Both Blender and Cinema 4D 2023 are fantastic 3D software packages for 3d animation, but which one is the best for you? In this video, we'll compare the two software packages to see which is the best option for you.
Good news and bad news
good news, Autodesk Maya and 3ds max indie version is back at a low cost
bad news, cinema 4d has a new outrageous pricing system also making Zbrush a subscription-based software
super good news, Blender keeps giving all these software serious competition which I know has caused Autodesk to release a cheaper version of Maya and 3ds max. I hope Maxon also does the same.

In what way does a perpetual license holder need to get a subscription? 1. You CAN use your current perpetual license without ever upgrading to subscription. 2. You CAN upgrade your perpetual license for a fee going forward - also without subscribing. What that cost is remains to be seen since v2023 hasn't come out yet. 3. You CAN still buy perpetual licenses. That option is still available on their pricing page. This scenario is unlikely to change. MAXON might push subscriptions, but they'll still offer the perpetual option. They've been doing it this way with C4D for years. They just make the link a little less obvious. Also, integrating ZBrush functionality into C4D would not be easy since a lot of what ZBrush does is 2.5D; That 3D data gets mashed up into the pixol. The app does do some true 3D, but the reason why ZBrush is so fast is because there's a lot of representational trickery going on under the hood. Re-implementing ZRemesher was easier since that code operates from a different mindset than those pixol related features. It's also a situation of them translating what was being done, rather than how it was being done. Maxon would have to rewrite a fair bit of C4D to give their sculpting tools that ZB level performance. Knowing Maxon and having once been a user myself for a good decade, they're not going to do that. Also, there's ZERO reason for them to go to those lengths. Why integrate ZBrush when they can just continue to sell it as a different product and make more money? Double dip instead of trim the fat. That's gonna be their tactic. As far as which app is Cinema4D's competition... NONE OF THE ABOVE. Lemme tell you why. Again, I was a C4D user for nearly a decade. In the early days, they tried to go head to head with the other apps. With their R8 addition of character animation and rigging tools, it seemed clear that they wanted to take on Maya and 3dsmax. Unfortunately, they were never able to get a foothold in that market as the tools lacked a lot of basic functionality and there wasn't enough 3rd party support. They abandoned that VS Maya tactic pretty quickly. MAXON then tried to push their 3D paint functionality and corner the market there with the BodyPaint module. Unfortunately, as with today's version, it was just too crude to be practical. The paint and UV tools couldn't compete with then rivals DeepPaint3D and DeepUV. Artists were, at best, just using BodyPaint to fix texture seems and then doing the rest of their texturing in Photoshop. The arrival of Substance Painter was the nail in the coffin there. Ultimately, and this is where it stands today, their core user base is motion graphics artists. You could argue that they might be trying to take on Blender and Houdini here. However, Blender seems more intent on being the ultimate Swiss Army Knife, not concerning itself with one market. With Houdini, they're more concerned with effects in general and not motion graphics specifically. MAXON's C4D seems well entrenched in that arena and has for a good 12 years not. C4D's motion graphics tools are getting old, but it's still the de facto standard for that sort of work and what most studios and freelancers might default to. Lot more jobs available in this sector for C4D users than some of the other apps. I will say that, in the end, C4D is a failure because it's being mismanaged. Many parts of the app feel seriously outdated; Some haven't been updated/upgraded in 20 years and REALLY need to. The app, like any mature product, is long overdue for an overhaul. It's getting clunky with more and more stuff being added in. It needs massive streamlining. It's not nearly as clean as it once was, which was a big selling point for C4D in the early days. Same overall problem with Maya, btw. C4D's biggest failure... Price. Other apps keep getting cheaper or offering more low cost options for the indie sect. C4D just keeps getting more expensive both in the long and short term.

Personally I think C4D's development direction is good, it doesn't really need streamlining in my opinion (apart from viewport performance), but the progress is too slow. And as you said, the price is outrageous.

after almost growing up with 3ds max since it's version 5 (20 years ago) and switched to blender+UE5+Revit+TM, I found out it really doesn't matter for me as an architect and for freelancer stuff which software to use, as long as I have the procedure and workflow in my mind. it's like using different brands of wrenches to unscrew a screw. I'll use what software which is easier to approach (speed and price) and nearly get the same result. maybe for big studios it matters when they are trying to define a workflow using specific best compatible softwares but I think for majority of us (freelancers) it doesn't matter really. great vid and waiting for your next one man :)

I'm a Maya guy who's considering doing the jump to Blender. What's weird is how my concerns of flipping over to Blender have dramatically, and I mean dramatically, fallen over the last few years. Before I had a bucket of concerns, and now it's just a matter of UI and learning new shortcuts. I was thinking about this the other-day and came to a similar wrench/screw comparison. If I'm willing to learn an entire work-flow for one program, and if that work-flow in another program is similar but just a different interface, it really is just: "Well, I can unscrew this bolt with this wrench, but not with this one." Where as before it felt like: "Well this is almost like a wrench."

@@nickblomgren first of all don't be afraid to jump to blender. i used both 3ds max and blender parallel to overcome my fear of letting go (the truth is u're not letting it go, u r leaning on another wall) but now I mostly use blender and really ENJOY it. idk why but everything is on tip of ur fingers. for the work flow part yeah I know some programs have special features that can make them unique and make ppl use it for specially for that specific reason, but for what I do and mostly architects do never reaches to that VFX level. I LOVE OPEN SOURCE softwares because I'm sure right now blender devs are improving and making yet another update and that part keeps me motivated software-wise. in 1 year I saw tons of good updates and changes and it feels great man!

Pro tip: Stick with the software you use; each and every one of those can do the same thing if you know how to use it correctly. Switching constantly will just make you an amateur in all of them.

Blender will REALLY have to redo a lot of their systems, because blender can't handle the large amount of polygons Zbrush can, Zbrush could handle 150 million polys without issue on my pc, blender on the other hand struggles with a few million.
@kunemann
@kunemann Жыл бұрын
That’s because zbrush uses a different technique. It’s not real 3D, more like 2.5D. Nonetheless you are correct; zbrush handles more polygones. That’s what it’s made for!

Blender doesn't have to do any reprogramming. They can add the code for handling a lot of polygons for sculpting. But that would be like a new arm.

i can say same for zbrush too like it dont have raytracing, even unreal has it. every software is made in different way for different task. U guys should learn basics of any 3d workflow, u must be using downloaded assest with triangles mesh and subdivinging it then when it lags then blame on your software. poeple whom i used to work with did this and blamed on software. I know it is problem of knowledge for u guys, because on my last project i used tree model with 20k poligons and copied them on a plane around 5000 time it was fine for me ,only time it got stuck is when i did control+z and for scuplting it can easily handle millons of polygons if u know right way for going for it, like starting with low sub-D level with no triangles, and on high sub-D hiding part of model for optimizing viewport speed. and most of those youtube channel who teach tutorials dont even know word like retopology. so dont follow them blindly do some research and learn about the different softwares how they work, what difference they have and why.

I was a loyal C4D user for many many years, from v9 to v18 but after several years of lackluster updates and then going to subscription I pulled stakes and moved to Houdini. the learning curve was kinda steep but its nodes are killer. SideFX is working on the modeling tools. Houdini offer a free Apprentice version and its Indie version is $269 (USD) per year or two years for $399. I played with Blender, it is capable and improving but still has a way to go but being free is very attractive. C4D is an amazing software and does a lot of things really well, it UI is one of if not the best going. but being rentware Maxon knows it has its users over a barrel especially the one or two person shop who cannot afford the time it would take to learn a new software.

It seems like one of the biggest things people use to prop up blender is that it's free, but everything is free on the internet, you just have to know where to look. But, as other people have noted, if you understand the basic concepts of 3D artistry, you can use any program efficiently, just depends on which UI you like best.

Blender has improved drastically interms of Tools and Workflow. But i think the subscriptions is very reasonable price specially the Maxon One Package. Because the idea here is paying less for more softwares and keeping the users up-to-date with the latest tools made by the developers vs buying the perpetual license which will be obsolete in the future. :/ As of now i find the Maxon One Subscription the best bet IN comparison with other softwares. But in idea with the industry it will always depends on what workflow pipeline they will use on studios. Subscriptions i think is the future for companies specially that in this time of age pirated software's are freely available on the net. Maxon Employees needs to get paid also and their developers im sure aren't cheap. But i think blender has a bright future ahead specially that their tools are getting to be really solid.
