocio8396 Czech fairy tales/princess movies: "Pyšná princezna" (proud princess) - black-and-white but a great movie "Šíleně smutná princezna" (incredibly sad princess) - musical-ish, kind of sarcastic, very funny "Jak se budí princezny" (how to wake up a princess) - sleeping beauty, I really like it "Princezna se zlatou hvězdou na čele" (princess with a golden star on her forehead) - funny, the original rhymes "Byl jednou jeden král"/"sůl nad zlato" (once upon a time there was a king/salt is more precious than gold) - these are my personal favorites

Other movies: "Marečku, podejte mi pero" (Mark, hand me a pen) - communism influenced, but a great funny movie "Rebelové" (rebels) - musical, end of school themed, portrays the 1968 occupation "Pelíšky" (lairs/beds) - partly Christmas movie, partly 1968 occupation related movie, notorious quotes "Slunce, seno, jahody" (sun, hay, strawberries) - so dumb it's actually funny (Czech humor) "Vrchní, prchni" (waiter, duck out) - really good movie
