The thing is, it's hard for filmmakers to get their new ideas financed, atleast at it's core that's not part of a franchise movie. Look at The Irishman, we want that movie to be released in theaters but it ended up on Netflix because Netflix was the only one that financed the movie. It's a shame but it's better off that way than just nothing for Martin Scorsese

I kinda disagree, we can do without corporate theaters. I have a private home theater. It is so much better experience. It pisses me off that a company like Sony that makes incredible home cinema equipment decided to release it movies only in corporate theaters basically making people who buy their home systems either go out or wait months.

We need to bring back independent cinemas. They've all been taken by the hypercapitalist monopoly that feels no different than "classic" Hollywood's control over the entertainment industry. A lot of these directors like Cronenberg but even some bigger contemporaries got their start doing smaller, more insular and "trashier" films. Just look at Spielberg's first movie Duel for a good example there. But these guys (and ladies in some cases too) got successful through building and embracing a community. That's what we've lost in the 21st century, sadly. Not just in cinema but in society in general. We have no sense of community, of brotherhood and unconditional mutual support for one another as people. It's all been turned into competition and transaction for personal gain, both out of selfishness and out of the often too real fear that we will fall into precarity without a moment's notice. So I guess what I'm saying here is, if you want to see great filmmakers who aren't limited by corporate pressure, you've got to build these communities with your fellow humans and bond over your shared passions. Don't just make something on your own, make it together with the people you have a community with. Cronenberg certainly couldn't have done any of his masterpieces without help from all the people he's worked with over the years, the director's only ever one piece of a much larger puzzle. But definitely do it. Whether you have a decent budget saved up or you're making something in your garage or the middle of the woods with spare pieces, if you have integrity and a vision TOGETHER you can make it work. And build that community. If you're not a filmmaker but know some in your locality, consider getting an independent theater started, even if it's out of your own apartment or whatever. Everybody has to start somewhere. Don't be afraid of what people might think, fuck 'em. Work together, don't compete, instead share your art with one another. This is how creativity is fostered. Alright that's the end of this ramble, maybe somebody will find it helpful.
