@@revol148 The first scene of the movie shows the crew repairing the tank with a dead crewmember in it. Upon returning to the rally point, we learn that Fury is the only tank in their section that didn't get blown to hell. A crewman in another tank who they seem to know is so overcome with fear and shock at the carnage he has witnessed that he blows his own hand off with a grenade to get out of getting sent back into combat (though that was edited out ofthe final cut). As Fury rolls through the camp, trucks are loaded with dead soldiers. Nurses and corpsmen are dumping buckets of blood and used bandages outside a field hospital. The new guy's first job: sponge the blood and skin of the aforementioned dead crewman out of his crew station. Shortly after rolling out, the lead tank in the column cobbled together from the remnants of the otherwise wiped-out battalion gets hit with a Panzerfaust. The crew dies screaming, trapped inside the tank as it's engulfed in flames. Save for the TC, who managed to clamber out of the turret, fall to the ground, and spare himself any further agony by pulling a bullet through his own head. AAAAAAAND that just about covers the first 20 minutes. By the time the movie is over, the frightened FNG who joined the crew in the beginning is the only tanker featured in the whole movie to make it out alive due to a combination of luck, and a merciful young Wehrmacht soldier who pretends not to see him, sparing his life as he hides under the tank waiting for them to leave. It would appear that your snarky, "knowing," cynically clever assessment of this movie was in no way influenced or biased by having actually bothered to watch it. In my opinion, Fury does a REALLY good job of depicting what it was like to be a tanker in WW2. They do a really good job of showing what it was like to live that life, how you can just die without warning, have friends that are there one minute, gone the next, and showing the camaraderie that existed between tank crew members. That is what I feel Fury did really well. Unfortunately the combat scenes are very unrealistic, which is really unfortunate considering the potential the movie had, especially since it was using all real tanks, including the last fully functioning Tiger in the world, which has never been done before. I still love it, and still think it’s the best WW2 tank movie out there, but damn I wish it was more historically accurate.

One thing a lot of people Miss is that the Sherman's intended role was for what they're showing here. Taking out Machine Gun Nest and hardened positions. It was not intended to go toe-to-toe in tank battle. A lot of infantrymen came home because the Sherman did its job. And, especially after the wet ammo innovation, tank crew deaths were a fraction of infantry deaths. In many cases, the tank was disabled and the crew escaped and the tank was recovered and put back into service after repairs. It's very dramatic to show a Tiger tank in a defensive location destroying a tank and killing all the crew but it's not the reality.
@macmcleod11883 жыл бұрын
So I thought I should look it up since my memory is fuzzy and here's the quote "For the US they were incredibly low - 8% of tankers were killed vs 18% of Rifleman. You also have to remember this is at a later stage in the war, so the German Army is starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel in terms of manpower, plus all the experienced troops are over on the eastern front fighting the Russians, so the ones fighting the allies are either young and poorly trained, or simply not as battle hardened. In fact, after the victory over France, Western Europe became pretty much a relaxation location for German soldiers and officers, being assigned to duty in Western Europe before D-day was living the high life for a German soldier and/or officer, while the Eastern front became very much every soldier’s worst nightmare, to the point that such an assignment was seen and used, as a punishment.

Something that probably would've made this scene better is if they had one of the Shermans get hit, but not necessarily destroyed, by the Pak. It would've been more realistic, made the Germans an actual threat, and also show how often times in war, tanks don't just explode when they get hit. Often times, they just take damage and are abandoned by their crews. They would have stayed there and blasted the treelinie with everything they got, or called in an airstrike like in a Bridge to far. The infantry would never advanced like that with the tanks, standing behind a tank makes you a target for enemy fire especially if you know that they have anti tank guns. Band of brother shows how infantry would advance. The Germans also are portrayed pretty bad, they are entrenched in a good position, easily killed of a column of American vehicles, and now a machine gun would open fire on a tank before the PAK? Or they would just shoot on the tank not on the infantry behind it or the tank commanders and extra machine gunner standing on top of the tank? My grandfather told me something different about the braveness and the fighting skills from the allies. If the germans really fought like this they whould never have been able to make the war that long🤣

Advance, contact, call in artillery / airstrike, advance... that was allied (mainly US) tactics. Was efficient, but not so heroic like they wanted to be. Read Otto Carius book "Tigers in the mud" about the eastern front where he earned his merites. They accepted the soviets as brave fighters while he regarded the US as cowards and was very eager to tell them a lesson.

The one thing I never understood about this movie was why they'd use the kid as a substitute tank crewman. Sure he's a replacement and yeah maybe they were short on them but he was only technically combat arms, he was a bloody clerk. Surely throwing in anyone from an attached infantry unit would've been better.
@IOEUIE3 жыл бұрын
The new guys always get replaced in spots they need to fill, that's just how war goes, only the elites get that special treatment to get the best units
@dudoji853 жыл бұрын
Sony probably felt he adds more character development to the film since the common audience are all 'bloody clerks' and can relate to him
@hieug.rection19203 жыл бұрын
You don’t pull from infantry, they have their own jobs where they work in close teams. Clerks and admins, however, make perfect combat replacements. In Iraq, my 4th turret gunner was a random bulk fueler we snagged on a resupply. In Afghanistan, the mechanics got voluntold to replace my dismounts until replacements arrived. They tried to give me cooks but I didn’t want those retards in my truck.

Happened all the time in ww2. Tanks had to keep advancing into the fight. It was a numbers game. Training in the field was three shots in practice and congratulations your a new tank crew member. Lord have mercy.

My boat crew had a diesel mechanic that served in the sandbox. Submarine diesel generator, diesel truck engine... close enough. Better yet, one of the othe vets at the fire dept was a Medical Equipment Technician...did a tour in Iraq, pulling patrols with the infantry.

Well emplaced and concealed PaK 40's with the advantage of surprise couldn't hit a row of Sherman's at what would be considered point blank range.

Fresh conscripts are probably operating it. It's April 1945, literally days from the end. German army was near annihilation and when they drafted they took whoever they could. Besides, mistakes happen.

not only that but its kinda funny how first the MG42 opens up. Then its gone then one PaK opens up then thats gone.
