Cinema 4D: Rigging with the Character Object

Hey guys, this is just a quick look at the character object, I might zip past it a little but it's more of a quick overview for people considering it over manual rigging. Also this was recorded in Cinema 4D r21 which is now quite out of date, particularly since the major reworks of r25. It might still be relevant to some people so I'll leave it up for now. I may come back and do another character object rigging tutorial in the future so keep your eyes peeled for that. Happy rigging!

I tried to follow this tutorial verbatim but whenever i select the character rig nothing actually pops up, no blue character reveals itself only rig arrows. Would greatly appreciate any feedback on if i have faulted settingsl

i have a character that has multiple parts .. head / helmet / boots / legs / arms -- how can i rig with the character object .. ALL the tutorials including this one just use one gumby object mesh... you said its no trouble to have multiple parts but I'm really not seeing how you would bind the multiple parts, when i bind the multiple parts the whole thing moves together .. nothing is "rigged"

In his video, If you go and drop all your separate parts for the body under the binding tab, that should be all that you need to do. if thats not working, its a bit messier but you could select all of your parts, then right click in the outliner, and select "connect objects and delete" that will merge all of your parts. then try this same workflow for the Character Object. personally never had any trouble with Character Object.. but know it can be a bit finnicky in certain areas. hoping you were able to find a solution to your issue!

Did you ever fix your problem? I'm having a total nightmare rigging my model too! My model is more complicated than this as well with clothes etc.

Hey! sorry I only just saw your comment, its a shame you didn't manage to get it to work. You can definitely do this with the character object but the key is getting the weighting right. Like Mike Short mentioned you drop all your objects one by one under the binding tab. This will do an 'auto weighting' on all your objects. This should get you most of the way there but to get the objects to work in unison you'll need to weight the objects very cleanly so their movements are affected by the joints to the same amounts so they all move together correctly. There's a weighting section on in my character rigging class on skillshare but if you do any tutorials on character rig weighting you should get the idea. Good luck for next time, also nothing wrong with rigging manually!

sorry i think this is probably quite outdated now. I might have another crack at a character object tutorial at some point with the new version and with a bit more detail for people, rigging is tough, even tougher to teach it seems!

Yes! in the planning stage.. AE for beginners is up next, then will fully focus on an animation one, I want to do it justice

thank you man it was a quick Tutorial but I disliked it because you explain whole thing that fast that I didn't get the whole point. from the stuffs you showed at the beginning of the video I understood that you are a professional and I loved your works. but what I saw from other youtubers even if they want to say that they have a whole course about a topic at least they release a whole episode here ( in KZbin) or they just simply don't do a video like this. as I mentioned earlier I know you are professional and I liked your worked but you explains everything so fast that I should pause the video a lot of times and my rigged didn't worked.
