My Ancestor, Stephen Hopkins, came to Jamestown on a supply ship in 1609. The ship wrecked on Bermuda and had to be rebuilt. Then to Jamestown where he stayed from 1610 -1614. Went back to England because his wife had died and he had 3 children to care for. In 1620 took his family plus his new wife on the Mayflower to the New World.

Fantastic video about Jamestown and the original settlers. Many in my family live just across the river from there. Things were a lot different when I was young we could use that area freely to swim and picnic. Williamsburg streets were open to traffic. I don't remember any fee to get into the areas. I believe there was a fee to go in the courthouse, perhaps which we didn't do because we were poor then. I miss that time. It was a lot simpler and more fun. C'est la vie.

We lived in southern VA for 3 years. My kids attended elementary and middle school there. The history they learned was primarily VA history and field trips consisted of going to Jamestown. There’s so much history there it’s understandable why VA history was the focus. Recent studies have strongly indicated that the Roanoke colony was not destroyed by but assimilated into the native culture, in order to survive. There are people living in North Carolina who are genetic descendants of some of the Roanoke colonists. One group even retained the family name, Brown. They are related to the descendants of family members who stayed in England. Proof that some of the Roanoke colonists did survive, but gave up being English in order to survive.

My grandfather x9 Edward Ellis came to Jamestown in the early 1600's from Wales on a ship owned by Richard Carrill as an indentured servant. He made it through the tough times and ended up a land owner who passed his property down to his son Jeremiah Ellis who ended up owning a big portion of land and the Under Sheriff there. I'm almost certain he was a tobacco farmer. They were buried in the Jones/Ellis cemetery in Surrey county.

there were scots in the south since the late 1500s. the same with the english. then in 1607 the first 3 ships of the main english settlers arrived in 1607 and settled in jamestown, named after a scottish king. then more scots arrived probably welsh also. then the later ulster scots in the 1700s. many of these ulster scots families would still have been full scots having lived in ulster only a few years before migrating to america.

Indeed an outstanding video about the Jamestown colony !! My question is to Dr. Kelso, do you employ the use of metal detectors to find the metal objects that are beneath the surface at Jamestown ? I realize that there has always been friction between archaeologist's and metal detector users but I do feel that one compliments the other ! Please keep up your great work at Jamestown !
@Cinebar19977 жыл бұрын
Having shot there for 15 years, I can tell you that to my knowledge, metal detectors have never been used. Objects are found by painstakingly removing the soil bit by bit. Many things are found at different layers that are not metal, and sometimes more valuable in knowledge than metal objects. The outline of the fort which proved it had not all been covered by the James River, was discovered by post holes. Post holes are where the soil is stained by the decaying of the wood. Truly one of the most valuable discoveries at Jamestown.

I do not know about that. The Spanish had older ones. They had one in San Antonio about the same time of Port Royal. Spanish settlements in this hemisphere go back quite a ways.

I had read that the first colony jamestown, the ship,s captain left the people there but determined that he and his colony needed more supplies, he went back to england. But due to war and being sick he didn't get back for 3 years! So getting all that he needed he set sail for the settlement but forgot where it was. So he went to the wrong island.

Its odd how not much was said, even as a student myself years ago, or in my grand children's classes now, that there were established Spanish settlements in North America long before the English.
@James-dx8qb Жыл бұрын
I think the point is that the English/Brits were the egg from which the USA hatched, not Spain. If you all spoke Spanish and had won your independence and become a country by defeating Spain, then sure - those earlier settlements would be more significant than Jamestown etc..

I think it's sad that Roanoke hasn't been discovered or any resolution on what happened to the people there. Croatoan (from comment below) is gone never to be found. Isn't that a rather unsatisfying result. It is great though to have found Jamestown. So much information to get from doing this. Did the man who had the broken leg ever get identified? If so, who was he?
@Cinebar19975 жыл бұрын
The skeleton known as JR (for Jamestowne Rediscovery) did not have a broken leg. He had a musket ball in his leg, which would have caused him to bleed out quickly. He, like most remains at Jamestowne, has not been identified. But there is evidence that he may not be quite as old as thought, therefore indicating that he may not be one of the 1607 first arrivals. Cinebar has been working with the First Colony Foundation as they seek to find the original remains of Roanoke. Test sites have been explored on Roanoke Island and along the waterways of Eastern North Carolina. Artifacts of the time period have been found in the general area, some close to Indian settlements. While not proven, it does indicate, that the Colony make have broken up and scattered among the Indian settlements.
@tommurphree5630 Жыл бұрын
Actually there was a book written about Roanoke and the author unraveled the mystery of where did the original people at Roanoke go . Unfortunately , I moved in 2021 and lost the book and half of everything I owned . I all I can tell you is the book has been written . I was in a motorcycle wreck last summer and have some memory problems now , so can't tell you anymore . The author was able to find evidence that they were captured by Indians and some became slaves . You should be able to find the book . It was fascinating .

I'm surprised to see the young lady at 34:38 have her feet in the coffin near his head, would that be ok to do with a centuries old unearthed skeleton?
@Cinebar19975 жыл бұрын
First of all, there is no coffin. The reason they know it was a coffin burial is because of the soil stains forming the outline of the coffin. But, the coffin itself is long gone. The young lady, Jamie May is a seasoned archaeologist who was one of two who did the painstaking and tedious work of uncovering the skeleton. She was working with Dr. Doug Owsley, the world's leading forensic anthropologist, on the analysis of the skeleton. Examination of skeletons and artifacts in situ, requires close up work. It might surprise you that this cameraperson was also close up in the burial shooting, as well as many more burials on Jamestowne Island.

@Cinebar19974 жыл бұрын
That is true from a different perspective, one we don't disagree with, but this documentary is based on Cinebar's 15 year experience working on the archaeological dig at Jamestown and the stories the discovery tells. It documents the beginning of the America we know now, for better or worse. If you explore our other work, you will see that we have done many docs on the African American experience, and the Native American experience.

Who chose the use of the name “Indians”? Where has Roger Mudd been for years? I expect more.
@sherristaples7293 Жыл бұрын
The "name" Indians comes from Christopher Columbus because he believed until the day he died that he had found a route to India. Columbus is now recognized for the genocide of the Arawak tribe and the native people of the Caribbean. Cinebar worked with Roger Mudd over the years on a number of projects. He always insisted that the scripts be completely historically accurate. He was a brilliant man and a kind man, so wonderful to work with. He died in 2021 at 93.

I would like to personally (and properly) acknowledge and apologize to the Indigenous People, the Native Americans, such as the Powatan, for encroaching upon your land, terrorizing and bringing disease to your people. It’s very sad that there was so much ignorance and haste on the part of the English. Although I am Christian, In no way do I endorse or condone the way the First Nations people have been forced into a new religion and culture, lose their heritage and also their lives. My great, great, great great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee, and not once in my youth was I taught about my heritage on her side, aside from the biased and flawed American history books.
