There was no slavery within the UK since 1066. Nobody was allowed to own a slave within England and the courts freed slaves brought into the country by their owners. In contrast, Britain participated in the evil trade until it was abolished across the British Empire in 1834.

Films like this remind us of exactly why Americans consider their 'Right to Bear Arms' so important and are so reluctant to give them up. The Government can be your enemy.
@pdoylemi19 күн бұрын
There is a problem with that theory - the KKK also decided the government was their enemy. When we stop being ruled by the people and start being ruled by the people with the most weapons, no one can be free for long. Today we have radical white and/or Christian nationalists with lots of guns. Like the KKK they resent that their way of life, that puts them on top and does not consider others their equals would gladly oppress a liberal atheist veteran like me, or my gay friends, or my trans niece. They think our government is tyranny because they are not allowed to do that. They are required to treat people equally. They can hate whoever they want, but they cannot act on that, but they will if they can, and they will use guns to do it if they think they could win. Yes, this was a nice story about good people standing up for themselves - and being BEATEN by bad people with more guns and more power. Respect for the Constitution which has waned on the right, and the unfettered right to vote is our ONLY hope for freedom. Guns are not the answer.
@user-uh7yl5cy6b16 күн бұрын
The Govt is always your enemy! Be prepared!
@pdoylemi15 күн бұрын
Here is the problem with your idea. The KKK considered the government to be their enemy and used their guns to harm their fellow Americans, since they had lost the war that their kind started. In the 1920's and early 30's there were more members of the Socialist Party than the KKK and they considered the government their enemy, but they did not have a lot of guns, or else were not willing to use them. You want to replace rule by the people with rule by the most angry people with the most guns.This was a nice story of a case where people we sympathize with used force - but what happened in the end? After the war, they were eventually defeated by better armed more angry people. Democracy is our ONLY hope for peace and freedom - not guns.
@pdoylemi15 күн бұрын
@@user-uh7yl5cy6b You ARE "the government". A line in a movie can tell a grand idea in very few lines or one line, in the most memorable way. We term them cinematic history moments. Mathew got super inspired for this one movie. You could tell. The scene where he is taking the dead boy back to his mom for the burial, another empathetic guy steps in to comfort by saying 'he died brave and courageous', Mathew replies, in a very low disappointed tone, 'no will, he just died'. There is a big ideology emphasised in few words. Unless there is cause to die, do not die, Unless people cherish you and remember you every day of their life, do not offer to die. The worth of life is never passe, it does become in some circumstances.

You are wrong. Americans are being used by the wealthy. They funneled most of the good paying jobs, that every day Americans used to work in order to support their families and to have decent homes of their own, to a brutal totalitarian regime on the other side of the world. Just about everything that we and people of the rest of the world buy is now made in that brutal totalitarian regime that still has death camps for dissidents. They also still have forced abortion. China is the number one most polluted country in the world. It has no labor laws and zero environmental regulations and yet we hear nothing from the so called “environmentalists” or the corporate owned media about it! The majority of Americans just want to have decent jobs and the right to raise their families as they choose. That is why people came here from Europe to begin with. The elite royals and the rest of the aristocrats owned all the land and held all the wealth and on top of that they ran the churches. People came to North America so they could own their own land. So they could work and keep most of their wages. The most prestigious colleges and universities of the western world (Including American Ivy League schools) began to embrace and promote communism and Marxism during the early 20th century. Because those schools were run by the wealthy nothing was ever done about it. After WWII the elites of Europe decided to move the educational systems into socialism. That did not begin to happen in the U.S. until the far left Constitution hating judges that had come out of the communist/Marxist dominated Ivy League schools gained a majority in the highest courts in the land with the assistance of the Clinton’s favorite president (Roosevelt). That is when the takeover from within really began. They then started the globalization scam which funneled millions of good paying jobs to communist China and other countries with no labor laws and zero environmental regulations. Slave wages workers make industrialists wealthy. The globalization scam decimated the small businesses of the western world that had once been the source of income for millions of Americans. It decimated the middle class that up to that point had been growing. The corporate overlords bought up the defunct businesses that they wanted. Now we have five major multinational corporations that own most of our economy. We are living in an oligarchy. The wealthy rule over us. They have taken over the elections because their media corporations that lie to everyone just are not being listened to by everyone anymore. After the supremely far left court decisions of the 60s the doors of the rest of the educational system were opened to the academics of the communist/Marxist dominated Ivy League schools. They dumbed down almost all of the American educational system except for the few private schools that have resisted them. These people do not want another “greatest generation” to fight against them. If the U.S. government does fall it will not be the people who get back the power. All is set for the USA to be a totalitarian run country and that regime will destroy the majority of the population just as communist China has murdered millions of their own people.

In Australia the rich and wealthy have a very Liberal, system that uses an invisible violence to make their world work for them. A structured violence you might say. Most of the Civil War documentaries or movies that I have seen are very careful to make the South look very valiant and made the North look brutal once Sherman got into the South. Of course the North had been losing the war for years thanks to the cowardice of Lincoln’s generals. Once they did start to win they had to make sure the South did not regroup as they planned. Sad to say that they are mostly correct about the politics of the war in this movie. Most of the Southern soldiers (who were very brave fighters) had very little money and owned no slaves. Many were sharecroppers. They were conned into fighting by the lies of the wealthy plantation owners. Money is a dangerous drug to some.

Drôle de stratégie de combat en tout début du film. On avance tranquilement au pas cadencé vers les balles ennemis sans chercher à les éviter. C'était çà la guerre à l'époque ? Une véritable boucheriee oui.

Napoleonic tactics persisted all the way up to WW1. The butchery that ensued during this war a full generation before was abysmal. Now imagine these same tactics being employed in the killing fields of the early stages of the "great" war. When bolt action rifles where the rule of the day. Along with machineguns as well. Utter madness

I find it amazing that men could be trained to form themselves into a lines and walk straight into a volley of gunfire coming from an opposing line of men. You would think somebody at some point would've came up with a better tactics, of course the weapons that were available certainly played a part in that tactic.

This was an excellent movie, one of the best that McConaughey played in. I wish I could’ve read all the writing in this movie, but I don’t know what language it was. I can’t believe the laws that they have or had in the states, that they could take amend to court because he has an eighth Negro blood and therefore has to have his marriage and all that unbelievable. In Canada, you have to prove what your status would be if you wanted to claim being native.
