The amazing thing about Stallone's writing on Rocky is that every character is quite nuanced. I mean even Paulie despite being very unlikeable has a rather sad side of a very unhappy guy. Tony the loan shark is interesting for actually having not ulterior motives in his interactions with Rocky. You get the impression he actually likes Rocky and wants the best for him. It is subtle strongly written characters.
@MrLovegrove2 жыл бұрын
I always wonder how no one ever picks up on that. They all see Tony Gazzo and apparently think, "Loan shark equals scumbag". Obviously it's not the nicest profession to be in, but Gazzo is the only person besides Adrian who always supports Rocky. Who always believes Rocky. Who treats him the same way when he was a nobody as he does when he's the champ. I mean, he gives him today's equivalent of about 3 grand for his date with Adrian/training expenses. And never asks for anything back. I love that character.
@stropheum2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. That's why I loved Rocky, the writing in it is so real. I loved paulie, the loan shark, and micky the most out of the supporting characters, because they're all pretty scummy people, and they all take advantage of Rocky at times in their own way, but they also love him and support him when he really needs it

@@MrLovegrove It is a dynamic in low income neighborhoods in a lot of places that certain types of criminals we are meant to see as black and white good guy/bad guy light are often kind of grey. Loan sharks for a long time were the only access to loans a lot of people had. Banks, still to this day, require a lot access to capital that low income people lack. The down side is, of course, that they employ very rough methods of extracting payments. Honestly though if it compares the lengths debt collectors have gone at me for to get student loan payments, I might prefer a broken thumb to 500 letters and 1000 phone calls...

Great characters! and please correct me if I'm wrong but Paulie is also a Marine veteran judging by the pictures of him wearing an uniform(12:48), and I have never heard anyone addressing that when talking about his backstory.
@MrAdamloring19852 жыл бұрын
I always feel like Paulie is a bit misunderstood. I mean, yeah he’s an ass, but he’s a guy who’s beaten down by life. After he left the navy, something obviously happened to his parents, that made him have to take care of his sister, so he took a job he hates to pay bills. He is single, probably because Adrian couldn’t live with him, if he did, and he uses booze to cope with his life. Not saying it’s an excuse to be a jerk all the time, but it at least adds perspective into why he’s the way he is.

“Where’s your hat?” I love that. Went through hell and back. Beaten to a pulp and bloody; two inches away from total exhaustion and unconsciousness. First fighter to not only knock Creed to the mat but also go the distance with Creed; reaching Rocky’s only goal. Yet, through and after all that the first thing Rocky notices is that Adrian doesn’t have her hat.

The dog "Butkus" in the movie was Stallone's actual dog. He had to sell the dog during some lean times while getting "Rocky" going, but when the movie sold and was in production, he got the dog back and got him in the movie.
@KS-xk2so2 жыл бұрын
What I love about that story is Stallone, who at the time was so poor he had to sell his dog because he couldn't afford to feed him, and was sleeping in bus terminals, had big money offers for his script Rocky..... as long as he wasn't attached to be the lead. He held out and eventually settled for like 30k, as the studio had zero faith in him as an actor.... seems to have worked out ok lol

@glennwelsh97842 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so often people hear "Rocky" and they just assume it's some dick-swinging macho guy film, and I think that has a lot to do with Stallone's status as an action hero. So they're completely caught off-guard when they actually watch the movie.

It's no surprise that the most "popular" ones of the franchise are "Rocky III" and "Rocky IV", as those ones feel the most like a sports movie, and are relatively simple in terms Rocky's need to win. All the other ones feel more like character dramas first, than sports movies. That first "Rocky" is definitely more love-story than boxing movie.

However, when he got there about 20 minutes after the call, Spinell did not answer the door. The sort-of-padded gloves took a very long time to be adopted.

Great reaction, Arianna. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. And the thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown, but he wrote the script, and somehow not just convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage with short intercutting scenes in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout-with-music-montage.
