Thomas Kenny From an adaptation standpoint I might agree with you, as the HTTYD movies have even less in common with their source material than either the Percy Jackson or Eragon movies (which is a monumental feat in and of itself). However, HTTYD is at least a solid movie, while the others are absolute garbage.

The movie just failed at everything an adaptation is. To say that it was inspired by the books is blasphemy. I mean, none of us hate when there are adjustments being made to make books into movies. When I was in boarding school, my good friend entered a Montana writing competition and won a dinner date with Christopher Paolini. After politely chatting about both their circumstances for a few minutes, my friend could not help but ask Paolini for his thoughts on the movie adaptation. Long story short, Paolini despised the film as much as any other sane fan of the series. I specifically remember he claimed Paolini was most disappointed with the Urgals being portrayed as juggalos minus the clown makeup. ((Bonus fun fact my friend learned on the dinner date: Paolini straight up eats plain butter as an appetizer. To heavily paraphrase the Paolini's stance on the expectation of eating your butter on bread (it's been a few years), "Early in my adolescence, I had it figured out that bread was nothing more than a vessel for butter, an unnecessary component, and I've never looked back".))

But honestly, how does someone manage to fuck up the adaptation this badly. HAVE. FEATHERS.

I KNOW! Other things that killed me: The urgals are just big dudes, no horns. The Raz'ak are killed here in the first movie one of the many ways they killed sequel potential. And if I remember rightly, Eragon also never recieved his scar.

I agree. For starters Brom's Death YES it was similar but how it was in the book escaping to the desert with his body and in his dying breath reveals he was A ridder and his Dragon was named Siphira.Second Dragon did not meet Murtagh in the prison he met him after saving him from the ra'zac when they snuck up on them and knocked them out. And Garrow's death which was a emotionally driven factor in Eragon did not happen in the same was. What happened was that he was burned by a very corrosive acid and found in the rubble of his farm, and the only home he knew of. Brom's character was also not really the same and didn't make you feel as much for his death. when he died in the book I almost cried. When he died in the movie I laughed. Explaining how sapphire's egg ending up in the wood's didn't leave the mistory of why was it there. And left Ayra to be a character people try to figure out fully. and syphira's growth rate was waaaay to fast it took about a fortnight(2 weeks. NOT THE VIDEO GAME.) for her to be a decent growth size. not big enough to ride but not small enough to not be able to fly. AND ERAGON WAS NOT BREAKING HIS RIBS EVER 100 PAGES. my favorite part.also remember the shade you know the red head guy yeah. HE WAS NOT DEAD HE WAS IN A ANOTHER BATTLE WITH ERAGON AT THE END. I could literally point out so many things here that I hated that I could write a book that's story lasted for 497 pages of enjoyable content. and then make a good movie out of those 497 pages.(I need a girlfriend)

If only people would spend as much money on my "Impact" a James Grider novel on Amazon or "Dance of Death" the sequel on Etsy as they have spent on these Eragon books which are supposed to literally be a copy of Star Wars. Fifteen year old James Grider fights against society for a right to be molesturbated by a 26 year old woman, for example. That's a good plot. Better than beating some evil Darth Vader type lord in a castle. Where are the books about destroying Freemasonry in America?

there are reasons behind some of the things that appear coincidental or illogical. The reason the stone appeared in front of eragon is becasue another group of beings hijacked and influences arya's magic. Durza didn't summon fire where she was standing becasue he had to get the stone/egg from her and couldn't risk anything happening to it. The eggs are enchanted to only hatch when the one destined to ride them touch them. Otherwise an egg can be ready to hatch and stay in stasis for ages. Saphira was in a stasis in her egg for a little over 100 years. Therefore convenient timing is not quite so convenient, considering the Varden(rebels) have been trying to find someone the egg will hatch for for 20 years and Galbatorix for 80 years before that, also it then couldn't have hatched for Roran, Sloan, or anyone else. Brom has the ability to speak to people telepathically, the way Eragon and Saphira can so yes Eragon could hear him. Eragon gets direction from Arya through a vision becasue she's supposed to be in a self induced coma to slw the poison.

I cant describe in words how sad this movie makes me. I have a deep love for the inheritance cycle, it inspired me to start writing D&D quests for my friends, started my love for fantasy, and is one of my favorite fantasy stories of all time. And it hurts to see all the mistakes that they made (I still cant believe how one dimensional and boring Galbatorix is in this film. one of the elements that made him intimidating in the books was that he didn't say a single word until very late in the series, despite being its big bad. The only details available about him where whispered and fearful up until that point). I know that my enjoyment of the series is not a metric that gives it worth, nor is my sentimentality. But if this movie had actually been good, It might have become an amazing cinematic experience. I'm going to end this by being that guy, the books are almost always better, and they certainly are in this case.

The books were a LOT darker than the movie, examples: Final battle in the first book (Eragon) involves Eragon fighting in a Dwarf city (if memory serves), being betrayed by Magicians/Sorcerers (was not protected by them at all in the battle, and therefore could have instantly died; the stuff that happened immediately following was by their willingness to betray him), so when he beats the evil sorcerer, he ends up with a debilitating scar that cripples him. The next book begins, he ends up heading to the elves, where they're kinda racist and demeaning towards him (Elves having much faster speed, strength, and are typically more skilled than their human counterparts; taunting and jeering a literally crippled Eragon). He ends up becoming a half-elf by some weird dragon ritual that he accidentally partakes in. Finally learns Magic, and goes through the paces of properly using it. Eventually realizes the ability to harness it offensively, and as well how to draw on the energy of others (literally, like killing plants, animals, etc. for their life force). Proceeds to become very efficient at utilizing the magic in battle, overwhelming enemy Magic-users, which are protecting troops, and upon conquering their minds / killing them, proceeds to snap arteries/blood vessels in all the soldiers in that entire grouping (hundreds to thousands), instantly killing them. Gains even more power, and learns ways of acquiring more, literally taking the Souls / Consciousness of Dragons that are imbued in little stones, and utilizing those as a power resource (the bad guy uses those in addition to his own resources, to make himself almost unkillable, and puts up a ridiculous amount of wards against harm). He beats the bad guy, by circumventing his wards, using wordless magic to innocuously have him 'experience the suffering that he had caused to others', leading to his undoing. There was more, but we're talking about books I read about a decade ago.

@@carolynpitts2163 its actually mentioned in the first book how hard it is to do magic with just one word for example: you want to pick up a stone off of the ground you need to first know what to say in the ancient language, the easiest way to do this would be to say "pick up this stone" but depending on your knowledge of the natural world and how good you are at magic you could just say "stone" and pick it up that way. a true master can say something vague like "water" and end up with something totally unrelated like a gemstone. but the more of the ancient language that you know the more easily you can do specific tasks. Zenyx So, teasing Shurtagh at the end when everyone already has seen the ending to Brisingr means this movie sucks? Having Liam Neeson, the best choice for the role of Brom, means this movie sucks? Having everything being thrown to people who already know the story, meaning keeping a secret like Brom being a dragon rider (that was hidden for like, the entire fucking series. That is not effective story telling for when you make movies you know the fans will watch and no doubt spoil for everyone who doesn't know) or Galbatorix's dragon still being alive would ruin the story even more. And people say movies suck. People say they would make it better, when in reality I would rather have no movie than have some guy who thinks they can do better than a cast who look the closest to the characters (SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO MAKE SACRIFICES! THAT'S HOW LIFE FUCKING GOES YOU NUMBSKULLS!). This is kind of why I don't want a Spyro movie, because that will be yet another good movie that is hated on. The worst part is, the Eragon books are very "cinematic" books. In many instances while reading them I found myself picturing scenes very clearly in my mind because a lot of the time, the descriptions feel straight up like the author is writing down what he’s watching on a screen. That makes a movie all the easier to make out of it. In some scenes the staging is just given. I don’t know how they even managed to make a mess out of it. The series is rather slow-paced and very fitting for cinema adaptation. I hope Disney does something acceptable with their show.
