This tutorial is for R19 workflow only, since R20+ don't support LWO formats. You can also try other export formats like FBX & OBJ

Hi MoGrapher, thank you very much - very, very great tutorial!!! I just have the problem (or challenge :-)) to import a CAD file in C4D to define materials and render (possibly also animate). I also use MoI3d and C4D version R21. I noticed that in R21 there is no import of lwo files anymore. I do the same settings and workflow as you, but with .obj - works like in your tutorial! After that just always used to make a UVMapping to then import it into Substance Painter and design the materials. But how do you do that with such a CAD file? I mean, you have an incredible amount of n-gons.... a clean working in Substance Painter is definitely not possible. Is that when you need to do a retopoly? As long as you stay in C4D with your render program (ex. Octane, Redshift, ...) this is all no problem. But as soon as you need complex materials (maybe with scratches on the edges, stickers, ...) it gets really complex. What is your way or your recommendation? Thank you very much! Again, great tutorial - helped me a lot!!! LG Robert

This is cool, but the models are still of boolean operations resulting in numerous connected ngons. The result is not quad dominant SubD capable geometry, even if it appears as such on initial inspection. Sure, most of the polygons are rectangular, but there is a complete lack of edge continuity other than to attach holes and extrusions to sides of larger polygons in order to make valid geometry. Many, many ngons remain.

what I see this is as a way to quickly bring a model into c4d for render rather than perfectly quad meshes. Waiting for some AI to work this out for us as its just manual labour otherwise

hey ...thank you for your video and the great tips. for exporting cad models ...do you think mi has the best mesh output ? i am working with fusion 360 and the stl files are pretty bad and there is not really a mesh output function ....thank you .best c

Hey Morapher, thanks so much for the tut! Just wondering, does this workflow give you better results than the C4D CAD importer?
@the_mographer
@the_mographer 4 жыл бұрын
Rygorius thank you and great question. Yes, much better results. With this workflow you can really export parts with a desired polycount / settings and preview your settings before generating polys. This way you know for sure what you are going to get in c4d. And the “avoid smaller then” function is a great way to optimize the objects so there is no unwanted heavy data to slow down your process.

If you have a very complex CAD file, using MOI can be an issue because it will not retain the instancing of the original file, whereas Cinema's native CAD importers will. So for example if you have a file with thousands of screws, MOI will mesh every last one, but C4D can import them all as instances (assuming they were set up like that in the CAD file). You get a messy looking triangulated bunch of objects if you view in wireframe, but normal GL view is file and so long as you don't delete the normals tag it will render fine too. For a simple object like the one here though, MOI is the way to go.

rojharris you are right. In that case i tend to use a combination of the best of both worlds.

Hey Mographer. nette tutorial!

I use Rhino to convert. Does it make sense to divide the areas into squares?
@the_mographer
@the_mographer 4 жыл бұрын
Rhino works as least as good as Moi, Same settings to tweak i think. (maybe even more) I'm not shure what you mean by divide areas? The i only want to divide everything that has a rounding to it.

Or do you mean, generating Quads? (Ngon Quads) You can always triangulate the Ngons if you want.
@rojharris
@rojharris 4 жыл бұрын
Rhino can't create quads like MOI can. Quads are much cleaner and lighter and only MOI can export them this well. I've been using it for years to do this and have never found anything better
