Reporter: Bob Johnson, Boston Globe. Two days ago, we ran a story about you giving your relief money back. Can you tell our readers why? Jim Braddock: I believe we live in a great country, a country that's great enough to help a man financially when he's in trouble. But lately, I've had some good fortune, and I'm back in the black. And I just thought I should return it.

The quote I heard from multiple sources was that Joe Louis said Braddock was the most COURAGEOUS (not toughest) man he ever fought. Rocky Marciano, who fought Joe Louis, was just as "tough" as Braddock. So were a few others. It was Braddock's COURAGE Joe Louis was so impressed with. Another thing, although this is based on a true story, to make the movie more dramatic and entertaining, they fictitiously villainized Max Baer. In real life, he felt terrible about the two men he killed in the ring. It may have taken his heart out of it to the extent that that was the reason why Braddock, the lesser fighter, was able to beat him when Baer didn't train the same or care as much about winning. Nonetheless, this and Raging Bull are, by far, the best boxing movies ever made - thanks to the great acting of Robert De Niro and Russell Crowe.

I love this movie. Max Baer wasn’t really the villain he was made out to be here, though. He felt horrible about his two opponents who died. If I remember correctly, he put the one guy’s kids through school. And fun fact, the actress who played Mike’s wife was James Braddock’s granddaughter. Her mother was little Rosie. She didn’t tell anyone until she actually got the part.

I noticed Ron Howard's directing stayed away from showing Max with his Star of David on the trunks. That was probably a good idea since this version of Max is dramatized and exaggerated like most Hollywood films. He actually did Max's memory Justice by not showing the Star of David since the film betrayed him as being a clownish bad guy. If you watch the fight on KZbin then you will see that Max was clowning within the ring

My absolute favourite scene from this movie is when Art Lasky punches the mouth guard out of Braddock's mouth. Lasky thinks he has Braddock. And Braddock's kids flash through his mind. He sees them at the soup line and remembers why he is actually fighting. And that the punch is nothing compared to the suffering of his children. Braddock just smiles back at Lasky. Lasky in that moment realizes that he cannot beat this man.

What a wonderful reaction. I bought this on video to show my parents. Dad had always been a boxing fan and remembered J. Braddock. He,,d even tried to get jobs on the docks in New York and was completely angry at the scenes in the movie showing this, saying to mum "That,s just what it was like! At least I didn,t have kids at the time, like most of those poor b******ds" What an uplifting, powerful movie.

I found out later that after Braddock won the title he didn't defend it. He went on a nation wide tour, making all the money he could putting on exhibition fights and shows. It wasn't until two years later when he had really no choice, he defended the title against Joe Louis. The fight should've gone to Max Schmeling, who had knocked out Louis before Louis fought Braddock. But the boxing commission didn't want Schmeling to get the fight because he was German and with Hitler in power in Germany, they were worried that if Schmeling won the title from Braddock, the Germans would hold on to it and wouldn't let it be defended anywhere but Germany. With the commission in a bind and realizing that Braddock would probably lose to Schmeling, they were forced to give the fight to Louis. Which they also didn't want to do, because Louis was black. Knowing this Braddock's management said they would give the fight to Louis, if Louis would give Braddock 10% of Louis' earnings for the rest of Louis' career. Louis knowing this was the only way he would ever get a title shot, agreed. Louis won the title, but he didn't see himself as champion, until he beat "that man" Schmeling. He gave Schmeling a shot at the title and knocked Schmeling out in the first round, breaking Schmeling's jaw in the first place. Making Louis an American hero for the entire country. He would defend the title 24 more times and due to his popularity, Louis made a lot of money. Ten percent of which went to Braddock.

People today need to watch this movie as so many in America don't realize what true poor during the Great Depression is. It doesn't matter what race you are white, black, etc. Everyone can under this movie. A man struggling to provide for his family and realize and be humble even enough to ask his friends for help. Then the scene that made me cry..after being hit so hard and then when he sees his klds, wife, home. etc knowing he has to fight for that gives him an endurance that cannot be beat. To tell the reporter what are you fighting for and he says, "Milk". People laugh, but truly this is sad and shows the determination of man struggling to provide. His wife being caring and worrying and not leaving but standing by his side. This is true love and good character. She may not agree, but she understands her husband is trying. This is a truly inspiring true story.

Devin, I’ve been meaning to write this. Yours is the only reaction to this film, and your reaction is genuine; your enthusiasm and heartfelt joy for the film is evident. My father boxed while in the army in the late 1950’s. He was a fan of the sport growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1930’s. He would listen to boxing matches on the radio. My father taught me how to hit the heavy bag (which was hanging in our basement) when I was 12. We watched all the great Ali/Foreman/Frazier fights on TV. I was always glad that my father was able to watch Mike Tyson in his prime in the mid to late 80’s. My father marveled at Tyson’s combination of speed, power and defensive skills. When “Cinderella Man” came out in the theaters, I told my father about it . “Oh yeah! The Bulldog of Bergen! Braddock was tough!” Thanks for bringing back some great memories, Devin.

The old bald man in Braddock's corner is legendary boxing trainer, Angelo Dundee. The one standing next to Braddock at 29:17. He trained the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and 14 other world champion fighters. He was special fight consultant for the movie and director Ron Howard surprised him when he put Angelo in the movie as Braddock's cut man.

Baer's right hand was so lethal, because before he started boxing he grew up working construction. His job was to swing sledgehammers and break up concrete. So all day he would be swinging sledges over his head and striking down. His right hand was his dominate hand so he got used to throwing it down that way and with so much power.

I went and googled 1930s dance marathons and was *SHOOKETH* at the desperate forms of entertainment some went to… and at the same time, how humiliating it would be for the couples dancing for weeks (with little to no sleep and even passing out on the dance floor) just to get food and shelter… and hope they win the grand prize of cash payout… Good reaction review. At the beginning of the movie Braddock has an injured (broken) right hand. He is not doing well in the ring because he will not take the needed time off to heal. Additionally, he had made a large investment into a Taxi Cab company looking to secure his winnings and provide for his family long-term. But the Cab company he invested in had problems and went out of business, so Braddock was basically broke. Which is why you see him living in such poor conditions at the beginning of the film. On the plus side, he gets a job on the docks which force him to use his left hand and arm more than he ever did before, so at the same time he is allowing his right hand to heal he is strengthening his left arm, which before had not been a particularly dangerous punching arm for Braddock. So when he finally returns to the ring his left cross and left hooks are far more damaging than the other fighters expected.

I hope to watch it with you man. I'd love to give a donation but I'm a disabled veteran and they don't give us squat to live on. Peace my brother.

This for me is every bit the equal of the original "Rocky" in terms of emotional impact. Made all the better by the fact that James J. Braddock was a real fighter. Plus, for me he's (almost) a 'local' fellow , though Bergen is north of me. He's still a Jersey 'legend'.

This is an amazing movie. The fight scenes were choreographed to follow the real fights. They are very realistic.

As always man! Love the fact your ability to let your tears go when needed real man!! I cannot imagine living during the depression! My grandparents did and I got to hear some amazing stories about those times and also have researched and studied on it. This country did a lot of huge things during those times that changed it in huge ways. Hoover damn, Golden Gate Bridge, state parks, highways, etc!!! But to do what he did at the time is inspiring for even now. Thank you sir!!!

Devin G: This movie is a true story except for one thing: They villainized Max Baer for dramatic effect. Max Baer Jr., who played Jethro in the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies, lived only a few miles from me in South Lake Tahoe for decades. On a local radio talk show, I heard him explain that opposite of in the movie, his dad, Max Baer, felt terrible about the 2 men he killed in the ring. Also, I know from real life and a taped interview, that Max Baer was very respectful of Jim Braddock. Max humbly said Braddock was very underrated before their fight. Max Baer was not the terrible villain they made him out to be for dramatic effect in this movie. Lastly, the images were reversed as if we were watching it in a mirror (left was right). It mattered in the boxing scenes. They weren't boxing as left-handers, they were right-handed fighters. As a former boxer, it made the fight scenes uncomfortable for me to see backward.

Great film, my favorite sports movie ever. Soo happy you reacted to this. Thanks man. Its amazing how abject poverty breeds some of the greatest boxers ever. During that era boxing was king, only baseball had a comparable audience. Fighters provided huge inspiration to people at a time where it was sorely needed. People pointed at these fighters to inspire their kids. Black people pointed at Ray Robinson and Joe Louis, Jewish immigrants pointed at Benny Leonard or Barney Ross, Mexican parents point at their proud line of ring warriors. They'd say "See him, he made it. If you work hard, you can make it to.

Russel Crowe didn't win because of a little controversy. If you ask me, he should have taken it all that year. James J. Braddock was a local hero from where I grew up. He went to the Catholic school in my town. The park he used to run through was later renamed James J. Braddock Park. I don't remember if they mention it in the end credits, but both him and his manager fought in WWII. He refused to fight Max Schmeling because of his Nazi ties (though that was all BS) because Joe Gould was Jewish. This man was a national hero. As someone who grew up in poverty and on the same streets as him, this movie hits me on so many levels. I really appreciate your reaction to this. You earned another follower, sir.

Probably my favorite boxer movie of all time! Russel Crowe is at the top of his game in this classic! My dad grew up during the Depression, so this movie hits home for me more than any other boxing film. P.S. You really should watch Danger Close: Battle of Long Tan!

Oh forgot; another good boxing movie is The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. It’s another true story about boxer Mickey Ward (Mark) and his brother Dicky (also a boxer) who got addicted to crack. It’s so good and Mickey ends up fighting again. Just a a good movie.

Interesting side note, Max Baer's son, Max Baer Jr. is a retired actor, he played Jethro on the 1962 t.v. show "The Beverly Hillbillies." He was furious about how they portrayed his Dad in Cinderella Man, making him out to be this knuckle dragging thug. He said that like Braddock, his Dad was a dedicated family man, who was just trying to put food on the table during the Great Depression. He also said of the two men who died after fighting his Dad, that the incident with the first man Frankie Campbell, who died from a detached brain stem, shook his Father badly, he visited him in the hospital before he died and even apologized to Campbell's wife for what happened and she forgave him saying that "it could just as easily be him laying there." Baer Jr. said that his Dad had terrible nightmares over the incident for the rest of his life. The second boxer who died after that "little nothing jab" in his next fight ended up not being Baer's fault since the autopsy showed that the guy, Ernie Schaaf, had been suffering from swelling of the brain from a case of both meningitis as well as the flu. To quote Max Baer Jr. "My father cried about what happened to Frankie Campbell. He had nightmares. In reality, my father was one of the kindest, gentlest men you would ever hope to meet. He treated boxing the way today's professional wrestlers do wrestling: part sport, mostly showmanship. He never deliberately hurt anyone."

Devin, I've watched enough of your reactions to realize you're one of the best movie reactors out there. So I had to sub. Based on your comments after this great movie, especially regarding a wife's support for her husband, I have a suggestion for you that I think fits right in with what you said. It's a true story starring Russell Crowe once again, called A Beautiful Mind. It highlights the adult life of a gifted man named John Nash. I'd love to see your reaction to it. Keep up the great work!
