I think the key to "The Favorite" is sort of exactly as pointed out: The *presentation* of "old fashioned" as "modern"... because, at the time, it *was*. It's an excellent way to show perhaps the subtext to events, speech patterns, and fashions we today see as stodgy and dated. It sort of like how Shakespeare was the Stephen King of his time; or perhaps a Steven Spielberg or Spike Lee - common entertainment for the common man; not in any way the "boring" and "difficult" writer tons of school children view him today. This was reality... and reality, human reality, hasn't really changed much at all in millennia. Only our perception of it changes.
@giascle2 жыл бұрын
I've always thought Stephen King is the perfect analogue to Shakespeare. In addition to being common entertainment for the common man as you said, they both have (had) absolutely ridiculous output, lots of it utterly brilliant, but some of it downright terrible. After King's death, conspiracies will surely arise that there's no way a single man wrote hundreds of classic books and short stories - tons of which have been adapted to other mediums - or that the same man responsible for The Shawshank Redemption is also responsible for Dreamcatcher.

Anne *was* Queen of Scotland, but she was also queen of England, Ireland, and (according to her at least) France. There's a big statue of her outside St. Paul's Cathedral in London with allegorical figures around the base representing her dominions: Britannia, Ireland, France, and America. Anne never visited Scotland; when George IV did so in 1822, it had been 171 years since the last reigning British monarch visited the country.

I love a good biopic. I understand going in, the film's telling of life of the subject will be condensed and 'tweaked' to fit both the general narrative and the time frame. But, if told well; it can give a look into the essence of the subject; depicting the surrounding influences that made the person's life worth the telling. Now, if I want to see the closest one can come to understanding the realities an individual's life; that's what documentaries are for. :)
@Ganychan2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! That's why I wasn't crazy about the Freddie Mercury one, even though it's not a bad movie. It just follows the same path than a lot of other biopics: talented beginnings, struggle, things are working out, some kind of dark night of the soul, and then a hopeful sad or happy ending. Life doesn't feel that way.
@curiousworld79122 жыл бұрын
@@Ganychan Musicians seem to be a tough one for biopics. Their lives may, or may not, be all that interesting, so these films simply become 'fan service'. There's nothing wrong with that, but they do get to feeling very generic.

What really irks me though is when they overplay the subject's role as a hero and ignore the people beside him/her. A major example of a film guilty of this is Patton. While it DOES give Montgomery and the British some credit, it completely leaves out one of the greatest commanders for the US in World War II: Matthew Ridgway. In both the Italian Campaign AND the Battle of the Bulge, Ridgway led the airborne divisions and was credited as being vital to the success of the Allies in each. However, he gets ZERO credit in the film, Patton gets virtually ALL of the glory. Even more insulting is that Ridgway doesn't even appear in the film, never mind he and Patton met personally on occasion over the course of the war. The result of that film is that everyone thinks Patton alone was often the man of the hour, when really he should only get 50% credit. Ridgway meanwhile has been nearly forgotten to history, his name is almost NOWHERE in the public discourse and his accomplishments equally ignored. So upsetting as a history buff.

I suppose if the definition of "biopic" includes any film in which the main characters are versions of real people, then Amadeus counts. Both Salieri and Mozart were deliberately exaggerated by the author, not to make a retelling of history more engaging, but so that he could use them to tell a story about the destructive force of jealousy. The title is ironic; the main character is Salieri, but he is upstaged by the man whom he believed God had blessed more than him.

Some videos ideas for this format: comedies, foreign films, or blockbuster. Blockbuster would be a good 1 since u can tell the history of the event film and what makes it.
